There's a sweet article in the December 2009 issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine. (Page 236)

I can't find a copy online to link, but if you have access to a copy of the magazine, check it out.

A man and his family moved in next door to another family in Des Moines, Iowa. The other family had a tradition of setting up an outdoor ice rink in their large backyard. All the kids from the neighborhood would come and skate.

The man in the article helped the other family for a couple of years and his kids joined the fun on the ice.

One spring, the two men took down the rink together. The next morning, the man found all the boards in his yard along with 50+ pairs of skates. The neighbor had decided to pass the torch to the man in the article.

Every year, the man and his two sons put together the rink in their yard and make ice as soon as the weather gets cold enough. It's open to anyone, but they have private ice on Christmas morning for an hour or two. (Only rule: Kids have to wear a helmet.)

Very sweet story that emphasizes building lasting memories. Check it out if you get a chance.
