I am rooting for the hometown folks in Colorado! Go Ryan Bradley and Brandon Mroz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:yu m::mrgreen::yum::mrgreen::yum::mrgreen:

I'll definitely root for Mroz, but Evan's my fav.

Loving the synchro teams! My favorite part of Ice Capades - when the littlest skaters try to catch the pinwheels!

OK we finally got the judges introduced and here we go.

All those announcements and the little pre-show is making me want to buy tickets for next year's Nats.

I heard Wes Campbell had been injured not too long ago... got my fingers crossed for him

Weir just threw down a gauntlet - nice, clean skate. Hope he does the same in the LP. It's nice to see him do well.

I loved that sideways sit spin position before he flirted with the audience.

83.51 Nice score.

Razzano's quad - what a shame. It was rotated, but he sat down on the landing. Hope it doesnt' rattle his cage.

ETA: Nice recovery. He's a cutie. 64.27 score

83.51 Nice score.
Almost eclipsed the first skater on the technical score alone.

Isk8NYC

I LOVE TO WATCH PARKER PENNINGTON SKATE! Hope he does well.

He's got wicked fast sit spins (my favorite) and did pretty well.

sk8ryellow
01-15-2010, 10:13 PM
Parkers triple axel was a shame! He looked really nervous!

A.H.Black
01-15-2010, 10:15 PM
Despite the fall, I think that's the best performance I've seen from Parker in a long time. Carol finally got rid of the "Colorado look of pain".

I read recently that Parker's father is ill - is it muscular distrophy? Too bad.

I read recently that Parker's father is ill - is it muscular distrophy? Too bad. What a shame. I've always loved his skating but you're right: Colorado wasn't a good fit for him. He really is a dancer.

Pennington's 61.58 score moves to third place behind Weir and Razzano.

Now for my least favorite skater...

anyone else's icenetwork freeze up?! glad I PAID for this...Not mine. I had problems earlier, but i was on wireless looking at Junior Nats reruns.

Hate to admit it but Abbott just nailed his program. Beautiful, clean jumps throughout, IIRC. (Don't quote me) Hated the cowboy footwork sequence, but it fit the music well. I refuse to watch the K&C antics though.

Well done - 87.85 (5 pt. PB) - takes the lead from Johnny Weir.

End of Group I - time for Group II warmup.

I made popcorn before IceNetwork came online. Finished it before the opening act was over, lol. Yum.

Rooting for Ryan Bradley in this group. Met him this summer at a camp - nice guy. The announcer just said he has a quad planned.

YAY!!!! RYAN BRADLEY DID AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love watching him skate he has so much pizazz and his long program is classical I like that one too, he performed that one at fire and ice two weeks ago and it was different for him.

Isk8NYC
01-15-2010, 10:41 PM
Bradley - 3rd place out of 7 - 70.63 Quad's worth a lotta points to overcome at least two blown jumps.

Jonathans program was horrible, he is not ready for anything big:frus::??

Isk8NYC
01-15-2010, 10:46 PM
Jonathan Cassar needs louder music - I didn't realize his program had started, so I missed the start.

GORGEOUS SPREADEAGLE SEQUENCE! Wow - it's like he's made of rubber.

Total score - 55.53 - 7th place / 8 skaters

A.H.Black
01-15-2010, 10:47 PM
I like Cassar's sense of dance.

I don't know about Ryan. 70 points is a lot, but it's 17 points behind the lead and only 6 points ahead of the next place. I think he will have to hope for mistakes from others in the free program to get on the team.

Isk8NYC
01-15-2010, 10:49 PM
Alexander Johnson - poor kid must have bats instead of butterflies. His jumps just aren't there tonight. First trip to the majors, I think?

MQSeries
01-15-2010, 10:50 PM
Did Jonathan run his hands down the back of his neck during his inside edge spread eagle? He hits gorgeous position in that move but he tends to do that same arm position too much.

A.H.Black

With apologies to Torvill and Dean, I just don't think Take 5 lends itself to figure skating. That 5/4 rhythm just throws things off.

Isk8NYC

Unfortunately, I resolved to cut down my Coca-Cola consumption, so I'm settling for tea. (It was a gift from a student - loose tea from India in a carved box. It's different and very nice.)

I have a pot a jasmine tea steeping on the stove, I just haven't had a frozen coke in a million years and I had a bad week.

Did the adult skating seminar with Cassar last June post baby. Nice guy and the quality of his skating was evident that he had a dance background. Wish the jumps were there.

Looove Rory. Nice debut by Keegan.

