Its a really long article, but on page 2 there's quotes from Kristine Stone-Cruz. Arsenette, this one is for you! ;)

I also thought of Arsenette when I read the article in my paper this morning.

Here was my favorite quote:

Laughing, she recounted a recent conversation with her friend and fellow figure skater, Sylvia Fontana of Italy. "We were talking about our bodies," Cruz said, "and she said because we aren't built like Sasha Cohen, we have to work harder to land our jumps."

It's an interesting article. On my son's JV high school soccer team all but three of the players are hispanic. On my daughter's JV high school soccer team, only one player is hispanic. Same high school. I've often wondered if this is just peculiar to their school. But, back to figure skating . . . I don't follow ice dancing very closely but as anyone successfully pulled off a Ballet Folklorico type program?

Thanks! I wasn't sure when this was going to come out.. they are also planning a feature just on Kristine in the near future.. I believe they did a photo session with her last week. I have no idea when that is coming out either. Thanks Adrian!

FYI, the print/paper version of this article has a nice B&W photo of Kristine from the waist up (smiling, standing on the ice, I think) and her parents on page D2. Caption reads: "Kristine Stone Cruz, center, a Puerto Rican skating champion, with her parents, Carmen and Christopher, at the Ice House in Hackensack, N.J."

I didn't buy the paper, just read it online. :(

:frus: - if only you had asked me on that day, I'd have picked one up on the way out from work. ;)

I actually have a dumb question but...

One of the girls at our club is Hispanic Canadian. She has dual citizenship-to El Salvador and Canada through her dad. Now, I've always wondered with skaters like these with dual citizenship...I know Mexico, a traditionally "non skating" country, now has skaters at the international level. If the skater has dual citizenship-does that mean she can compete for the other country-if she wanted to, even if it is not a "skating country"...[sorry, don't know how else I would phrase it...

Cheers all...

She can skate for Canada Internationally since Canada is a member of the ISU.. but she can't skate for El Salvador because they are not members of the ISU (as of yet).. We (Puerto Rico) can't either until we are accepted in the Union.. Mexico has been allowed to compete internationally since 1984 (when they became members of the ISU)..

A skater can represent a country internationally only if the country is a member of the International Skating Union. There's a list of member countries on the ISU site (El Salvador isn't one of them):
http://www.isu.org/organization/members.html

A few of these countries don't really have figure skating programs, either, but in that case something could probably worked out if enough money from some other source was available.

Arsenette could tell you a lot more than most of us about what a country goes through when trying to become an ISU member. :)

A skater doesn't have to be a citizen of the country they represent in ISU events, btw--the only exception is the Olympics, which does require citizenship.

its too bad about the hoops..this young lady is talented....just thought maybe, with all the girls in Canada she'd get a better chance through her other country....grin...sort of the fast track maybe....if she ever thought to pursue it....

Believe it or not.. it's HARDER through the smaller countries.. even worse if your country is not sanctioned because you need more skaters to constitute a "Federation".. Hey.. even considering the state of female Canadian skating these days.. she might come out if she's that talented ;)
