Maybe it had something to do with this article:

thanks for the link... however that doesn't tell me what he talked about if he did talk and if he skated....

I didn't see him talk, but I did see him skate to something from Hairspray the musical.

Before he skated Katie Couric interviewed him briefly. What I recall is her asking him why he had made the decision to quit eligible competition, and he basically said he'd had a long enough run and was ready to move on to new stuff. Then of course she asked him about skategate...I believe he said that the new proposals were a step forward, but there might be a rough transition during which not as many kids would enroll in skating (so the effects would be seen down the line).

He skated to a live performer, as Wayne said it was from "Hairspray".

Elvis did have a brief interview with Katie before he skated. He talked about being on the Winter and Spring COI tour, then he talked about his own Tour.

I can’t recall too clearly, but Katie touched on him going Pro and Elvis more or less said it was time to move on and do other thing. Those were not his words, but the essences of what he said.

There was really nothing new. It was the typical rushed pre-skate interview that is common on Today Show, in fact Katie told him to “get moving”. ;)

A Male vocalist, I never heard of him, sang something from Hairspray; I never heard of the song either. The song wasn’t too skatable.

That was Clarke Thorell, who plays Corny Collins in Hairspray on Broadway, singing "Nicest Kids in Town". I missed the broadcast but had heard that Clarke would be performing this on the Today show - I didn't realize it would be at the rink opening. I though it an odd choice too for a skating program, especially when there is such great fun music in Hairspray (though I do like this song, it works better in the context of the show).
