Not that the broadcast has started yet, but I figured I might as well start at least ONE thread for this competition, lol. I've been busy with work, coaching, and a sickly child. Plus, I'm one of the "Renew Kyle XY" campaigners, so that takes away my free time.

Thanks to all who started chat threads for the other events, you are more than welcome to do that whenever - just add the spoiler stuff, okay?

I read an article that Johnny Weir had a meltdown on ice (no further information). Since I don't have TV or icenetwork I don't know what that means. Has he skated or was the info wrong? (It was a male sportswriter source--not phillip hersh who knows his stuff--so for all I know he was looking at old footage. apparently NBC's been screwing stuff up.)

No, he is correct. He popped a couple jumps, fell on a flip (I believe) and generally did not skate well at all.

I just watched and I didn't see Johnny Weir have an "on-ice meltdown" at all compared to previous years. He blew a few jumps but recovered better than I've ever seen him do before and finished the program without quitting, but lost some of his verve in performing it. He was unhappy with himself and it showed when he took his bows. He was crying in the kiss-and-cry, but hey, that's what it's there for. He didn't rant or snarl as he did when Peter Carruthers spoke to him after a bad skate a few years ago. I give him credit for much improved self-control. They said he's been sick for several weeks and lost weight due to a stomach virus that required hospitalization. Give him credit for not wimping out.

Tresk8sAZ: Just saw your remark. I guess "meltdowns" are relative, lol. He didn't skate that bad.

I wish Lysacek had skated better - I love the programs and most of all GETTING HIM OUT OF THE PUFFY SHIRT COSTUME! It just seemed like an "off" skate. Too bad he put in the quad (hands down mistake), but he had no choice after Mroz skated and landed his quad cleanly. I liked the way he "loosened up" after the danger had passed and I like the footwork so much more.

Parker Pennington didn't do as well as I hoped either. I was rooting for him after seeing that wonderful short program. Seemed like he was behind or ahead of the music at many points. Will someone please do something about his hair, though? It looks like it belongs to the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. Explain to me how someone with vertigo can do what he does on the ice, though?

Ryan Bradley -- what a showman! I know those jumps weren't great and they cost him a placement, but he's one of the most enjoyable skaters to watch. (Numbers - any comments? Hmmmm) Is he sticking around for 2010?

Mroz is awesome! Enjoyable to watch, and WOW! is that quad jump huge and clean! He's going to be a real force for the others to contend with over the next year.

I wasn't impressed with the LP from our new men's champion, Jeremy Abbott. I didn't like the costume or the program - who choreographed it? It looks like what we saw from Evan and Johnny a while back - all flailing arms and quarter-inch edging. His short program was much better.

What was with the hand signals in the kiss-and-cry? The first time, it was annoying. The second time it was stupid, especially miming putting a gun to his head and pulling the trigger then later "shooting" at the camera!

This is who we should send to the Worlds as a US representative? Someone should do him a favor and tell him his antics made him look like an ***hole.

As for Johnny, I think they were probably referring more to his popped jumps and such as his "meltdown" rather than crying etc. He definitely did hold himself in check the best I've seen him do, especially doing more tirples after the first couple of issues. He didn't skate that bad compared to the lower men, but no where near what he's capable of.

Evan got zero points on the quad because of the fall. If he wouldn't have put it in at all, he likely would have gotten just as many points because he wouldn't have had the negative GOEs, the deduction for the fall, etc. I think it was a bad idea and don't know that he actually had to do it, other than he wanted the edge on Abbott (which appears to be why they put it in in the first place).

And I absolutely agree about Abbott - What's with yelling "I love king-fu" in a weird voice and the ridiculous amount of hand signals? I was annoyed he did it after the short, and his coach should have talked to him and told him not to do it again.

If I didn't know he had to take a drug test after the skate, I would have thought Abbott was high. I'm sure someone, somewhere thought it was funny that he made a fool of himself on national TV. Hope someone with sense tells him they lied.

