Outdoor ice skating rink coming to Raleigh

November 10, 2:33 PM

You may not find a lot of frozen ponds in Raleigh, but that won’t stop one company from bringing outdoor skating to the City of Oaks.

Warté Designs, a local events design and interior design company, is bringing “Raleigh On Ice” to three area malls – Brier Creek, North Hills, and Triangle Town Center.

The outdoor rink is a travelling attraction that has appeared in big cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. This is its first time in Raleigh.

“We’re hoping this will become a holiday tradition in the Raleigh area,” said Carla Williams of the J Daniels Group, which is helping to promote the event.

Although warm weather can pop up in Raleigh throughout the holiday season – it was almost 80 degrees on Monday – that should not be a problem: the rink uses synthetic ice.

“Unless you’re technologically savvy, you won’t be able to tell the difference,” Williams said.

The skating will not be expensive – $5 for kids and $7 for adults, including skate rental – and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Raleigh Rescue Mission. A food, coat, and blanket drive will also be held as a part of this event.

“We are excited that we can use a fun and family-friendly event like outdoor ice skating to raise awareness about and benefit families and children in need,” said Warté Designs Owner, Warté Moore.

Also, Carolina Hurricanes – including Stormy, the mascot – will attend the first day of each event (Nov. 14 for Brier Creek, Nov. 29 for North Hills and Dec. 13 for Triangle Town Center.) Among the activities on those days will be clinics from Hurricanes’ players and a slapshot booth.

Locations and dates are as follows:

• Brier Creek Commons Shopping Center: Brier Creek: Nov. 14 - Dec. 10
• North Hills: Nov. 21 – Jan. 3
• Triangle Town Center: Dec. 13 – Dec. 26.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Note: The article says it's artificial ice.

“Unless you’re technologically savvy, you won’t be able to tell the difference,” Williams said.Hmm, I doubt syntehtic ice is that good and I hate to think what it does to blades!

We're just getting London's outdoor rinks opening for the winter season. I'll make a specific post about that soon.

I'm not interested in synthetic ice after hearing from S@D about what it does to blades. Blades aren't cheap.
I hear that some of the newer synthetics are easier on your blades but I have no experience with them. One of our up-state rinks uses a better synthetic so I'm told by one one of the girls at my rink who has skated on it. She said the gliding was so much better it WAS hard to tell you were on synthetic! I wanted to go check it out, but the people running it were very hard to get hold of so I gave up.

Once or twice will not ruin your blades, but if you are like me and doing shows where you are on it for weeks, then get cheap blades for substituting. Some of the girls even got cheap boots off eBay just for the summer shows and slapped some cheap blades on them.

----------------------

Please do check with each rink before turning up as sessions may be subject to change or sold-out. All rinks offer family tickets and some rinks offer lessons and ice guides.

There's a huge difference in rink sizes and I hope to add more information in due course.

Prices range from a minimum session cost of £8.00 to a maximum session cost of £15.75 but when you look at the hourly cost the range is even wider from £3.20 to £25.00. Serious skaters might want to avoid the very expensive rinks and leave them to the muggles :)
