Is she going to be competitive at Nationals? Will she even skate at Nationals?

I don't think it's fair for her to get a bye to Nats, given that she hasn't competed this season. The GP's would have excused her, but since she didn't do them, I don't understand why she still gets to go straight to Nationals w/ no qualifying competitions.

I agree but I think that Silver at the '06 Olympics pretty much guarantees her to try at Nationals. I will be surprised if she skates in Spokane and REALLY surprised if she makes the national team (not that I'm cynical or anything...)

Because the wording of the bye is any reigning olympic medalist. Which she is. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with how they have done since then.

I agree with icedancer2. I didn't think she would really do Skate America, and I don't think she'll show up for Nationals, either.

Yeah, I don't think she will either. But I do agree that according to the rules she's entitled to. It's not like she would take someone else's spot

Anyone thing that Sasha is doing exactly the same thing as Michelle back in 2006 when she said she was coming back but didn't show up for anything including Nationals?
I don't think Sasha's coming back, guys!!! Makes no sense!

I don't think it's the same thing as Kwan. Just mho.
I feel like Cohen's manager wanted her to get more exposure and this was a way to keep her name on people's lips. (Hence this thread) They may have both underestimated the effort needed to "get back in the game" or she could be pacing herself for Nationals and the Olympics. Either way, "losing" wasn't planned for this season.
She still has to skate well at Nationals to make the Olympic team, which is a blessing in disguise.

Heck, even if she WINS nationals it's a risky move to put her on the Oly team. USFS has no idea what international judges think of her now (PCS placements), how they will mark her URs (they hit some skaters harder than others), and with only one competition, they have no idea what kind of consistency she is hitting.
Unless they have been monitoring her all year naming Sasha to the team would be insane.

I believe the rules are that if a skater wins Nationals, then they automatically make the Oly team. The second (and if applicable, third) place skater is not an automatic placement.
Kwan was in a similar situation, but I don't remember her taking off a few years from national or international competition before that year, as Cohen has.

I thought they changed the rules to give them a bit more leway.
This document: http://usfsa.org/content/events/200910/olympics/2010%20WOG%20FSK%20Athlete%20Selection%20Procedure s%20web.pdf seems to support that. It says that placement at (list of events, nationals being the first) will be taken into consideration.
(This is an older document, that seems to say only nationals is considered: http://www.usfsa.org/content/olympicprocedures.pdf)
I think the Kwan situation was different. She had been injured that season, but hadn't had any time off otherwise. Cohen has been out of the game for a LONG time.

Thanks! I didn't know about that rule.

I would bet that they still name whomever is #1 to the Olympic team- even if it's Bebe, who is known to falter - but it's good to know they at least CONSIDER that it might not be the best choice.
