Last years show will be broad casted tonight between 8-10.

Just in case it already wasn't posted thought I'd post.

This will be last year's Canadian Stars On Ice show that will be broadcast tonight here in Canada on the CBC. Just to clear up some confusion.

Thanks Tigger - just really happy to see this show. I wasn't able to see SOI LIVE last year. Infact I haven't been to a SOI show since 1999 - so I'll be making up for lost time this year.

It was my first time seeing a few of these programs so I'll post my comments on those:

Meno/Sand (The first time I ever saw your face) - Wow. A nice big throw 2axel and some really unique lifts (for them). This song always makes me tear up and they did a great job with it.

Bourne/Kraatz (Sadeness) - Being a choreographer I always watch ice dance with a particularly critical eye. Even more so as one of the pieces that I performed in my last show was a piece called "Accidents Happen"... set to the music "Sadeness". ;) However, I felt this was one of their finest works to date and sincerely enjoyed watching yet another skater/team interpreting this piece with aplomb - although to me when I think Sadeness and skating, I'll always think Hartshorn/Sweiding.

Kurt Browning (Guitar) - There were some really great moments in this routine and I liked the casual approach and huge entries, although I would hardly call this one of his successes. The choreography seemed laboured, the opening was a little rough around the edges and the costume wasn't flattering.

Brasseur/Eisler (Never Tear Us Apart) - Some very interesting lifts, and loved the huge lateral twist. I always enjoy watching these two skate, and think that this is a really good program for them and I loved the ending. The music did kind of drag a bit, and I think a medley of this and perhaps another INXS song might have worked a little better.

***

And like every year for the past 5 or 6, I will again express my disgust with Sandra Bezic. The group work (tango and Moulin Rouge ladies can can) was extremely amateurish considering the natural talent of many skaters in this cast, and the fact she commentates her own choreography is unprofessional and pretentious. While I think SOI is a fabulous cast on every tour, I'll be the first to say I think it's time for a change of Artistic Directors, and from what I've heard about the new Ozzy Osbourne opening number, I think it should be sooner rather than a medley of favourites from The Bachelor and Temptation Island's soundtracks next year.

That wasn't Ewin McGregor's version of Your Song from Moulin Rouge, was it?? They must have had difficulty clearing the rights to the music for Moulin Rouge - a huge disappointment considering I thought the music last year was the best thing about the show. And Kurt's Elevation with no lyrics - yuck!! Overall, a disappointing broadcast. Considering the extra 1/2 hour, we got to see Meno and Sand and Lucinda Ruh (who likely would have been chacked last year), but not much else. Did enjoy the little interviews with the skaters, that was fun.

Bailey, I never noticed Todd's "Your Song" sounded any different than the "original" version last night, but you could be right. I know almost every CBC SOI broadcast includes at least one or two performances with "dubbed" versions of the original music, but this year, there seemed to be more than ever: I know CBC used dubbed versions of Lady Marmalade (not that I liked the original much better, in that case!) and Kurt's Elevation number. I also suspect at least a couple of the songs from the Carpenters finale were dubbed versions, too!

CBC having difficulty getting the Moulin Rouge music rights could also explain why we got to see the ladies' can-can number, but not the men in their feather boas (which I would have much rather seen than Lady Marmalade!) Or maybe they just thought one "Lloyd Eisler in drag" number was enough! ;) I was happy they were able to include Kurt, Alexei and Brian's tango number, though! And I think this was the first time CBC actually included one of M&S' solos in their SOI broadcast.

Overall, I enjoyed last night's broadcast (except for all the dubbed music and not getting to see the guys' can-can number) and I hope the two-hour timeslot will be here to stay! :)
