View Full Version : Has a skater ever made you cry?

I've only cried once watching skating. Elvis Stoiko at 2001 Skate Canada. I don't why, but all of a sudden I started bawling. I'm sad to see him go. :( I hope he has a g8 pro career!

I found Irina Slutskaya's short program "Serenade" so beautiful that I found myself crying while watching it during two separate competitions.
I'm a pianist, so I have a special affiliation for the music--but the combination of the music and the skating was so lovely.
I once crried while watching Alexei Urmanov skate to "Princess of the Circus"--but those were the only times I've cried watching skating.

oh I love Irina's Serenade too! I think it is beautiful and a very well choreographed program. It was just lovely.

Only two, really - Katia during the Sergei tribute, and frequently Michelle makes me cry - such as her Winter, East of Eden, Dantes Prayer, and Fields of Gold programs.

Often I am moved to tears by the skaters' reactions, both positive and negative, after a particularly strong skate. But as for skaters whose programs make me cry, only the top two.

Strangely, my favorite skater, Paul Wylie, rarely moved me to tears as he did his other fans. I was sentimental every time he skated to Go The Distance since it was his swan song, but otherwise I was too busy marveling at his excellence than moved to tears.

From recent memory...

Sarah's "You'll Never Walk Alone"
Memorial Show (live)/2002 Olympic Gala (TV)

Jamie/David's "Love Story"
Numerous times including 2002 Olympics FS (TV)

Michelle's "This Time Around"
2001 US Nationals Exhibition (TV)

I'd have to say Sarah's means the most, since its a 9/11 tribute - I saw the light beams again today on the way home from work.

Gosh, too many times to list--but then I have been aroung too long--Janet Lynn, John Curry, etc., etc., etc.

Perhaps the most recent "surprise" performance that broought me to tears was Rudy Galindo at Nationals in San Jose. That was awesome.

I have been brought to tears by a number of performances since then.

I can almost guarantee I'll get all teary for at least ONE skater's performance with every skating comp or show I watch -- geez, I'm a marshmallow!

IIRC, Michelle didn't debut the Linda Eder song, "This Time Around" until COI 2001. A lot of Michelle's programs have made me cry, but not "TTA". It's one of those show tune, belt numbers that makes me want to belt and get up and dance a kick line. :D

Michelle Kwan has programs that will make me cry at the drop of a hat. I have also cried watching Katia Gordeeva when she had the tribute show for Sergei.

Adrian I got a great and beautiful picture of the lights that represent the WTC. It is one email that I am hanging onto :)

I think I cried all the way through the Sergei tribute, but especially when Katia skated and also when Victor skated to "Love a Woman" by Bryan Adams (at least I think that's what it was :? )

Michelle's Winter got to me the first time I saw it, and her "Fields of Gold" at the Olys.

Scott's last skate in Portland ME at SOI - I think I started crying before he took one stroke.

I'm a cryer so I've cried lots of times. Rudy Galindo's LP at 96 Nationals will [b:c8f1a2df74]STILL[/b:c8f1a2df74] make me cry. Katia skating at Sergei's tribute is a real tear jerker for me.

And I cried watching Sarah Hughes LP at the Olympics! Loved that! Michelle's skating always moves me but I can't think when I've actually cried watching her except the exhibition program at the Olympics.

I've only cried twice: when Katia skated at the Sergei tribute, and when Michelle skated FoG.

The most memorable times I have cried shen someone is skating, are:

*Most recently, when S&P skated to "Love Story" at the Olympics (even casual skating fan husband bawled right along with me!)

*When S&P won Worlds in 2001...we were in row 4!

*Scott's farewell performance in Vancouver last year

*When Katia skated at Sergei's tribute

Probably many more, too, but those are the ones that stick in my mind.

Hmmm.... which have made me cry? I can say I cried alot during the Olympics, but more so at the Canadian Nationals when I saw Elvis Stojko & Shae-Lynn Bounre and Victor Kraatz live.
Shae & Vic's OD made me go through all possible emotions... I screamed, cried, everything...
And Elvis, well what can I say about Elvis? A quad-triple in the same building where he first landed the jump! I was crying from the first moment I just saw him standing in the CTV booth! LOL
But his Dragon at Nationals was a heart-ripper. And it made me just fall into a pool of tears. Made me wish that he'd never leave the skating seen, but lookee here. He's gone :( [/color:7a01258901]

There's been a few, but the standouts...

Katia's Mahler program for Sergei

Kurt's Bring Him Home, both versions.

Liz Manley's Calgary LP

Brian Orser's The Story of My Life

Barb and Paul's Yesterday and Not A Day Goes By

Strangely enough, I never cried for Jamie and David for their Worlds win last year or Olympics this year. When I got home and watched the tape of Vancouver Worlds w/my parents....That was a different story. :D I'm sure if I watched Love Story today, I'd be able to say the same thing.

I'm in the same league w/Lee. There's always one performance per competition that will start the ol waterworks.