Isk8NYC
01-15-2010, 11:01 PM
Nice retro performance from Stephen Messing. Lovely spreadeagle, awesome spins - even a broken-leg sit spin! He obviously didn't get the memo that footwork is supposed to be slow and b-o-r-i-n-g because of the figure elements. (I'm mocking the commentators.)

Too bad about that blown 3L/3T combination jump - that was scary when his toe slipped on the 3T part. I'm amazed he stayed on his feet and skates everything else clean. Nicely done for a first timer.

ROFLOL - His coaches have matching hairdos. They look like bookends sitting on each side of him!
ETA: He's so cute - after each score was announced, he asked the coach to his right "Is that good?"

63.78 - 5th place

Isk8NYC
01-15-2010, 11:03 PM
Perfect costuming from Grant Hochstein - gorgeous blue pants and vest, skating to Sleeping Beauty.

Slipped on a Triple flip landing. Interesting lunge position with the outside of the boot on the ice.

Great flying sit spin. All his spins were awesome.

The K&C shoutouts are turning into award show speeches with all the "HI ()" litanies.

Mel On Ice
01-15-2010, 11:06 PM
with the exception of the botched landing on the 3f, I really liked Grant Hochstein! Apparently he trains about 3 minutes from my sister's house. I'd advise him, coming from the Detroit area, to resist skating in Honolulu Blue - hasn't worked for the Lions...

ITA with your entire post. I really liked Grant's outfit with the quilting and the little rhinestones. Flashy, yet subtle, very masculine.

Stephen Carriere, Skating Club of Boston
Shaun Rogers, SC of Wilmington Inc
Dennis Phan, All Year FSC
Daniel Raad, Park FSC
Richard Dornbush, All Year FSC
Evan Lysacek, DuPage FSC

Who do we like? I'm having a hard time choosing who I DON'T like.

Carriere, Rogers, Phan and Lysacek all get my vote.
I don't know Raad and Dornbush. Interesting they're both from All Year and I've never heard of them.

PFFTTTTHHHH! IN is back on, video and sound, so if you can't hear the announcer give the wrong year for this competition, close the viewing window and open a new one.

It's a few minutes ahead on the Universal Sports channel. (Not their online site)
If you don't have that channel on your cable/satellite, check your over-the-air broadcast. My converter box found it last week.

Daniel Raad - AHHHHH! I skated to this music (West Side Story) for two years, incl. ISI Nats. (J/K - I loved that program and music)

Nice outfit - bright red shirt and pants that look like blue jeans.

Sitting too far forward - he's missed two landings so far.

Laundry's done - tea is being sipped.

He just said he only does a good SP at Liberty, llol.

49.32 - 15th place. First trip to Nats...wait and see.

I've liked Dornbush since I saw him as a novice. I would like to see him have a great future.

Isk8NYC
01-16-2010, 12:17 AM
Dornbush - nailed the 3L/3T, fell on the triple axel. Nice spins - fast and tight. Great footwork and ending. Good for him, another newbie @ Nats.

4th/16 with 65.79 points - 1pt deduction for the fall.

Next up...Evan!

Isk8NYC
01-16-2010, 12:22 AM
Evan couldn't hold the landing on the triple axel. He hopped out of the landing, so that'll cost him. 3L/3T was nice. Still hate the arms akimbo on the footwork. I think it would be cool, but literally pointless, for a skater to do their footwork with their arms behind their back the whole time. Have I mentioned how much I like Frank Carroll?

Tech 44.23 Pgmm 39.46 (no deds) 83.69. Currently in 2nd place.

Group 3 done; moving on to group 4's warmup. Upcoming:

Warmup Group IV

One good thing about skating these days. We used to see bad spin after lousy spin after awful spin. We used to make excuses for them as though they weren't important.

I don't think we've seen a truly lousy spin all night. Some of these guys are getting amazing speed and force and the sit spin positions are truly sit spins.

Know what else helped, imo? There was an IJS revision that gives them more points for holding spins in a single position longer. That's why some of the spins were just phenomenal - the skaters didn't have to race to the next Gumby pose.

I thought solidly into 3rd, not sure I agree with 2nd for Evan. Pts are very close.

Looks like someone picked up Evan's bullfighter costume at a used costume sale!

Armin name is so fun to say!

Having a late night snack while watching the warmup. I found the key, I have to watch it in the smallest window possible and it won't crash. Not happy with that, but I may risk a bigger window with the last group.

I just ate oreos with my tea.

Go Mroz!

Bah - too bad he singled the 3Axel plus hand down on the prior jump. He wasn't as "dancey" as I would have liked. His sit spins were definitely slow.
That's all right, I'm still rooting for him.

