View Full Version : Finding a Skating Partner
Does anyone know how I could go about finding a ice dance partner?
I've skated freeskate for many years, but had to stop because of injuries that don't allow me to jump. Recently I've started doing more and more ice dance and was looking at possibly getting back into the competitive stream.
Any help would be awesome!

there are 2 very good partner websites that are as follows
www.icepartnersearch.com and this is endoesed by USFSA
then there is www.ice-dance.com/ps
this is strictly dance partners but both have a wide variety of age, location and skating abilities in their ranks
thanks :)
apparently i have to put in at least ten characters into a reply...which would explain this useless sentence

You didn't mention this, but are you already learning ice-dance? It is actually not necessary to have a partner before learning dance if there is a pro or other skaters at your rink or in your area that you can skate with. All dancers have to learn the dances solo (for individual practice) and then with a partner.
I guess what I'm saying is don't let the lack of partner stop you from learning ice-dance. Having dance training and knowledge under your belt will make you a much more desirable partner overall.
YOu didn't state your sex but generally women will have more trouble finding partners than men.
Good luck and have fun with ice-dancing!!
icedancer2, (who despite having no partner has passed one pre-Gold dance and has a lot of fun ice-dancing!!)

Oh sorry - I just re-read you message and you said that you have been doing more and more ice-dance, so I take back most of my message, LOL.
It's just that I've talked to a lot of people that think they need a partner or it's not worth it to be an ice-dancer and then generally they don't bother to learn unless they have a partner and often would do better if they didn't have a partner... at that time...
Anyway, good luck and let us know what you find!
hey!
no worries and thanks for the help!

I have recently started doing a little bit of dance too, (and maybe its a guy/freestyler thing) but the idea of doing solo compulsory dances just doesn't seem right, though solo free dance seems fine. While without a partner you miss out on all the extra stuff: partnered spins, lifts & synchronized foot work. Also there is potential to explore counter-lever positions.
Just to add to the list by smelltheice; if you're in the UK: http://www.iskatemagazine.co.uk has a partner search section online or you can place an ad in the monthly edition.

Well, it may very well be a guy thing because in ice dance in most areas there are a lot more women that want to learn to ice-dance and currently ice-dancing than there are men partners - so my impression is that guys look out on a dance session and think, "Wow, which one of them would be my partner?" and a woman in a similar situation would look out and say, "Gee, where are all the guys?" And usually the guys want the prettiest and/or best skater out there, regardless of their own skills.
Women cannot be so choosey I guess.
I think I'm lucky to have always lived in an area where there is lots of social dance and in my current situation, there are ALMOST as many men who are skilled dancers as there are women, as well as several male pros to choose from - so we are lucky. There is always someone to skate with or to work on dances with.
I have not tested any solo dances - have taken my tests with pros... do I wish I had a partner? Sometimes, but really, not so much.
Good luck and have fun!