For me, it can only be [b:99f4198ae6]Elvis[/b:99f4198ae6]. Back in Nagano when he skated with the groin injury was the first time. Last year at worlds as he struggled, I struggled with tears. And then this year at Nats. His short to [b:99f4198ae6]drums [/b:99f4198ae6]brought a few tears, but his long to [b:99f4198ae6]Dragon [/b:99f4198ae6]-- well, I'm not ashamed of the tears that fell that day, nor all the times I have watched the tape. Even when I hear the music to Dragon (have it on my computer) my eyes still well up and I get a bit choked up. I'm really going to miss that man! I so wish him the best and hope he tours near my home.

I have never really cried, but maybe got a tear in my eye on:

Sale & Pelletier - 2002 Olympic LP (happy then  :x  )
Bereznhaya & Sikharalidze - 2002 Olympic SP
Todd Eldredge - 2002 Olympic SP (I was so sad )
Sasha Cohen - 2002 Nationals SP
Michelle Kwan - 2001 Worlds LP
Tara Lipinski - 1998 Olympics LP

I find that I'm most apt to cry if the skate has particular meaning to the skater and they have a truly emotional connection to it.

There are many skates but as examples I'll list:
Katia's tribute to Segei
Underhill/Martini's tribute to Barb's daughter
Sarah's tribute to 9/11
just about anyone's farewell skate!

Move over Tig and Lee.... do you have any extra kleenex?

Many times! Some I can remember-

Every time Michelle cries, I cry. Plus almost all her exhbitions make me cry, but especially Dante's Prayer, Fields of Gold and Winter.

Katia- her tribute to Sergei, how hauntingly beautiful was that?

I cried at the end of Sarah's long program at the Olympics.

I cried during the pairs medal ceremony at the Olympics. Both of them.

I was caught completely offgaurd by Michelle's Field of Gold routine during the Olympic exhibition. It was such a beautiful performance, and I had tears welling up in my eyes near the end. But, boy, when the camera zoomed in and showed her crying, I started bawling. I couldn't believe how emotional I became.

I cry every time Michelle skates. The first time this happened though was when I watched her "East of Eden" at World Pro. It not only made me cry but sent chills down my spine.

The 1995-96 pro season:

* Oksana Baiul - [i:cc6bb563b1]You'll See[/i:cc6bb563b1] (I lose it just thinking of that one)
* Scott Hamilton - [i:cc6bb563b1]One for the Road[/i:cc6bb563b1] at the Canadian Open
* Paul Wylie - it wasn't the program so much as his interview where he described his thoughts while skating the program; he became choked up and I've never watched that program without seeing Sergei and getting tears in my eyes
* The tribute to Sergei Grinkov -- a group of us sobbed in front of the television from beginning to end

Scott Hamilton's Celebration:
* his friends doing takeoffs on his programs (whoever would have thought Brian Boitano in a chicken suit would provoke tears? )
* Scott's words, [i:cc6bb563b1]I win![/i:cc6bb563b1]

1996-97 Pro season:
* Paul Wylie's [i:cc6bb563b1]Schindler's List[/i:cc6bb563b1] -- can't remember the event -- think either Ice Wars or U.S. vs. the World

1994 Olympics
* Oksana Baiul's joyous freeskate
* Katarina Witt's [i:cc6bb563b1]Schindler's List[/i:cc6bb563b1] -- I think that is one of the all time great programs

1992(or was it 1994?) Olympics
* Mishkutenok & Dmetriev's [i:cc6bb563b1]Liebestraume[/i:cc6bb563b1]

2002 Olympics
* Sarah Hughes magnificent freeskate
* Michelle Kwan's touching exhibition

Brian Orser's tribute to his mother in SOI (1999?)

And these are just a few -- scary!

Oh, I know! I know! Last season's Stars on Ice in Dallas. Kurt Browning skated off with my daughter's stuffed frog (Smoochy) but he brought him back after letting him sit on Roca's head for a moment and take bows with everyone. But, then he gave my daughter a big hug....and never even saw me standing next to her begging him to give me a hug too......sigh.....so close.....

Yes. I cried when Oksana skated her SP at 94 Olympics; when I first saw Kwan's Rach, especially the inside to outside edge spiral; when Ilia Kulik won at Nagano and when I saw Lang and Tchernachev's OD this season at Nationals...just an amazing program.

I cry when I watch skating competitions, I can't help it. I cry when my favorite does very well, or does very poorly. I cried because Michelle Kwan didn't do as well as expected in the Olympics. I also cried because I was so happy for Sarah Hughes. I can't help but cry. :?

No, but Fumie Suguri [b:2ab6242395]nearly[/b:2ab6242395] made me cry with her Ave Maria short program at Worlds. She has such a wonderful musical and emotional style.

Well, so actual skating has never made me cry, but I admit I have cried before when skaters I like have had a complete meltdown. Usually when they themselves have cried tooo.

