just was thinking about this....do I have it right:

The bottom of the thigh must be lower than the top of the knee?

Per this document (http://www.usfigureskating.org/content/IJS%20Handbook.pdf) (last page), the IJS definitions are:

BASIC SPIN POSITIONS | There are three basic positions:

• Camel - Free leg backwards with the knee higher than the hip level;

• Sit - Lower part of the buttocks not higher than the upper part of the knee of the skating leg, upper part of the skating leg at least parallel to the ice;

• Upright - Any position with skating leg extended or almost extended that is not a camel position; includes layback, Biellmann and similar variations.

All other positions are considered intermediate positions.

Which means - if you have an ample rear end -- then you should be able to have a slightly higher sit position!

Actually - at ISU CoP training seminar I attended, one of the skaters used to illustrate the correct sit spin position was too high in the knee as far as I was concerned. But the spin received a level 4! Sure the backward entry was there (1 bullet), and the 8 rotations (1 bullet) and the broken leg (1 bullet) and the pancake (1 bullet) = SSp4 . But her butt seemed too high. However, when the seminar leader drew a line from the bottom of her butt to the top of her knees - the line was parallel to the ice.

Does that mean that (ahem) adults should be able to get away with a higher sit spin????:lol: At least that's the rationale of some of my students....