FSU'ers are advising a log out, clear cache, and sign back in. I signed out and in and haven't had a problem. (Too lazy to clear cache.)

Armin Mahbanoozadeh - my oldest DD used to have a Speedo or Tyr racing suit in exactly that color and style. Well, with racerback straps instead of sleeves.
Clean performance, very nicely done. Loved the snake-like spin combination. He's skating with an injury - he bruised his hip last week and has been receiving medical treatment on site.

Man, what an ending - the look of concentration on his face was incredible. Talk about furrowed brows...
Great spins, I think all the jumps were clean unless I missed something while closing the oreo package.

Awww...one of his coaches just told him that "that was one of your greatest perf's ever. Total package." Sweet.

Adam Rippon. A WALLEY into a 3flip/3toe combination. COOOLLLL!! Awww...he doubled a 3L (with both hands over his head - awesome to watch) because he was too close to the wall. He actually had to stop himself with his hands from running into it, then he skated off seemingly okay, just to take a spill a few steps later - just rolled off the heel. Too bad - it was a very nice program, quite balletic. I didn't know Brian Orser was his coach. He looks really good.

Score: 72.91
Place: 4th place.

How does that work with a wall crash and a fall? I guess the spins overcame the blown 3L and the fall didn't hurt as much since it wasn't on a jump or spin. (He got the 1.0 deduction, but there weren't any element points to lose.)

Jason Wong

WOW - what a 3Axel! High, blurringly tight and fast. Too bad about the first combination jump - he threed the landing of the first jump, but he tried the second and succeeded.

He doesn't know what to do with his arms, esp. on jump entrances. First spin bobble of the night. I thought he was having a bit of temper, but he was pleased and acting out. It's 11pm in Spokane, pretty late.

One more skater after Jason's scores. good - I have to get up for skating tomorrow am.

Score: 64.56

Isk8NYC

Tommy Steenberg's struggling with jumps. He may have 2fted the 3Axel, definitely 3'ed the landing of the 3L in the 3Lutz/3Loop combination and just plopped down on the 3flip I think.

Like the Mets Blue color, not the blouse fabric though.

Freeskate finish so far:
1. Bradley
2. Evan
3.
4. Weir

Only Abbott is left to skate.
Might Bradley make the O team?

Final Standings:

1. Jeremy Abbott
2. Evan Lysacheck
3. Johnny Weir
4. Ryan Bradley

I think the olympic committee should send Ryan instead of Johnny because Ryan is solid and Johnny still hasn't proven that he can skate a clean long program. I dont think they will listen to me but I wanna cry for Ryan because his long was so good and I think at the olympics he could really bring something.

Yes, I was a poor sport - could you all hear me yelling "FALL FALL FALL" during Weir's freeskate? Shame on me, but I really wanted Bradley to make the team!!! Met him once, in Colorado Springs, and he just stole my heart (don't tell my husband that!) by how graciously and understated he presented himself. He was really awesome with the synchro skaters there too!

That was the best men's event at Nationals in a looooooong time!

Jeremy out skated Evan. Evan decided today that he was going to try the quad in his free program. Well he attempted it and it was under rotated and he fell on it. Jeremy landed the quad and skated a completely clean skate.

As much as I would prefer to see Ryan over Johnny at the Olympics, Ryan generally cannot put two clean programs together - it's all about the triple axel. Johnny also has a varied track record, sometimes he puts two clean programs, sometimes he just gives up. So I see it as pretty much a toss-up between the two. Since Johnny bested Ryan overall, and neither has a really stellar track record, then I think in fairness Johnny should be named.

I hope Ryan is though.

I'd send Bradley before Weir as Bradley landed 3 quads (two in combo) while Weir landed two 3axels, one in combo, for the whole competition.

That's my argument, and I'm sticking with it, LOL!

I finally saw both Evan and Abott's performances on utube. I liked the changes to Schez that Lori had done. Maybe Evan should just forget about the quad for the Olympic since he hadn't try it the whole season. Just stick with what he does best. The new grey outfit looked hideous on utube; It looked better on photos, but I'm still not a fan of it. He should stay with the first outfit but remove the sheer panels.

I agree that Abott's skating today was way ahead everyone's. Good job.

I'm not really worried about Evan - all he had to do was make the Olympic team tonight and he did. It feels like a rerun of last year when he came in third at Nats but nailed everything at Worlds. I think putting the quad in was a risk that he needed to take now, rather than at the Olympics. He can definitely do the quad - we saw it on the warmup and it was perfect. He needs to either keep it in/perfect it or keep it out between now and next month.

