While I know this should go in the "on ice" section, I thought it was intriguing enough for a discussion. Just as baseball has a "Fantasy Training Camp," Dorothy Hamill is headlining a "Fantasy Figure Skating Camp" for ADULTS sponsored by Rainbo Sports and SkatingCircle.

Join Dorothy and enjoy five days of hands-on training and instruction from world-renowned coaches and celebrity skaters on the charming island of Nantucket. Peter Carruthers, Randy Gardner, and other special guests will join Dorothy in the training and demonstration of skating technique, skills - jumps, spins, and edges, choreography, as well as off-ice discussions on topics such as health and fitness, costuming and make-up, body movement, music selection, and an inside look into skating. All the while relax and experience the magic of Nantucket with charming accommodations, gourmet meals, and a variety of optional leisure activities. Whether you are a seasoned skater or it's your first time on the ice you will have the experience of a lifetime! This camp is limited to adults 21 years of age and up.

Dates: September 20th - 25th, 2009

I also recieved this email. Looks great, but seems expensive. What do skating camps normally run?

It sounds absolutely amazing. I know the price includes literally everything (meals, ice, coaching, etc.) but it is a bit steep, especially since you have to add airfare. I was thinking about it last night and this is actually about $800-1000 (usd) more than my 8 day trip to Italy which included airfare, two meals per day, guided tours and entrance fees, hotel, and transportation to multiple cities. I just can't justify spending $4,500 in this economy for only 5 days. I don't know what other camps run exactly, but this price seems more equivalent to two weeks of some camps than 5 days (even camps with lodging).

That being said I absolutely would want to go if it was less expensive. It sounds like the chance of a lifetime!!!!!

I said this to a friend- but I think this is more of a luxury vacation and a chance to soak up the famous than a skating camp. The amount of ice time isn't advertised anywhere! That's a big question mark to me.

I guess I'm a little bit offended by the term "fantasy" camp- but I'm also not the target audience for this anyway. I want a training camp, not a fantasy. Even if the "greats" were to teach me skating, it would be to better my skating, not to pretend to be an Olympian.

The video here (http://www.dorothyhamill.com/index.htm) says "a minimum of four hours per day" on the ice. What that ends up meaning, I have no idea. I think that if the on-ice classes are good, meaning actual training time with tips and techniques, it would be good. I'm not so sure about the "spend time at night with me and my friends" type stuff. That part sounds more like soaking up the Olympian part than actual training, though you do need a break at some point from training. But again, that just makes the price seem a bit too high.

Thanks- I didn't watch the video, just read the email and page on that site about the camp. It seems like # of classes a week would be something they need to make more clear.

I do hope if anyone goes they report back- because it is sure to be pretty incredible.

I think you're right -- they're targeting the fantasy skaters moreso than the training camp prospects. The website says it's open to beginners.

I thought it seemed a little high-priced, but I wasn't sure.
