at a competition this weekend, which was the most competitive I have EVER seen yet, wow. She kind of got killed in pre pre FS getting 8th out of 9, but had a personal best skate. This group was DEEP, wow!

But like I said, the next day, she did preliminary compulsory spins and won in a landslide of all firsts (5 judges) even though she was clearly youngest (and the competitors were all good spinners).

Wow, congrats! It's really nice when they pull thru like that!

My daughter entered a comp and although spinning is her #1 best thing, she did poorly (she couldn't hold her camel) so she really tanked the spin event but pulled it up on the jumps and even landed her flip (she was having confidence issues with that).

Once you start competing the tested levels, yes, it gets very deeply competitive - kids in pre-pre are doing axels, etc. There's incredible sandbagging at all the levels, IMO. That's why I like the new restricted comp levels - someone new to the level can compete with others in the same situation, and then can compete in nonrestricted when they are ready.

Congratulations to your daughter on her spinning medal!

I agree there was clearly at least some sandbagging going on. My dd has her axels too, but she is new to them. She took it for what it was, and her coaches keep telling her that challenging herself will pay off later (like in Juvenile) and to just keep going for HER personal best.

I have to say that the spins was the most confidence I have ever seen in her in a competition skate- I am hoping that will leak over into her music program at some point too.

Congrats on the spin win! It's a big step between no test and pre-pre. I'm sure her FS program will get stronger and more confident as the season goes on.

Probably so, she didn't do her best axels either as she was nervous- I have seen better in practice. She doesn't have the pizazz or drama of some of the older and more experienced kids. She is taking dancing lessons (ballet and lyrical) this year, so maybe that will help too.

It might help if she dances a bit on her own at home, maybe in front of you & the family (sort of like a mini-show). My daughter used to do this with her vocal pieces and it helped her relax more when it came time for her performances. Practice does make more perfect!

Congratulations! I always enjoy watching the compulsories and DD tries to enter them whenever she competes. Good luck on the FS!

Her coach and I keep trying to convince her that she is a VERY good skater- she consistently medals in compulsories so clearly she CAN do very good elements. Somehow when it comes to the music program, she loses her confidence.

Achieving her personal best is what it's all about. So kudos for her. Hopefully, your DD's confidence will increase with experience. My DD tells me she's confident and that she doesn't get nervous, but in the last few competitions she has taken some silly falls or trips. I'm beginning to think that her nerves have finally caught up to her.

Does your DD ever skate public? Mine would do interp during the publics and it seemed to boost her confidence in regards to performing in front of others. Of course, elements are limited but she performs nonetheless and gets some crazy looks, too.

I think it all falls back to experience, though. Good luck!

Hi momof3chicks

Congrats to your DD for winning the compulsory spins.

What are the 5 spin elements that she is required to do?

Congratulations on winning a spins event. Those can be VERY tough!

The confidence issue is something she has to learn on her own - no amount of telling will do. My secondary coach has me skate my program for the parents in the stands. He keeps telling me that I NEED to WANT them to watch and show off for the two or three or whatever people up there and if I DON'T know them, even better! I should want them to watch because I am good.
I figured out something this week....He's right...:halo:

For this competitions (it seems to change) it was camel, sit, forward scratch to back scratch
