View Full Version : When You Hear Music, Do You Choreograph It In Your Head?

[color=darkblue:550b3235bb]I have always loved music. When I first got a Walkman, my life became a musical! I would lip-synch to whatever I was listening to, even sing out loud if I was in a remote place.

Music has a new meaning since skating has become a favourite part of my life. I see music as skating programs. I think about who could skate well to the piece of music I'm listening to. I think about where the jumps would be, and where a great footwork sequence would go.

So who else here is a closet choreographer? I'd love to hear whatever thoughts go through your mind as you're hearing music.[/color:550b3235bb]

I do it! I have it all written down what i would do. Specifically to the song "Por Una Cabeza" for Sasha Cohen. I even EDITED it! you can hear it here http://www.azurepixel.com/misc/the%20tango2.mp3 If you want to know what I'd have her do, just let me know.

I have since I was five years old. When we went to the symphony I was a little young so I spent the time seeing dances in my head. I used to go to my sister's "Nutcracker" rehearsals so I usually saw something of the kind.

I'm not sure if I always have... I started skating at 3 and quit around 11-13 - at that time I just wasn't into music. However, in the years afterwards when I started taking different sports and dance classes, I've obsessively gotten into music of all varieties. And with that has come the choreographing to most everything I hear, lol. I was even doing it as I opened this topic... (to Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah, in case you wondered... :P )

For me, I not only do it in my head, but I can also feel it in my body... if I'm alone, I get into it with arm movements and little twitches for stroking... I can feel myself skating to the music.

Same thing goes for Irish dance music... either I'm really doing steps, or twitching them to the music, lol.

I do it all the time. A lot of the time it isn't intentional; I just picture things in my head. Until I got into watching skating like I do now I'd picture dance. I feel it in my body too and I like when people aren't around then I can dance what I feel.

By the way danibellerika, nice music!

Me too. Most times, i only do this when i think it would be a great piece for a pairs routine, b/c that is my fave discipline to watch.

Sometimes, i hear certain pieces of music and it speaks to me in ways that makes me think, only a man could ever skate to this piece of music properly.

Also, i find that i only do this when i hear music that i have never seen it being skated to. I guess that also shows that i am sick of watching skaters use the same pieces over and over again.

I can see it quite a bit. I hear a piece of music and then think, wow, I can see so and so skating to this and doing this jump here and this move here. etc. Nice to know I am not the only one

We're such a gifted bunch. The choreographers of tomorrow. Look out Bezic and Nichols!!!

Janet, I have been a little dormant on the boards, but I seem to be making a comeback in a big way! So what ever happened to the dinner out with all the Sandhu fans??

Hey Peter- I dunno, I guess no one got around to organizing it. Deane seemed to drop out of the scene after Emanuel had a meltdown, and the only one I've really kept in touch with is Rainey. The most active people on the list seem to be from outside Vancouver ( Not that the list is very active!. I too have not been active at all on the boards. I didn't even notice when live chat disappeared from all the sites (and I used to chat every night).

Yup, me too but I don't think there is a skater alive or dead who could skate the programs I see in my head!! No resting, moves that are not mechanically sound but then what did Elvis say about the axel? lol Sure wish I could skate!!

Oh my goodness, yes I do.
It's like la la land for skating.
Calms my nerves. All I have to do is turn on a classical music station
(or my list of my favorites), and there I go off into La la Land.
Since I'm not too good at skating right now, it feels good to imagine I'm doing as well as the pros.

You Bet! :D I love music and dancing and when I hear a song like "Bad To The Bone" I think of Elvis Stojko skating to it! However, when I hear Donna Summer I think of myself dancing to it! :P

It depends on what I am thinking or doing if I think of an ice-skater skating to a certain song. Right now I am watching Dave Matthews singing on StoryTellers on VHI and I actually think of myself skating to his music. And boy, am I a great ice-skater thinking about it!

I do too. In fact, I even have about 4 or 5 songs/pieces that I WILL skate to one day (want to wait till I can use it the way I want to though - i.e. I want some doubles and great spins! lol). But because of this, and with choreographing to them in my head, I've even decided on what some of the choreography is! Like for one of them, I know what I will do for the first section, and for another, I listen to it and it's the same, I know exactly what I want some of the choreography to be and "I've SO gotta do a scratch spin on that bit". I also try to think of appropriate starting/finishing positions.

Huh, like I could! But hey! I usually can pick a skater that could skate to a particular song that I hear. You know like give the song real meaning on the ice.

I am always listening to music and then trying to place the music (or match it up) with a kater or a pair team. I usually do not think about music for ice dance.

All the time especially when I started playing the piano/singing. Later when I started skating I'd choreagraph my own pieces... except I think they're technically too difficult fo me to ever pull off!

I definitely do! Given music inspires me so much, I always think "geez, a triple jump would look marvelous just there in the song", or "that's a sequence for a spread eagle".

I thought I was so darn neurotic, but now I see that I am a pretty average skating fan!:D

I do it often, especially if I'm listening to classical or instrumental music.

In fact, I had a whole program choreographed to Josh Groban's "Gira Con Me" on paper, lol. :)

:D :D :D :D :D I've picked music and "choreographed" numbers for many skaters (Kurt Browning and Elvis, among others) but, alas, only in my imagination.....

I do this too, but mostly for pairs. I'll say to my sister "Did you hear that throw/lift/death spiral?"

I have an old tape of Elvis skating to "little bells" or something like that and I heard a piece of music "Rememberance" or "Silver Screen Romance", I can't remember which, from "Sunday Morning Coffee" CD. I muted the tape, put on the CD and let 'er rip. It fit his choeorgraphy exactly. But either cut would have been beautiful for pairs.

Yes, I do it too... usually working on something for Michelle while I'm driving...
what a hoot! I often experiment with placing the spiral in places where the music is counter to the flow of the spiral just to imagine the effect... and I, like the rest of you, am simply waiting to be discovered! ;)