Michelle Kwan's olympic exhibition (sad tears)
Katia's tribute to Sergei (sad tears)
Jamie & David's Love Story at Olympics (happy tears followed by sad tears) and again when they got presented with gold.
Todd Eldredge - 2002 Olympic SP (sad tears)
S&P 2001 Worlds (happy)
Brian Orser's The Story of My Life (sad)
Joanna Glick (I think that is her name) at the tribute show.
Jennifer Robinson when she skated off the ice after 1999 or 2000 worlds (not sure which one it was) saying "I did it, I did it". I believe she came in 8th.
Jennifer Robinson after her 2002 Worlds SP (sad) and again when she skated great in the LP. She was so proud of herself.
Watching Victor Kratz on the podium 2002 worlds silver. The look on his face and eyes as big as saucers watching the Canadian Flag rise.
Elvis - as soon as he finished skating at 98 olympics and we knew he was injured
Elvis again when he did his skate around waving before the 2002 Canadian LP
Elvis yet again at the tribute to him after Canadian Exhibition.
And yet once more Elvis - everytime he mouthed the words "I'm sorry" after a bad skate and "finally" after trying for two seasons and finally getting his quad/triple back.
I don't think it will hit me that he is gone until he isn't there next season.
(tears in the eyes just thinking about it)

Gosh, I've teared up a couple of times just reading some of your posts here! I also got a tear the first time I saw the ending to Paul Wylie's 'JFK' where he assumes the salute pose, Michelle's 'Field of Gold' exhibition at Olys, Katia's first time in a spotlight after Sergei's death because she looked so fragile and I admired her courage. The Protopopofs make me tear up just by skating onto the ice hand-in-hand.

Sarah's long program at the Olympics...and her reaction to winning

S&P Love Story

Rudy Galindo's win in 96...God that just makes me howl dont' know why...maybe because it was so unexpected.

Lu Lu at the Olympics in 1998.

Paul Wylie Schindlers List and JFK

In retrospect, but not at the time, I was watching Lyra from '98 Nationals yesterday, and I started bawling. Couldn't help thinking--why couldn't that have happened at either Olympics? Oh well, still a great skate.

Otherwise, Michelle at SLC and Rudy at '96 Nationals, but I don't usually cry over skating. Yelling at the TV is a much more common behavior for me.

It happens to me now and then ....... the most memorable one would have to be Jen Robinson's LP at 2000 Worlds when she finally cracked the top 10.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that cries over skating!
I can be brought to tears by a relatively low level skater who has the performance of a lifetime and you can see the pure joy of skating when they are on the ice! But, of people we all know, here is the list - at least the times I remember:
Paul Wylie - JFK
Todd Eldredge - Glory at the Masters last year, it gave me chills. Todd at the 98 Olympics, out of sadness. Todd at the '02 Olympics, long program, when he took in the moment at the end of his performance, bittersweet but satisfying, as a true champion.
Michelle Kwan - Fields of Gold at the Olympics, East of Eden when she is really "on"
Sale and Pelletier - Love Story, Olympics
Just about any Gordeeva and Grinkov program, now, and her first solo performance, too.
I cry for a good medal ceremony, too.

 quite a few times but I have to join the growing list of Brian Orser's The Story of My Life on MANY occasions.(not to mention after Calgary 88 and when I read a horrible bash article in a Toronto newspaper). Also -although this is bad timing bc of recent events- I have to say I bawled when Underhill and Martini skated their last performance and BU looked as though she were going to throw up. And to add to the torture, Brian Orser appeared as a surprise and skated what for them?... The Story of My Life! The tears are automatic like when I hear the Hagood Hardy music from Anne of Green Gables! Anyway, sorry for long post! (And I've barely started really!)

I know most of these have already been mentioned many times, but here are mine.

Sad tears:

...Katia's Mahler Tribute (not to mention virtually the entire COAL show)
...Kurt Browning after his 1994 Olympic SP--enough said!
...virtually all of Josée's long programs at Worlds (again, enough said!)
...Underhill and Martini's Yesterday program and their final performance at One Last Time
...B&K falling at the end of their Olympics FD
...Elvis' 1998 Olympics LP

Happy tears:

...Josée at 1993 Canadians and virtually every year she competed at Canadian Pros/Open
...B&E at 1993 Worlds
...Kurt and Elvis taking the top two spots at 1993 Worlds
...Lulu winning her second Olympic bronze medal
...S&P at the end of their 2002 Olympics LP [b:67cc10cd4f]before[/b:67cc10cd4f] the entire judging controversy took place. It was just sooo wonderful to [b:67cc10cd4f]finally[/b:67cc10cd4f] see Canadian skaters performing at their best at the Olympics and it looked like the curse might finally be broken for about two minutes before S&P received their marks.
...Liz Manley at 1988 Olympics
...Brian Orser [b:67cc10cd4f]finally[/b:67cc10cd4f] winning Worlds in 1987 after placing second for sooo many years, his Story of My Life program, and his Somewhere In Time number (not to mention his reaction to winning!) at 2001 Canadian Open. I would have cried even harder at Somewhere in Time had I known it would be the final number he'd perform at SOI! :(
...the entire Scott Hamilton: Back on the Ice show
...finally getting to see Kurt and his wife Sonia perform together during his Gotta Skate special last fall

I'm pleasantly surprised to realize I've cried many more "happy" tears than sad ones while watching skating!

