Is there a difference between the two? The rink I skate at uses ISI but another rink that I know of uses USFSA. If there is a difference, could somebody tell me what it is?
Thanks,
Becky

Hi Becky. If you go to the "On Ice-Skaters" thread you'll find a 'sticky note' at the top of the forum. Info for skaters & coaches (http://www.skatingforums.com/showthread.php?t=21693)

It's pretty comprehensive--there are testing forms, videos, information about basic skills levels, and more for both ISI and USFS. Essentially, ISI is geared more towards those who are doing it just for fun--although there are competitions--whereas USFS is designed to go all the way up to elite and international competition (and hooks in with the ISU, the sport's international governing body).

Both USFS and ISI have basic skills levels and a testing structure, but these are different. USFS is a bit more expensive (for both membership and usually competitions), and once you reach a certain level, tests are more formalized (with judges, and you pay extra fees). ISI testing is typically much more informal--you can do it with your coach during a lesson, except for the highest test levels.

I have done both, but I haven't done a USFS competition because (1) a lot of competitions don't have my level (low adult!) and (2) they've been more expensive than ISI comps. The ISI comps I've done have been in conjunction with the synchro teams I skate with.

The organizations do try to work together to have some similar testing schemes and similar program lengths and such, so it's not that difficult to compete in both organizations.

Thank you LilJen,

Sorry I did not look for a sticky note before I posted a question. I know that can add up to unwanted threads.

Well, the sticky note has a LOT of information. It's helpful to have it condensed and distilled. Someone else might have some other useful ISI vs USFS info, too--I haven't been in either for long enough to give you a really comprehensive viewpoint, just my limited experience. Have fun with whichever program--or both!
