How did we get to saying Short Program and Long Program?

Say, we know what they mean. But from the beginning of time, does anyone know a history on how we got to calling the different parts of Skating a Short Program and Free Skate? As I don't think they called it that back in the 1800s..right?

Wikipedia has a brief history of how the Short program came into being, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Short_program_(figure_skating). Basically when it was added it was the shorter of the two freeskate programs that made up competition once Compulsory figures were dropped, thus its the short.