Nope, never cried and probably never will. 8O
Good skating doesn't affect me that way.
I get excited and all in awe of what I see.

When I watched Michelle Kwan's exhibition piece (fields of gold?), I thought it was a bit sad when I saw the tears streaming down her face.

Ask my family - I cry at anything! Hallmark commercials, Kindergarten tea receptions, first day of school, Ally McBeal's ending, weddings... I'm a walking faucet!

So, that confession aside - I cried during Alexei's GP win this year, Sarah's Olympic win, Michelle's Olympic exhibition, Todd's SP, Alexei's LP reaction, S&P after the LP, Oksana Baiul's Sergei tribute... Sometimes I hear the music start for a program, it brings up a memory and I start tearing.

Of course during the past season, I was normally so vocal the cat was in hiding! It took her 3 hours to come anywhere near me after the GP Final! 8)

Dustin, Sk8reilly and Miezekatze- and myself....Patty I'm not sure if you were or weren't a crier.....
Were we the only non-criers?

I think, that I probably WOULD cry, but only on the following 2 conditions:

1) I'd cry if it was my daughter doing her first programme. :P
2) I'd cry if someone from my rink won an International title.

Nah, I'm not a cryer either ... the only times I've been choked have been with kids I know:

My skating friend, Hollie, skating at the British Championship qualifiers; my skating friend Emma skating a BEAUTIFUL solo Free Dance at our Opens; Suzi, an autistic girl who skated the programme of her life at Inter-Silver level and totally blew the rest of the skaters away and Hols and her ex-partner Damion doing their Inter-Gold Free Dance test TWICE (one test each) and skating the best that I'd ever seen them, our tests are usually fairly solemn and quiet but people were actually applauding while they were skating :D

Her 98 Olympic Short program broke my heart. As did her return at the "Gran Prix of Skating" that Fox Network did. She just seemed like she would never get it back. I am happy she kicked butt @ the Canadian Open. I just can't understand how she lost it so bad and then got it back so quickly... hmmm

I've only cried once watching skating. Elvis Stoiko at 2001 Skate Canada. I don't why, but all of a sudden I started bawling. I'm sad to see him go. :( I hope he has a g8 pro career!

i cried when they had the tribute to elvis at canadian nationals and he started to cry when rod said you were named after elvis and i jsut met a baby boy that was named after you! i BAWLED!

I've cried a few myself...

~Katia's tribute to Sergei (Mahler piece)
~Michelle during her Fields of Gold piece at the Olympics
~For Elena and Anton in SLC (tears of joy, and sadness).
~For Elvis at the '94 Olympics when he lost to Urmanov.
~When G&G won in Lillehammer (tears of joy!)

I usually only tear up if I'm *really* moved, like at the end of Todd's program at Nationals this year--which is REALLY weird since I'm usually so ambivalent about him.

I teared up during FoG at the Olys...esp as the camera zoomed into Michelle's face.

I teared up at the end of Marina and Gwendal's Liberta at the Olys

I teared up from shock after learning that Alexei Urmanov had to withdraw from Worlds in 97 bc of the groin injury, when he was leading from the short program.

I teared up after seeing Elena's one, lone tear at the end of their Chaplin exhibition at hte Olys.

I CRIED real tears watching FS probably three times:

1. Katia's Mahler tribute...her especially, but also the rest of the cast.
2. Oksana Baiul's You'll See tribute to Sergei
3. I cried like a baby at Elena and Anton's reactions to the response they got from the Canadian crowd...

this is my first post here--I'm another (very disgruntled) former FSWer...

Cheers, Orable

The whole "Celebration of a Life".

Oksana's "You'll See"-- one of the most raw programs I've ever seen by anyone.

There's more I'm sure, but those stand out in terms of the sheer gravity of the emotions involved. Other times it's more that I'm feeling sort of sentimental and the music will be just right and the skater will be doing just the kind of thing that it all makes me a bit teary.

In recent memory, just two. The first was when Shae and Vic fell at the Olympics- and trust me, I was not the only skater from Newington who cried over that. The second was when they finished their FD at Worlds- I couldn't watch the last lift, but I heard the crowd cheering so I knew they had done it. I really thought they would be third again- call me superstitious- so I was thrilled to see them second, even though I reall really really wanted them to win.

The only time I recall actually shedding tears (happy tears) was this past year when Ilia Kulik won the Hallmark Skaters Championship. But, there have been several other performances over the years that have caused me to get a little misty-eyed.

Almost anytime Oksana Baiul is "on" she is liable to make me weepy--most notablely her tribute to Sergei--"You'll See" & "The Color of Night".

Scott comeback special--- also happy tears!

The first time I saw Klimova & Ponomarenko's "Romeo & Juliet".

Katia's Tribute to Sergei special

Ilia's win at Nagano :D

Underhill and Martini's "Yesterday." Every time i see it, i get choked up. The first time i saw it was the only time i cried for this program.

Kurt at the Lillehammer Olympics, after the short program when the reality of the situation became clear and undeniable, that he would not win a medal, again.