OT: I was trying to figure out what all the little rubber balls were that kept being thrown on the ice after the skate.

My ten-year old figured out after two commercial breaks that they were strawberries because Smucker's was a sponsor.

The mod on IceNetwork's forum initially reported that they were "They were tiny stuffed tomatoes, FYI. " S/he later corrected the mistake, lol.

Also OT: I thought the schedule published in Skating magazine said IceNetwork was going to broadcast the "Spectacular" tonight and NBC will show it in two weeks. Now the mod on IceNetwork says no, there will only be an NBC broadcast. After the tomato/strawberry mistake, I don't know if I should believe that information, so I'm hanging out on icenetwork to see what happens. lol

Interesting...

2009 World Championships
Jeremy Abbott
Evan Lysacek
Brandon Mroz
Alternate 1 – Johnny Weir
Alternate 2 – Ryan Bradley
Alternate 3 – Stephen Carriere

There were rumors on FSU that Mroz might get sent to Junior Worlds instead.
I'm glad he got the call to the big game.

I also hope they give Jeremy Abbott a talking-to (as my late mother would say) about his performance in the kiss-and-cry.

Evan landed a gorgeous 4t-3t during the 5 minutes warm-up. It was quite a suprised when his went down on it during the actual performance. A large portion of the music arrangement seemed like it was changed since the program debut at SA, and I didn't think all the arrangement gelled. His footwork looked slow from what we ususally expect from an Evan's footwork. I agree that getting rid of the puffy top was a huge improvement.

Brandon Mroz's program was really all jumps. His inbetween stuffs were unconvincingly performed.

Ryan Bradley -his program seemed like it had too many places for him to stop skating in order to give a come-hither look at the judges/audiences and wiggled his hips. Not that he wasn't sexy doing them, LOL, but I felt all those stops really disrupted the flow of his program. The jumps were fun to watch though. I've always felt that the choreography for Ryan's programs haven't allow him to display his best skating skills. They allowed him to display his best hamming skill but not his skating skills.

LOL, I had the same thought when I saw his hair. Next time he get a haircut please ask for short on the side, short on the back and leave some length on top.

Me either. I've said in the past that I thought his skating can be retentious. Abbott has great lines, gorgeous edges, very good spins but his skating too often has the look of: Look at me, I'm an a.r.t.i.s.t.

Abbott was trying to make time pass by while waiting for the score, but he came off looking stupid. I was like an unfunny joke that went on too long. Maybe he'll learn from it after watching the broadcast at home.

Brandon Mroz has the fugliest costume in tonight broadcast. What's with all the flowy frabric and noisy red and white swirly patterns?

Maybe he'll learn from it after watching the broadcast at home.Yeah, but he did it after the SP too. Someone should have said "knock it off" but this was over-the-top. My little one said "That was BAD!" when he pretended to shot himself in the head.

One last coteur note: Evan (also not jailbait) looked really sexy in that tuxedo. At one point I thought of "Mr. Debonair." lol

I think Ryan Bradley looks a little like a young Alec Baldwin. So the whole time he was skating his long program, I was for some reason thinking of Baldwin's Donaghy character from 30 Rock.:lol:

Didn't like Evan's "tuxahdo". Actually didn't like anyone's costume except maybe Bradley's.

What did Abbott do that was so offensive? He's a guy that suddenly popped onto everyone's radar, became an overnight favorite and was letting off some steam. I've seen baseball players do dumber things.

Yes, they were strawberries. I kept mine instead of throwing it on the ice.

Wish I knew what to say about Weir. He didn't deliver, and the door was popped open for four other guys to stream by. This is the SPORT part of figure skating.

I think I overheard someone near the K&C or somewhere else near the mikes saying they thought he was quoting lines from Kung Fu Panda. I haven't seen that movie, so I don't know.

The strawberries--those poor sweepers probably had their work cut out for them. The berries were so lightweight they really flew through the air, and then bounced. At least they were red and very visible on the ice.
