Welcome to the board!
Standard questions:
Where do you live? (Area, not address - like New York City or London)
Do you usually wear narrow, regular or wide width shoes?
Does your rink have a pro shop that sells skates?
If you're an adult, don't cheap out on skates. It's the only major piece of equipment you HAVE to buy and having good skates adds to the enjoyment. Expect to pay $100
Many people buy a cheaper skate then have to better-quality new skates. It's cheaper to buy what you really need from the start, rather than a starter pair on top of the needed skates.
You're looking for:
. blades attached with screws, not rivets.
. skate upper that doesn't bend easily.
. good fit for your foot.
Beginner Skates Brands/Models:
Normal/Wide Foot? Jackson Marquis, or Mystique or Artiste; some people recommend the Softecs as well.
Narrow/Normal Foot? Riedell Blue Ribbon or Bronze Medallion
I don't care for the CCM beginner skates as an instructor. I don't think they provide enough support, especially for an adult.
Good luck. Your best place to start looking for skates is your local pro shop where they can measure your feet and tell you the size for each brand. (Yes, they are sized differently and they're usually smaller than your street shoe.)
Whatever you do, get the blades sharpened when you buy new skates.
The "factory sharpening" only lasts a short time and is usually not sharp enough.