Kurt at Lillehammer again, after skating that magical "Casablanca," despite knowing that no matter how well he skated, he would not win a medal, but he still gave it 100%.

Elvis, at Nagano, as he was sitting in the Kiss 'n Cry, hurting.
Elvis, at the 2002 Nationals after the long program where he landed his quad jumps.

Everytime i watch my G/G tapes, i get choked up when i get to near the end of my tape. Sometimes i cry, but most times, i just feel very sad.

Not a big crier, but I almost had tears in my eyes during Michelle's Olympic exhibition.

Oh, and I made my myself cry when I stabbed my foot through my skating boot down to the tendon. Does that count? (The foot is fine now despite a ridiculous ER fee; the boot is also fine after being fixed by my fabulous skate guy.)

Sometimes it's the skater, sometimes the program, and sometimes the "event". I've cried often.

Toller...I Pagliacci (and others)...his sheer brilliance at gathering you in and holding you there
Kurt...Bring him home (the early version...unbelievably touching), and several others (including tribute to Sonja)
Elvis...the Tribute show, Nagano, Lillehammer
Brian Orser...The Story of My Life...his mother's favourite program...have cried more than once over this one
Alexei...Gladiator (there's something about this program and the way he skates it...with so much emotion...it's one of the most memorable men's skating programs for me)
Lu Chen...1995 Worlds...The Last Emporer...a superb performance
Isabelle and Lloyd...when she skated with the cracked rib, and he just about carried her off the ice at the end; another Isabelle and Lloyd moment...when he hoisted her up onto his shoulder after their bronze medal performance
Michelle - several times
Jen Robinson at last year's Sears Open
Torvill&Dean - the sheer power of Bolero (I cried my eyes out and gave them a standing ovation...and I was at home LOL); I also cried at their Matadore and Cape program
Klimova and Ponomarenko...several times...the classiest dance couple I've ever watched
Underhill and Martini..several times
S&P...Love Story
John Curry...all he had to do was skate
Scott Hamilton...I laughed and cried at the same time with many of his programs...he has the ability to express a wonderful mixture of humour and pathos

Oh gads, I could go on and on...I better stop...makes me want to go back and watch so many programs over (and some of them I don't have on tape...sigh)!

Yeah, Alexei, numerous times, especially during- and after his LP at the Worlds 1999, his LP at Euros 2001, his SP at Worlds 2001 and of course after he won the Olympics (... and today after watching a pic of his new hairdo,). There's something about him .....

Over and above that:

Tears of joy when Lulu performed her Rachmaninov LP at the Worlds 1996 in Edmonton. Sheer beauty! And tears of frustration/fury after that because Kwan got the Gold.

Tears of joy when Ilia Kulik won Olympics 1998.
Tears of joy when Oksana Baiul won Olympics 1994.

Tears of suspense, excitement and emotion during the battle of the Brian's 1988 at the Oly's in Calgary.

Tears of frustration at the Worlds 1997 when Urmanov had to withdraw because of injury right before the LP.

Oh, and hello - nice to see familiar names here again! :D

I'm with MelanieUK -- I'm too excited to cry usually, I just love watching skaters skate!

However, I did COMPLETELY lose it during Michelle's Fields of Gold at the Olympics. When she did the split falling leaf I welled up and by the time she got to the sit-spin I was dripping, but when the camera zoomed in on her face at the completion of the program, I just threw myself onto the sofa sobbing. Admittedly, I was under a large amount of stress at the time and I think that played into my unusual reaction -- I don't even react to anything in real life like that, LOL!

Anyhoo, the program that made me cry -- Midori Ito's free skate in Albertville. The moment she landed that triple axel (and I heard Scott Hamilton SCREAM!), I started crying like a baby. I couldn't stop crying for a long time. It was so wonderful to see Midori happy again.
Still today, whenever I watch that program on tape, I cry like a baby. And I'm ten years older than I was back then!

There were many other programs that made me cry -- a little. But nothing tops this one.

I find it hard to hold back the tears whenever a skater is emotional because they have or haven't done well.

However I've never cried as much as I did during the Elvis tribute at Canadians this year and there have been just as many tears every time I've re-watch it.

Oh man! I have cried so many times watching skating! A couple times that come to mind right now are Salé and Pelletier's [i:804facefa2]Love Story[/i:804facefa2] at the Olympics, Michelle Kwan's [i:804facefa2]Fields of Gold[/i:804facefa2] at the Olympics (it was so sad to see her crying, that I just started bawling too), and quite a few times while watching Bourne and Kraatz, just because I love them so much. My real problems come whenever I get really close to Shae-Lynn and Victor. I look up to them so much, and the few times that I have met them, I started crying right there! The only thing that I could say to them was "I love you"! They must have thought that I was crazy!

New here... just jumped over from FSW... anyway, there are plenty of times when a skating performance has brought me to tears, but unless the program is that phenomenal, it's usually just when I've got a connection with who's skating it. The last time I remember crying over a performance was Matt Savoie's 02 Nationals LP. I train with Matt every day, so my heart just goes out to him when he's on the ice. I cried over his short, too, because I was so happy for him, but I was bawling after his long, when he didn't make the Olympic team.

