Interesting articles I read in the Sunday paper for skaters who like to read & write:
The Writing LIfe by Beth Kephart (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A14268-2002Oct24.html)
Beth Kephart: Word Mover (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A14267-2002Oct24.html)

It's really beautifully written. I was thinking.. my ex-boyfriend is a musician (clarinetist) and I never could really explain to him the appeal of skating for me. The article with all its musical metaphors would have been the perfect thing. I think if you have a non-skating friend, this is a beautiful article which manages to convey some of what skating is to us (ex) FSWers :)
I like this part in particular:
"I am old enough to know that it's too late to change my ways. Old enough to recognize that I'll always be a skater among books. Now, in my writing life, I wake in the hours before dawn. After all these years, I still love -- I still require -- the essential qualities of darkness, the chill upon my face."
After all these years, I still love-- I still require-- the *essential qualities of darkness*, the chill upon my face. Isn't that a gorgeous sentence?
Thanks for the link.
