I haven't really "met" any, but Brian Boitano looked at me because I was staring at him (how embarrassing). I also got a phone call from Dick Button once. That was an experience and a half. Since I had him on the phone, I took the opportunity to ask him why the judging in the recent World Pro. (1995) had been so ludicrous. Which was totally unlike me because I'm so shy. (I figured I'd never have the opportunity again to speak my mind to him) I had him so flustered by the end of the conversation that he wished me a Happy 1966! It was January of '96. LOL!

My oldest sister met John Misha Petkevich when we lived in Great Falls, Montana back in the late 60's. I think he was the U.S. champ at the time.

The only one I've really met and chatted with was Karen Magnussen, at Worlds in Vancouver. What a sweetie she is! :) She even introduced me to her husband.

Hmm, I guess it depends on how "meeting" is defined.

I was one of the winners in the Keri Lotion-sponsored sweepstakes almost 2 yrs ago - which got me a trip to '01 (U.S.) Nats and a skating clinic w/ Peggy Fleming and Sasha Cohen. So I got to meet the two of them - both very nice and friendly people. As part of our "prize", the winners and guests got to attend the team breakfast that Sun. morning, after our skating clinic, so I got to say hello/congrats and get autographs and pics with Michelle Kwan, Todd Eldredge, Tim Goebel, Angela N., Sarah Hughes, and Michael Weiss (who was very kind to greet and spend time w/ autograph seekers after his disastrous performance the day before).

I had another chance to talk to Todd and get his autograph at the Chevy-sponsored skating clinic in Philly that I attended two weeks ago.

This year at Nats in L.A., my mom and I saw Sasha several times - on the bus to the practice rink, the arena concourse (Sasha was in the hot pretzel line) - and we chatted with her briefly. I must say that she was the most friendly and down-to-earth of all the top skaters we said hello to during the week - Derrick Delmore was also very friendly, as was his coach. It will be interesting to see if Sasha's demeanor changes now that she's with Tarasova.

I got an autograph and pic with/Scott H. at Nats this year as he was walking through the concourse and stopped to greet the clamoring fans. My mom and I both told him how much we missed him at SOI this year, and he thanked us.

I've shaken hands w/ Brian Boitano, Liz P./Jerod S., and Kristi Y. during COI/SOI finales, but I didn't actually talk to them.

d-uh, I just remembered I met Paul Martini briefly a couple of weeks ago at a rink. He was there with his wife, and one of their munchkins was playing hockey. I didn't really talk to him though -- probably 3 or 4 sentences maximum -- so that's probably why I forgot about it!

That certainly hasn't happened - I met her this past weekend at the Newington fall show, to pass her birthday gift from the SashaFans (http://www.sashafans.com) site to her. She was really gracious, said thanks, and that she'd open it later that night, and I got a pix with her (hope it comes out!). She was asking around to make sure all the little girls got autographs, and her dad was busy with a digital camera taking pictures (probably has one of me too!).

Sasha looks really happy to be in Newington... very focused out on the ice, relaxed and laid back off. Tatiana Tarasova came and sat with the crowd... she could have sat in the hockey boxes at the other end but didn't. I don't think anyone approached TT during that time she was with the crowd.

I've met Paul Martini when I was at US Nationals in LA - SandraD and Meredith were dragging me around... and insisted I had to say hello to him. Of course he knew my name, we chatted a little. The only really known skater I saw on the bus was Sarah Hughes - Meredith attempted to shove me into the seat next to her (I resisted! - ummm, NO! - not where the bus is almost empty). Anyhow a few minutes later, Robin Wagner (who was on the bus too) claimed that seat.