I don't typically cry at a skater's performance however like Elvii I too cried like a baby during the Tribute to Elvis at this years Canadians as well as throughout most of the coverage of Elvis like the things other skaters like Michelle Kwan, Alexei Yagudin, Jennifer Robinson, etc. had to say about him and all the things the coaches and media said about him, and the montages they did, and well you get the point, lol.

The skates that make me tear up the most are when a skater you don't expect to be great pulls off a terrific performance. The best example that comes to mind is Tanja Szewczenko's long program at the 1997 GPF (it was called something else then but I can't remember the name). I remember she skated to the "Speed" soundtrack and Dorothy Hamill was saying during the commentary that Tanja had nearly died the year before from a virus and was trying to come back, and actually had the flu during the competition. So I wasn't expecting much, but she went out there and fought and skated clean. I was crying by the time she landed her 4th jump, and I just knew she was going to make it through that program. It's funny how sometimes you're watching a skater and you can tell they're going to get it done. I just love that feeling, like you're sharing the emotional rush right with the skater. I had that feeling watching Sale and Pelletier at the Olympics, and also when Todd Eldredge won his world title in 1996. There was a Paul Wylie program that also made me cry - I think the song was "This Is My Moment." What I wouldn't give for a RealVideo of that program! And who didn't just bawl when Michelle skated to Lyra Angelica at the 1998 nationals? Oh, let's just face it - I'm a blubbering fool for great skating!

I cried at the 2002 Masters Miko in Paris when I saw the tribute to A&P performed by all the ice dance teams training with them in Lyon. A&P were crying, and it was full of emotion, especially knowing that it was one of the last time we would see them skate.

I have cried happy tears and sad tears

sad tears:
I think I cried for days for Elvis at 98 Olympics
Michelle Kwan at the Olympic Gala....I think just the Fields of Gold message and the fact that she was crying
Sale and Pelletier at Olympics FS...I am more of a fan of B&S, but when they were in the K&C it ripped my heart out because I thought they should have won.
Bourne and Kraatz at the end of their FD at Olympics

happy tears:
Alexei's FS at 2001 Worlds
Sarah Hughes FS at Olympics
Tara Lipinski's FS at 98 Olympics
B&S SP at 2001 GP Final
Elvis's reactions at 2000 Worlds

Well this is my first post in this forum.

I think that the two presentations made me cry

1. Plushenko when he fell and his SP at SLC, I'm a huge big fan of Plushenko so I couln't hold my tears when he fell.
2. Michelle Kwan exhibition program Fields of Gold at SLC, when she finished and they showed that she was crying, that made me cry too.

[quote:9ac3873e63="¤Sweetie¤"]And Elvis, well what can I say about Elvis? A quad-triple in the same building where he first landed the jump! I was crying from the first moment I just saw him standing in the CTV booth! LOL
But his Dragon at Nationals was a heart-ripper. And it made me just fall into a pool of tears. Made me wish that he'd never leave the skating seen, but lookee here. He's gone :( [/color:9ac3873e63][/quote:9ac3873e63]

I didn't cry so much during the free skate as I did during his performance of "The Impossible Dream" at the exhibitions. He said he chose the song because of the lyrics, and they did represent him and his career to a T.

I did cry (and scream!) when he landed the quad-triple though. I was so glad I got to see that live -- It was the first and only time I'd ever gotten to see him compete, so it's a very special memory for me on several levels. Watching the tapes still gets me teary-eyed on occasion.

And he's far from gone... when my friends and I talked to him backstage at COI recently, he rattled off a schedule that's keeping him quite busy -- and he's looking forward to the Elvis Tour in November. He seemed excited about it, saying that he has "a few tricks up my sleeve" for it. :) But he did say he wouldn't be getting home until September -- for a week off before he does something else again. Poor guy! You're supposed to kick back when you retire!

I went to the Skating Tribute by Peggy Fleming this past October 2, 2002 at Madison Square Garden, New York. It was for the 25th Anniversary of the future Olympians that died in a crash. However, due to Sept. 11th the show was combined with Patriotism and I would have to say that I was pretty moved most of the show. Sarah Hughes skated to "You'll Never Walk Alone" and Scott Hamilton skated to an American song which I forget but he skated like an Eagle. I cried and for good reason to what has happened to our Country but we will prevail as we are a strong Nation.

I cried watching S/P perform Love Story at 99 Skate America, Nationals 00, ans Olympics 02. To me that is the best choreographed/performed pairs program ever.

I cried watching Elvis Win the worlds in 97, that was such an amazing performance. And when he mouthed the words "I'm sorry" to the crowd in Vancouver at 01 worlds, i cried and said back to the TV, "its okay Elvis don't be sorry, we are still proud of you", then i cried some more when the crowd sang him Happy - Birthday. I cried after the Long program at the 98 olympics, I was so proud of him. I cried at the nationals in 2002 more then i have ever cried before, every moment they talked about him or showed him i cried, cause i knew that this was the last nationals we would ever see him in. I tried keeping my composure for the Long Program, but when he started waving to the crowd, i lost it, ( to all of you who were in Hamilton, thankyou for giving him a standing O, just for waving, it was so touching to watch) I cried like a baby during the tribute to him at 2002 nationals too. I think you pretty much get the picture, i cry at every Elvis moment.

