I was wondering, how often are rankings updated. Can someone provide me with the link please? Thanks.

Hey, Michelle is number one in the world!
I now sense a whole groundswell of people who think those ISU ratings really mean something!
But why is Plushenko ahead of Yagudin? Can someone explain that one to me?

The answer to these and other mysteries will be revealed to us when we pass through the Pearly Gates. Also answered will be the question of where the other sock when in the dryer!! :D

The ISU rankings are based on medals, not element by element skating or great programs and performances.
I don't know how they arrive at their conclusions, but my guess is that Plushenko entered and/or skated more events last season than Yagudin did and has matched him thise season so far; Irina was overall #1 last year I think, but hasn't skated this season, Kwan has so that nudged Kwan ahead.

loveskating is correct.
Was Plushenko ahead of Yagudin all last season in the ISU rankings in spite of Yagudin's victories in Grand Prix, Europeans, Olympics and Worlds and I simply didn't notice it?
Because nothing this season should have put Plushenko ahead of Yagudin.

i'm not going to worry about placements this early in the season. it's pointless. it will be totally different after the next competition.

Loveskating, so if Irina wins cup of Russia, that win should volt her back to number one, right.
Guess Sarah is stuck in 3rd again.

Hi Excidra:
I am just guessing...I haven't got a clue, really -- but the only way I could imagine that Plushenko would be ahead of Yags is that I know Yags opted out of some competitions last year that he was booked for? They must do a ratio or something? I don't even know if they include the Olympics?
Anyway, theoretically, guessing, if Irina skates and wins, I guess she would either be tied with Kwan or ahead of her again?
Gawd, I'm so glad I don't base who I like on medals or ratings (but its fine with me if others do, just not my cup of tea).

Yes, if Irina gets Gold or Silver at COR, she should pull ahead of Michelle. Sarah will stay in thrid because she missed 2002 Worlds and this years GP series.

...ITA 100% :)
It is obvious that if Michelle had not performed at Skate America, and if Sarah had, then the standings would be:
1) Sarah
2) Irina
3) Michelle
...and if no of these Ladies performed at Skate America, then it would be:
1) Irina
2) Sarah
3) Michelle
I am happy with any of those standings, though I prefer Sarah first! :)

despite Yagudin finishing ahead of Plushenko at Euros, the Olys, and also being the World champ, only one of those competitions count towards the rankings. the highest finish among ALL the events is what counts.
for example, if Yagudin finished first at the Olys but then bombed and finished 10th at Worlds (i know, it would never happen), he would still receive 1200 points for the year because of his Olympic win. then say, Plushenko finished 2nd at the Olys and 1st at Worlds, he would also get 1200 points for the season.
also, the rankings on based on the 3 previous seasons, which is why Michelle was consistently behind Irina in the rankings. Michelle did not compete on the GP in 99, so for the last 3 seasons, her point value was much lower than Irina's despite beating Irina twice at Worlds because 1) she didn't have the GP points to factor in and 2) Irina won Euros each of those years so she got 1200 points as well.
so its just a constant shuffle in accumulated points, and will probably take a few years to settle much like tennis. rankings will change from competition to competition, but it seems kind of futile. in tennis, players can play as many tournaments as they want to improve their ranking, but in skating, skaters are assigned to events. that's the fundemental difference. the ISU pretty much has the say in who can accumulate points, and who can't.
also, it is my understanding that Euros, 4CCs, Olys, and Worlds are weighted equally, but i'm not quite sure. someone correct me if i'm wrong.

yes, Sarah will stay in third, but not because she missed Worlds. her Olys win will count towards the point value. she will stay in third because she opted out of the GP this season.
also, does anyone know where the GPF points go? in the GP column or the Worlds column?
I don't think the point/ranking system is really a big deal. So many are "upset" that Michelle is ranked #1, above Sasha when it really isn't a big deal at all. I think everyone knows that with Michelle only competing in one GP event, she will not be ranked #1 for long.
I also find it very amazing that despite the fact Michelle didn't compete in the GP's in '99 she was still ranked #2, behind Irina. That speaks volumes about Michelle's skating!

i am wondering if they are ever going to take down the names of the skaters who have gone pro, like Maria B., S/P, F-P/M, A&P etc. or will they just let the other skater names catch up with them and then surpass them makin them fall to the bottom of the barrel.
I suppose they have some sort of software which generate those ratings from the results database. So I guess all the pros and no-longer-existing teams are not going to be removed...
Anyway I would like to see more details on how they distribute points. It seems all JGP events are worth 96 (1st place), but the winners of Senior GP are getting different amount of points...

I know senior GP winners receive points relative to the field. If Skate America has a deeper field than Skate Canada, than the winner at Skate America will receive more points for a win.
