I spent time at Skate Canada with friend that has driven the zamboni and was telling me about its operations. There are electric zambonis these days available too...

The Northbrook Sports Center, which hosted the 2002 Midwestern Sectional Championships, uses electric power for their zambonis. The zamboni's are hooked up to an electric line that is suspended on a track with little "rollers" above the ice surface. As the zamboni moves around the rink the line either withdraws or extends. I'd never seen this set-up before, but it looked pretty nice. Of course money isn't always available for such things.
