It's a shame they picked a location almost as far away from Vancouver as possible -- pretty much guaranteeing that very few of the top Olympic-hopeful skaters would attend. Normally I disapprove of the top skaters who skip 4CC, but this year, only 2 weeks away from the Games, and on the other side of the Date Line ...

I completely agree. There is no point for our americans and canadians going to the games to loose almost 30hours getting to and from a competition. Thats just too much time to loose training!!

Nice consolation prize for Kaitlyn and Andrew -- they missed making the Olympic team by the slimmest of margins.

Logically, it may even be a better prize than the Olympics, although emotionally it isn't. In winning here, they got 1) their first-ever gold medal, 2) valuable experience at how to skate for a win, but in a relatively low-pressure situation, 3) 840 ranking points, and 4) quite a bit of prize money. (I'm not sure of the prize money; it used to be $22,500, but I think that's been reduced.)
If they had gone to the Olympics, they would likely have finished somewhere between 10th and 12th, received about 400 ranking points and very little money.
In addition, they can now get an early start on their next season. They will still have to keep training this year's programs, of course, since they are alternates for Olympics and worlds, but they can already start on next year's plans. That extra time could really help them if they can use the extra time to continue to really improve. If they do that, I think they could make a big jump up the world standings next season.
