If this has been covered already, my apologies - I couldn't find it.

We live in the back of beyond, and the closest decent fabric store is 6 hours away. So, I'm looking online for fabric for a new skating dress for DD but haven't found anything suitable yet. Any suggestions?

Thanks much.

Try Spandex world in NYC.... http://www.spandexworld.com/

They ship anywhere and will send you samples. The store is amazing -- I can spend hours dreaming there - matching chiffon with velvet and sparkly stuff. Came home with a suitcase full last time! Great prices too and the guys who run it are wonderful.

I looked at that website today, along with spandexhouse. I have a question about 2-way or 4-way stretch fabric. Can you use 2-way stretch for a skating dress, or does it have to be 4-way?

According to my dressmaker (aka Mom), it's possible to use 2-way, but 4-way is much easier.

As for the OP, try murielleroy.net for fabric. They have a pretty good selection, and they also carry the Swarovski and hot-fix rhinestones in a lot of different colors and sizes. They're located in Connecticut, so if you're in Maine you should get stuff from them fairly quickly too.

I've always had problems with 2-way stretch fabric getting runs (even with seam-stitching and even french seams) and not having enough "give." Most patterns don't have enough ease to make the dresses comfortable for skating if you use the 2-way fabric.

Today I received an order from spandexhouse. The color is nothing like the way it looked on the computer. I mean, it's way off! Still pretty, however. And the good thing is that the mesh/illusion matches the milliskin perfectly. They have the same color name and are truly the same color.

They forgot to include the swatches that I asked for, so I emailed them and will see if they send them.

Shipping was also quite high, because they use UPS. 3 yards milliskin, 1 yard mesh, 1 yard lining came to $33 + $11 for shipping.