I'd rather be a mouse in the crowd most times... and just enjoy the skating. ;)

I was in the same store as Michael Weiss once. I couldn't think of a single thing to say to him so I just kept my mouth shut and went about my business. Although the whole time I was in the store with him, I kept trying to think of something I could say to him  I'm not a big fan of his, so I wasn't about to pretend to gush to him about his skating. He did seemed like a nice, personable young man though from the way he was interacting with some of the people in the store. Kind of soft-spoken too. Totally different from the "cocky" attitude that people sometimes think he projects in some of those fluff TV interviews.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the Michael Weiss perception versus him in "real life". I was at Fairfax Ice Arena and I was walking backwards and talking when my friend yelled, "Stop! Wait!" and I backed right into Michael! Eep! He was talking to a bunch of admiring little kids and it was really cute. I was like, "Oops, sorry!!" and got out of there! I was embarrassed. But when I was looking back later, he seemed to be very personable and was giving everyone some time.

I got to go to the meet-and-greet after Kurt Browning's Gotta Dance last fall, so I got to meet, talk to, and be photographed with:
~ Kurt
~ Brian O.
~ Isabelle and Lloyd
~ Josée (and Jean-Michelle, even though he didn't skate in the show)
~ Stephen Cousins

And a few years back I was on the same plane as Liz Manley, so I got to talk briefly with her.

Hey Adrian, I know who you are now! I was there when you gave Sasha her present because my friend and I had been asked to stand there and keep people from going backstage. I would have said hi if I knew it was you! Oh well, maybe next show.

I am definitely coming for the next show, so we'll definitely meet up then! :D

Actually from what I saw - your crowd control job was pretty easy - you should have seen the droves of little girls at the ISI benefit show in Marlborough, MA - the practically filled up both stairways going to a pretty large area on another floor of the arena there, where Sasha was giving out autographs.

Do you know if they soldout all the tickets? The arena looked pretty full - not that there was a lot of seating capacity though (if I count right, you can fit a couple hundred people on those bleachers). Offhand I'd say less seating capacity than at ISCC (Simsbury). I guess that's why 2 shows was definitely needed.

I met Maria B and her coach in '99 after she became World Champion. She is very pretty and petite. I don't think television does her justice. She didn't seem to understand English very well.

I have been so blessed to have met with several famous skaters and many famous coaches.
I used to skate with Sarah Hughes years ago. Though I am not a close friend of the family or anything, I can say that she is every bit as sweet and unassuming as she is made out to be. I am a fan of all of the skaters, but I must admit to having a Sarah bias! My eyes tear every time I see her on tv, just remembering the tiny little skater with whom I used to share practice ice.
Another memorable meeting was at the 1994 Eastern Sectionals. I was there to compete in the adult category. This was in the dark ages before we had our own adult nationals. I chatted for a bit with Calla Urbanski. I told her that she was an inspiration to me as an adult skater. Not only was she very sweet and gracious but she asked me about myself and seemed genuinely interested in my skating! She seemed so friendly and outgoing to everybody.
My favorite bit of bragging that I do is that I actually taught an OLYMPIC skater how to do a spin!!! LOL. OK, It was a man and he was a pair skater and it was a layback spin and he just never happened to try one.
At first I thought that he was patronizing me as he does have a funny sense of humor but he said "No, really. I never did one before." (He did ok on the first one. On the second, I told him to keep his shoulders even and lift his ribs, etc.. and he did a perfect one. SIGH! It is so easy for the gifted!) When I saw him at another event, I admitted that I brag all over the place about it!
I don't know how it is in other sports but I cannot get over the fact that a "Little Miss Nobody" like me can hob-nob with the great ones!

I've mentioned a couple times that the only skater I've ever met was Tiffany Chin. We shared a linguistics class at UCLA. She came in late to my discussion group and asked to share my notes, which I obliged. We talked while leaving class. And I never saw her again.

BTW, I said the stupid phrase "You skate, right?" Of course I knew the answer to the question, but I didn't want to sound like a skating fanatic (though I am and was at the time). She said something like "uh huh". So, I dropped the subject!

This was probably 1989 or 1990.

Adrian, did you get to talk to Tarasova? I always felt like I would be intimidated into not talking to her if I ever saw her...is she nice in person? She seems like she would be.

No - I didn't (there were skaters on the ice when she was seated, it wouldn't be nice). She doesn't look intimidating at all though. Maybe someday, I'll go say hello!