I haven't liked Jeremy Abbott since he made an ### out of himself on television in the Kiss & Cry last year. He came across as an immature, stupid idiot that I wouldn't want representing us on the world stage. His coaching change has turned him from an out-of-control frat boy into a determined competitor, so I don't dislike him as much anymore. His program was awesome and skated cleanly. I just hope he didn't 'peak' at Nats and has the momentum to skate well at the Olympics.

Johnny Weir - I think he lets his persona keep him from being the talented, strong athlete that he could become. I didn't really enjoy his long program - those red stripes on his costume look like ribs and I kept getting distracted. I hope he can find his focus to skate well at the Olympics. It seems like I haven't seen him skate both the SP and LP well in the same competition in years. Forget the cameras and the damn fox fur and what you wore - worry about your programs, Johnny! Grrr.

I met Ryan Bradley this summer and thought he was a nice guy. He was friendly and kind to my low-level skaters. However, that long program has made me a fan. I laughed and enjoyed every minute - my husband came in to see what I was watching. What a talented performer and very composed in the AT&T Lounge.

I'm glad there were three slots for the US Men on the Olympic team, but I really hope to see Ryan Bradley skate that program again. Ryan's been named as an alternate and, while I wouldn't wish injury or accident on anyone, if any of them are caught doing something wrong, send in Ryan! I'll be his fan (along with Ms. Numbers and now Schmeck!)

We need more humor and entertainment in this world.

Liked the quilted jacket. Didn't like the chiffon sleeves; though I understand he needs to be able to move. Nice scores.

Rory Flack Burkhart's hair reminds me of a mannequin for some reason. It just looks a little bit unreal.

My brief thoughts after the mens's long today. I was in the arena and it was AWESOME!!!!

Ryan Bradley's program was hilarious and wonderful just as you saw on TV - at the end he just stood there and got applause from all sides (oh did I mention the amazing standing ovation?) - and just kind of soaked it in. He really did not want to leave the ice. the sweepers were doing their thing, picking up all of the stuffed animals - and then he picked one up and was trying to hand it to the nearest sweeper - but instead, he got down on one knee, bowed to her and handed her the toy. It was hilarious and totally totally sweet. He was just trying to savor the moment and it was beautiful.

Evan fell on his quad, messed up the landings of both jumps in a triple axel-double-toe combination and doubled a triple loop. He skates very fast and is in command on the ice, but this program just did not make it. I am not a big fan of his skating (too much flailing and ugly jump landings) but I understand why people like him, but tonight he was kind of tight.

This left room for Johnny to move up. He skated beautifully, popped on triple axel into a slightly wacky single. He skates slowly, elegantly, with absolutely beautiful jump landings. Evan had more content despite his errors. Of course I haven't seen the protocol sheets yet so I have no idea how the exact placements went. I felt like he had his opporutunity but he didn't quite seize it although his skating was definitely pleasant and secure for the most part. He is a very inward-looking skater and he draws you in with him as he skates - we're left wondering what is next for us to enjoy and I like that about his skating.

Jeremy Abbot was completely on fire through his entire program from the very first note. The opening quad was huge and perfect and every element following was just totally spot-on. It felt like the whole crowd was skating the program along with him just wishing for a clean skate at every move. You knew that a mishap might be a real problem but as far as I remember there really was nothing. He did a triple-triple combination, brilliant spins and footwork and was totally open to the audience. There was at least one triple-double-double -- again seemingly perfectly executed.

The audience was on its feet and screaming before he even went into his final spin. Amazing!!! I don't know when I have felt this before - the National Champion skating a perfect skate to re-claim his title.

Wow.

If it could only always be like this.

I am really proud of Ryan bradley because he brings something more then just jumps to the ice, when he skates he thinks about the audiance and not the jumps or the points, I just wish there was more room in the point system to give him more credit for it.

Did anyone catch the 10 yr old boy who won Novice Men's SP last night? WOW. Def catch him on Ice Network if you can (he skated last). I can't believe someone so little can do such massive jumps. And he was just so ridiculously cute.

I watched novice men SP since one of the skaters from my club was competing, and I was really impressed by some of the skaters who were able to put out a technically strong program that was also very entertaining. It was great to see some "themed" programs (Karate, Justin Timberlake music, Super Mario, etc) that incorporated the entire package of music, costume, choreography, etc. That's something that really got lost with implementation of IJS, particularly at the lower levels where these kids are so focused on the technical aspect of the sport. Glad to see we're finally getting past that, and maybe we have some more Ryan Bradleys coming up through the rankings. I don't normally watch the lower levels but some of these kids were so fun to watch that I want to catch the free skate tonight.