I cried watching Jen Robinson do her long at the 2002 worlds - what a skate she did more triples then Irina, Michelle, or Fumie, Imagine if she had a clean short. WOW!

I'm a total softie, so there have been many. These particular performances come to mind:

Brian Orser "Only the very best"
Michelle Kwan "Fields Of Gold" and "Dante's Prayer"
Tanja Szewczenko "Speed"
Katarina Witt "Sister's Keeper"
Liz Manley "The Impossible Dream", "Legends of the fall" and "I love you, goodbye"
Underhill/Martini "Have you ever been in love?" and "Not a day goes by" from their farewell show

and, of course, so many of my sister's programs that I can't even count. :)

Michelle Kwan, Fields of Gold, SLC, exhibition.
Elvis (many times - especially when he had to fight to the end).
Alexi (just because I love him)
Jennifer (Worlds Long Program - 2001) so happy for her.

Unlike most of you, I have never cried during or after a performance BUT I have felt something like chills...

Pairs - love story(Canadian nationals 2000, SA 1999, GPF 2001 and SLC 2002)
- tristan&isolde(worlds 2001 and 4CC)
- Moonlight Sonata(LP Lillehammer 1994)
- ?(Underhill&Martini worlds 1984)

Dance - Bolero(FK worlds 1984)

I have cried once, BEFORE a skate...Jamie and David free skate in SLC 2002. Weird, eh?

There have been several over the years:

- Biotano after his 88' LP
- Kwan after worlds 96' LP
- After LuLu and Kwan 98' Olympic LP
- After Todd's 2002 Olympic SP...SO sad
- Fumie after 2002 Worlds LP

These all brought tears to the eyes...

However, nothing for me compares to the tears that FLOWED from me at the end of Michelle's "Fields of Gold" exhibition at Salt Lake. I was not prepared for that at all, and when the camera showed her crying and Scott commentating, while choking up himself...I lost it. That was a very powerful moment for me...thinking about it and typing it makes me tear up. :(

The only time I actually cried was when Rudy skated his 1996 Nationals LP. It made me feel so good, and it was so beautiful, I could not help it.

I had gotten tears in my eyes when Maria realized that she won 1999 Worlds, and after realizing that Sarah won SLC. Both times were so honest and just.....

I cry ALL THE TIME watching skating competitions. I cry if skaters I hardly know do well, or don't do well, and I cry even more if it's skaters I know and really like. It's a little bit pathetic, really.[/color:a6cda114d3]

I haven't really cried when watching skating but I've got tears in my eyes plenty of times. Usually it's when a skater cries (out of sadness or happiness) because seeing people cry always makes me cry! lol. Ones I can think of right now are Oksana Baiul in the Kiss n Cry after her LP in Lillehammer (especially when she found out she won), Tara Lipinski after her LP in Nagano (especially in the Kiss n Cry), Sale&Pelletier in the Kiss n Cry after their LP in 01 Worlds, Michelle Kwan at the end of her LP in 01 Worlds (because of her facial expression and how she pumped her fists and looked like she might cry, and because the screen behind her was filled with an American flag from the audience, and she was getting a standing ovation and I just couldn't imagine how wonderful that feeling must be). Also Alexei Yagudin getting his marks in Salt Lake, and he cried, and BBC commentator Barry Davies said "He will stand tall among the list of great Olympic champions."
Also the look on Elvis's face at the end of his LP in Nagano, knowing how much pain he was in and thinking about the fact that he had just given the performance he had, even though he had such terrible injuries.
The most recent one, that I remember most, is Michelle Kwan's Fields of Gold. I got tears in my eyes near the end when Eva Cassidy sang "Ooooh", and the whole song was just so poignant. And when the camera focused on Michelle's tearstained face at the end, and Robin Cousins and Barry Davies spoke quietly and said how beautiful she was.

I just got a tape of the tribute to Elvis at Canadian Nationals, and another moment for me was the look on his face when he first was waving to the crowd and getting such an ovation, and at points during the video, especially when that guy said about the woman naming her baby after him. I love Elvis!!

I'd break my emotional reactions down into different categories:

DIDN'T CRY but felt particularly emotional (more like stunned awe):
S & P Olympic Love Story, T & D Olympic Bolero, Kulik's Nagano Long, Nancy K. @ 94 Olys.
Paul Wylie, SOI (in-person), "Schindler's List."

GOT OUT AND OUT VERKLEMPT (ranging from lump in throat to really tearing up).

1) For athletes who'd been through a lot:
Lulu 98 Olympics
Nicole-the-neverending-drama-Bobek on several occasions.
Also, probably Tanja S. at that GP final and Rudy 96 Nats.

2) Particular performances that are emotional for personal reasons:

Brian O (in person), Dreams on Ice, "Story of My Life." He started talking about his mum, how she was from the area, etc. Oh, boy, I lost it before the skating even began.

