... I'll never watch another channel or sleep again! I guarantee I will tape every single "how to skate" segment.

Wow, the American Idol spinoff seems interesting. I hope it comes to my cable provider.

Quite honestly the idea of the Ice Channel scares the heck out of me. I can just see my obsessive self with 125,000 video tapes around me trying to tape every single thing 24 hours a day. Just the regular skating stuff adds up already! Yikes!
But of course I am calling my cable provider to ask them to carry it. ;)

Aww.. on the first preview schedule that came out, I seem to remember there being old competitions being aired. I don't see that on the new one, or am I just missing something? I would hope they still include that!

I'm as obsessive as you.
Does anyone here ever watch ESPN Classic Figure Skating on the weekend?
I just got digital about a month ago and have become hooked on this. It's on every Sunday (and repeated later) at 6:00 pm, west coast time. Yesterday was a replay of the 1993 World Pros competition. Wow, Boitano, Orser, Petrenko, Wylie, Yamaguchi, Sumners, Biellman etc. And, of course, the class of all disciplines, Gordeeva & Grinkov. What a gorgeous couple. After that, a mini-documentary on Katt Witt.
I think an Ice Channel would be terrific.

What time on Sundays do they show Figure Skating on ESPN Classic? (Eastern Time) I have digital as well, but assumed they only catered to the football/basketball/baseball crowd, aside from the flurry of documentaries right before SLC.

karina1974, I think ESPN Classic in the States and ESPN Classic Canada are two completely different stations. The last time I remember the U.S version of ESPN Classic showed skating was when they broadcast some old World Pros competitions a few years ago.
BTW, if it's any consolation, I live in Canada and I can't get ESPN Classic Canada, either...and I'm not sure Canadians will be able to get this new Ice Channel, either (although I certainly hope I'm wrong!)

Oh man, I'm never going to leave my house! Imagine, being able to record the great competitors of the past, stuff you only get to see as pictures in skating books.... My tape collection only goes back to 1994 Olympics, minus 1994 World's & 1995 World's Exhibitions, so this channel will be a must for me. Those early 1980's comps they showed on the sample schedule will be interesting to watch. I hope they dip even further back into the archives than that!
I also think it will be good for people to be able to see what the "skating is more than just jumps" crowd has been trying to get across to the "quad-triple" crowd, b/c now they will be able to see it for themselves.
My question is, will this be offered standard with digital, as is ESPN Classic, for example, or will we have to request it special and pay extra, like the premium channels? I already pay $51/month for TW Digital as it is.

I agree! I want Janet Lynn too! And Tai and Randy! And Linda vs. Annette. I hope they have access to all the ABC broadcasts, which I think go back to '62! I have seen little to nothing from '62-'68, and I didn't have access to a VCR until '83. So, I'd particularly like to see and tape anything from the beginning of skating on TV to '84.

Yes, I agree. I think it would be good for newer fans to see skating from the figures era. Basic skills were overall better back then, though I don't recall seeing any hyperextended spirals. Also, I don't remember as many outrageous dance costumes.

I was wondering the same thing. We have DirecTV. We get most many sports channels that are part of the regular $39 package, but some, like Golf Channel, are extra.

Ok, does anyone else wonder how they're going to fill all this time? Daily news from the USFSA? I'm sorry -- but there is not enough content here. And not enough subscriber base / interested people.
That said, I will have to quit everything I do and sit in front of the TV, watching only the IceChannel! Yay.

I deliberately didn't get digital cable because I knew if I had Animal Planet http://www.veggie.info/YaBBImages/smilies/other_lion.gif I wouldn't do anything but watch TV all day ... The Ice Channel would be even worse! http://www.veggie.info/YaBBImages/smiley.gif

Hey it's not bad for the beginning.. sure it will seem thin for now.. who's to say that with consumer feedback they might not actually pick up more ideas and maybe produce their own stuff.. maybe even provide an outlet to promote competitions!! Hey.. I know I'd be interested in having our Nationals in there  :halo:

I will NEVER leave the house. NEVER. LEAVE. THE. HOUSE! Hahahaha, just my luck though, my cable provider probably wont have it. Blah to them.

The Ice Channel also has a logo now. I tried to upload it here, but couldn't figure out how (I'm a technical dolt). Anyhow, for those of you who would like to use it on your sites (hopefully linking to the Ice Channel site), it's on Rudy Galindo's home page (and a few others as well):

Feel free to download it. You may have to resize it. The size of the image there is 128 x 57 pixels.

I am also afraid that they would not have enough content to fill 24 hours with figure skating. When the concept first developed, I thought perhaps a "skating channel" would include speed skating, short track, curling events, and ice hockey as well as figure skating. You know, anything that has to do with skates and/or ice.

If it was all those other sports I doubt they would show figuring 2% of the time with hockey being on 98% of the time. I still have my doubts about this channel and hopefully it does happen. I don't really get how a mock up schedule is suppose to make us believe that it is going to really happen.

Oh, I'm sure they could fill the time with some interesting programs.
How about a weekly talk show with Speedy? It could even be a game show to see if anyone can get a clear explanation from him about anything-- the new judging system, why judges who cheat are allowed to continue judging, etc.
How about a Tonya Harding show (kind of like the Anna Nicole Show)?
How about a skating celebrity boxing, where skaters get to go a few rounds with one of the judges? (Jamie Sale vs. the French judge).
How about a skating judge survivor show where judges from different federations are stranded together on an island and have to compete against each other and make alliances to win? They could start out as two tribes-- Eastern European vs. the rest of the world. They would vote a judge off each week, and the winner gets to judge at the Olympics. And the host? Speedy, of course!
The possibilities are endless!

LOL Serenity! I love your ideas - They could do a "Bachelor" type show with pairs skaters or ice dancers who are looking for new partners. One Russian male ice dancer, 25 ladies in need of a partner - who will he choose?
Or, a Real World rip off - 7 skaters, picked to live in a house... see what happens when they stop being polite and start getting real!
Skate Dates - skating fans go on blind dates with ISU officials.
Christine Brennan must have her own show - Jerry Springer style!

We will have to start a sport group for skating addicts anonymous - for those of us who haven't left their homes in months because of the skating channel!
