I'm glad that the Zhangs were able to come back from the short program disaster, and also that the Germans got a medal -- I really like this team. And of course congrats to Shen and Zhao for another gold: they are in a class of their own, I couldn't have imagined them not winning.

I think that it is really great that Canada is still able to send 3 teams next year!!

I'm wondering what happened to the Polish couple & Petrova/Tikhonov:?: :?:

I can't wait to watch the coverage on CBC tonight!!:D :D

I'm wondering what happened to the Polish couple & Petrova/Tikhonov.

They both withdrew after the short. So it could have been a. they were injured or sick, decided to try skating anyway, but then when they didn't have a chance decided to withdraw, or b. just decided to withdraw rather than hurting their reputations by not placing well.

I really hope it's option a.

The Siudeks withdrew after he threw out his back during warm-up.

Petrova and Tikhonov withdrew due to Alexei having a leg injury.

Thanks for the info, VGL. Of course I'm not glad that they're injured ... but I am glad it wasn't just a sulk.

Shen and Zhao deserved it, it is the best I seen them skate. Very beautiful.

It may have been the best you have seen them skate, but it was FAR from their best.

I would have to say that their 2003 Worlds LP in D.C. was one of the best LP's EVER!!!

I agree, Lark. I still get goosebumps just thinking about that performance. I remember it being so utterly engrossing that I couldn't believe it was over.

But of course their skate this year was also fabulous and well deserving of the win. I'll really miss them next season.

ITA. Of course, with the YouTube link posted, I had to watch it yet again, and now am teary-eyed.

Found their first worlds LP (http://youtube.com/watch?v=9HORNrTI2eU). You could see where they were going way back in 1994.

They have a chemistry with each other that is just so special. I've never been affected that way by any other pairs team, although there are others I've loved in particular performances. I've been watching to see if I can pick out what does it, and I think some of it is just small things like turning the head to look at the other, lowering the head, reaching arms, etc. These are really nuances that I think most teams cannot manage on top of the technical skills they must display. I have to believe that it comes naturally to Shen & Zhao.

There just seems to be a "punch" in their performances. And a humbleness, if that makes any sense.

Maybe it's because they are in love.

Yes, I posted the news already. But I think their chemistry was apparent way back in 1994, when Shen they were just 15 and 20.
