Odorless and underreported danger:

One good link (ESPN): http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/e60/news/story?id=4068448

A hockey forum with some info and a discussion of multiple incidents http://www.network54.com/Forum/611706/thread/1257659578/last-1258169659/Carbon+Monoxide+Poisoning

1. Be aware of the physical symptoms - the poison can be colorless and odorless.

2. Push for electric ice resurfacers at your rink - in the long run it may be the cheaper than the liability associated with combustion exhausts. Potential problem eliminated.

3. Ensure your combustion engine machine is properly tuned and maintained. Don't let them idle longer than necessary.

4. Readily available air quality meter readings at rinks.

to add to the list above:

5. Bring fresh air into air circulation system.

6. Ensure air circulation system is working properly.

7. RAISE THE ISSUE WITH RINK MANAGMENT

Also, I just googled the issue and found incidents all over the place... it doesn't seem to jump out as a big problem, but if you start digging and adding it up, it is not uncommon.

THERE REALLY SHOULD BE ONE PLACE TRACKING ALL THESE TYPES OF INCIDENTS, A SINGLE SOURCE FOR INFORMATION.

CO poisoning is a very real danger! We had several scares at our rink last year, only to find out there were no CO detectors installed in the actual rink, only in the zamboni room. The skating director and several of the staff had been ill for days before the alarm actually sounded. After that scare, monitors were finally installed. CO poisoning can also happen in the home, which is even deadlier, as many have died in their sleep. We had a bird fly down our chimney and it got stuck in the flue where it died, blocking the exhaust to our forced-oil furnace. Our monitor kept going off and we finally re-checked (after reading the book, duh) and realized that it was CO. We opened up the house and called the oil company (we thought it had improper air flow, and it did, of a sorts). We finally got it resolved, thanks to a $55 CO monitor! Note: it signaled CO long before we had any noticeable symptoms!!!
