View Full Version : Who choreographed MK's FOG?
I just finished watching the repeat of the Worlds Exhibitions on ESPN and it made me wonder . . .
Who choreographed Kwan's "Fields of Gold?"
That is a classic.

Its a classic but seems lacking in technical elements... the footwork, the entrance to jumps and spins, etc - all very easy. This is actually the first time I watched the content of the program, and it seemed simple overall, though with lots of beautiful transitions.

It's a great program, with all the moves matched with the music. Wonderful expression...Though it is fairly simple, sometimes that's all skating needs to be (especially in exhibition format)....anyway it met the moment. And I think Michelle knows that her quality of movement is so great that sometimes its marvelous all on its own. It's part of her charm. Take out all the jumps spins and footwork and she is still one of the best.

and THAT'S what makes the program so absolutely beautiful...funny how that's lost on some people... :P
Thanks, Purplecat.
Haribobo, your comment that "you can take out all the jumps, spins and footwork and she is still one of the best" reminds me of an exhibition MK did at the rink in Rockefeller Center last year.
It was raining cats and dogs in NYC and Katie Couric felt it would be impossible for MK to skate. In the closing moments of the morning show, the rain stopped and MK skated a program that brought tears to my eyes. I think the only jumps she did were falling leaves.
I never tape Rockefeller Center performances by skaters because that rink doesn't usually bring out the best in them. Dang but I wish I had MK's performance on tape. :-)

Take out technical content in any artistic skater's program and you still get brilliance.
Case in point: Paul Wylie's Bach program...Michelle's Fields of Gold...Joanna Glick's tribute to her brother...etc. :)
Adrian, you hit the nail on the head. She does the simplest things so well and with such edge control that it takes your breath away. I have CDROM of this and I showed it to 2 people and they were just flabbergasted, they thought it was so beautiful and she was so graceful they didn't understand why skaters can't do that in competition. :-) I think Michelle, Paul W, Katia Gordeeva and Dorothy H. (just to name a few) have such extension and purity of line and edge control that they could do programs without jumps and I would be enthralled to me that's what makes skating great and that's what makes great skating.

Adrian, if it were simple to skate like Michelle does during that program, then there would be more skaters doing so. And there are few who can, at least at the senior televised level :) (It does sound like there are also a lot of gorgeous skaters who never get noticed, b/c they can't get the jumps etc. together for competition :( )

The tribute performance of FOG instantly reminded me of the reasons why I love figure skating. All those glorious, effortless, flowing, deep edges interwoven with such seamlessness that it takes your breath away. I cannot count the times I rewound my tape just to see it again & again. You can see that purity of line that is in Hamill's Pie Jesu & Katerina's performance about birds, where she starts the program skating ever widening circles in the middle of the ice. For me, this is what FIGUREskating is all about.

It's similar to what people say about John Lennon's "Imagine". Simple melody, but such a beautiful and classic song. Same applies with FOG.
