As I was watching a recap of the markets' tumble yesterday, I was surprised to hear that Elvis was going to be the next interview...so I watched...ROBTV is Report on Business TV, the Canadian equivalent of CNBC, owned by the Globe and Mail.

A more relaxed Elvis was in evidence, discussing his fall tour. Says he'd like to try LeMans endurance racing, maybe even the 24 hour variety.

Most striking was his comment that he would not put a child of his own into the sport, competitively, but he'd like the child skate. Judging by the low numbers in our local rinks, especially in a post-Olympic year when the numbers traditionally boom, many parents have already come to that conclusion.;)

Quite a coincidence, both the markets and the amateur ranks started to tumble around the same time...

I am really surprised to discover that another fsfan watches ROBTV! I'm a financial planner so it is my favourite station - missed Elvis though. Do you watch "The Close" with Janis Mackey Frayer? I think she looks so much like Shae Lynn Bourne.

Elvis is everywhere lately. It was just announced that he will be one of the sports legends honouring Ali at an upcoming Argos game in Toronto.

He seems to be enjoying a busy post-competitive life, good for him.

Hi Picton,

I love Janis! She's always so cheerful and does look like Shae Lynn come to think of it....I try to watch The Close...I wish I could watch Lunch Money at noon too.

I wonder how much SHE has in the markets.

Most striking was his comment that he would not put a child of his own into the sport, competitively, but he'd like the child skate. Did Elvis say why he wouldn't have his child compete? That would be the interesting part to me.

This is a direct quote from a recent Toronto Star article entitled "Elvis would bar his children from skating":

"Developing in those teen years, being out in the open like that — that sucks. Sorry, it just does. I'd rather have my child be able to measure themselves based on what they can do and judge them that way, rather than based on someone else's opinion."

Sounds fair to me - it's his opinion. And he's certainly been there, so I'd say he's entitled to it :D I'm not sure that I neccesarily agree, but that's my opinion.

I wonder what Elvis' parents think now, whether they would put him in it, etc. I guess Elvis truly knows how much work is involved and the sacrifices that you have to make for the sport. Elizabeth Manley's mother said she wouldn't do it again. I guess there is a downside to being famous like Elvis. Even to get friends would be difficult. He might not know if they were liking him for him or for the fact he was ELVIS. Anyway, it would be annoying.

"Developing in those teen years, being out in the open like that — that sucks. Sorry, it just does. I'd rather have my child be able to measure themselves based on what they can do and judge them that way, rather than based on someone else's opinion." Love his language. This actually says alot about how Elvis perceived his own situation. It sounds like he didn't enjoy his teen years very much. It seems to me that no matter what you choose to pursue in life you're always being judged by others. It's learning how to best deal with this which I feel is a good learning experince for many kids. I agree that there are some for whom this wouldn't be a positive experience. It really depends on the kid and requires an astute parent to tell if any activity is good for their child.
