Skate Canada and CBC Partner to bring Figure Skating Season to Canadians
(October 24, 2008 - OTTAWA, ON) – Skate Canada and its broadcast partner CBC have joined forces to bring the entire figure skating season to Canadians. For the first time in its history, the International Skating Union (ISU) granted the broadcast rights to a member federation. This allowed Skate Canada to work in conjunction with CBC to add broadcast coverage of all ISU Grand Prix Series Events and the ISU European Figure Skating Championships to its existing roster of skating programs.

Skate Canada CEO William Thompson was delighted to have been able to negotiate this arrangement. “We worked with the ISU to purchase the rights to broadcast these events because we wanted skating fans in Canada to have the opportunity to see both our skaters competing at international events and the talented skaters from around the world on the Grand Prix Circuit. This is an unprecedented opportunity and it is one more example of Skate Canada taking leadership to present our sport to as wide an audience as possible.”

Championships Figure Skating on CBC begins its coverage this Friday, October 24 with Skate America and will include all six of the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating events. CBC will also broadcast exclusive coverage of the 2008 HomeSense Skate Canada International from Scotiabank Place in Ottawa beginning next Friday, October 31st. In addition to the Grand Prix circuit, CBC will broadcast the BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships, the ISU European Figure Skating Championships, the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships and the ISU World Figure Skating Championships.