The Carlo Fassi tribute. The last several skaters -- Paul, Nicole, Peggy, Robin -- gave such emotional performances.

Joanna Glick @ the MSG tribute.

MK "Hands" -- actually, I don't know if I cried while watching, but this is my fave exhibition of hers and I get very mellow when I hear that song and think of her skating it.

Sarah Hughes -- "The Prayer," Winter 99-00 pro-am. Wonderful feeling for the emotion of the music; at the end she looked upward and mouthed the words, "Thank you." Aww.

Paul Wylie after Grinkov died, doing the Apollo 13 ("Gentlemen, it's been a pleasure ...")
Ditto Scott H. at a fall 95 pro-am dedicating "One for My Baby ..."

3) Random misc. moments:
Elvis sitting in pain in the K &C after the Nagano LP, seeing his mother and saying, "Hi, Mom. I love you." (And I'm not even a Stojko fan.)

I know there's been other moments involving dancers and other pairs, for instance ...

Well numerous skaters have made me cry.

These are as follows;

Jamie Sale & David Pelletier[/color:da9b8e1574]-Love Story at the 2000 Canadians and the 2002 Olympics. It was just so beautifully skated both times. What made me cry even more was the fact they got second place at the time of the Olympics at that point, it was just the look on their faces, and that I felt their pain as well. I also started to cry when they won their world title as well. So well deserved.

Shae Lynn Bourne & Victor Kraatz[/color:da9b8e1574]-2002 GPF. It was a masterpiece on ice with their MJ routine. I have never seen them skate like that in a very long time. They pleased the crowd with that performance. It was about time that the judges judged what they saw on that night, not what they saw from past performances/behaviour.
I also cried when they fell at the last seconds of their routine at the 2002 Olympic games. The bronze medal was in their reach, and it just slipped right out of their hands. I have never seen Victor so mad before in his life.

Elvis Stojko[/color:da9b8e1574]-2002 Canadians. When he finally nailed the quad that he was unable to land for a long time, oh and not to forget the tribute that they did for him. I still cry when I think of it. I think I was in tears more than him that night at Copps Colliseum. The whole arena was balling their eyes out. It was a night that I will never forget.

Sarah Hughes[/color:da9b8e1574]-2002 Olympic Games. Need I say more????? She truly deserved that title.

Well, I'm usually just excited if skaters do well but like many other I definitely had a few tears when the camera showed Michelle crying after FOG at the Olys.

Salé and Pelletier at the Olympics, I was so happy for them and then when the results came up I was crying buckets.

Normally, I just get really excited for the skaters though but maybe I"m getting more emotional as I grow up!

Just reading this thread makes me cry as it brings back memories of all of these great skates. When I saw Brian Orser skate to "Somewhere in Time" at last year's Canadian Open, the tears poured down my cheeks. The same thing happens when I watch Emanuel Sandhu skate to classical music. Also, Josee Chouinard would have me in tears when she would react emotionally after a competition.

Here are a few that quickly come to mind:

Gordeeva and Grinkov, outdoors on a snowy evening at Sun Valley, performing to an excerpt from "Nutcracker" for one of the Disney shows around Christmas of '94. This one touched a nostalgic nerve related to childhood memories of Christmas cheer.

Kovarikova and Novotny receiving their gold medal at '95 Worlds. The playing of their national anthem, just a few days after I had played it with our band for President Vaclav Havel as he placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, brought a few tears to my eyes. I have always had a soft spot for Czechoslovakia and its successor republics.

Plenty of moments during the Sergei Grinkov tribute, especially when little Daria gave her mother a gentle pat on the back.

Katia got me going again with a beautiful performance to Grieg's "Morning Mood" at a pro competition Thanksgiving week '96.

Paul Wylie's "Apollo 13".

Joanna Glick's tribute to her brother last fall.

Michelle's Olympic "Fields of Gold", especially when Scott Hamilton got a bit choked up afterward.

Best wishes to all. I just discovered this site while browsing Michelle Kwan Forum.

Yep, I'm a crier too. The first time I ever cried was the tribute to Sergei after his death. Easpecially Katia's Mahler program. Everytime i hear that music I cry
Other performances/events include:
Jen Robinson after her LP and in the Kiss and Cry at the 2000(?) worlds... what an amazing program from her
Jayson Denommee after he tried to compete in his long program at nationals the one year (2000 or 2001) and then he kept falling and he hit his head. Then he finally had to withdraw. He's my fave skater and I bawled for ages after that.
Elvis' LP at Nationals this past year as well as that tribute to him.
Sale and Pelletier's Love Story at the Oylmpics. What can i say.

There's been other times i've cried, but those are the most memorable at the moment.

Michelle's FOG exhibition at SLC. The Oly gold seems to elude her and she's always so close to achieving it.

But I'm optimistic abt it. I hope she'll find enough inspiration to go for one in 2006. Age is not a problem, what matters is her determination. Artur Dmitriev can do it, I'm sure Michelle can too. ;)
