Tonight's semi final has closed, leaving three competitors (and partners) for the final next week. So far, I have watched every programme, and enjoyed seeing as much as I was able to observe, allowing for my poor knowledge base. Next week involves aerial stunts, using a wire and harness. Sadly for me, this means I will not be watching, as I feel it is more stunt orientated, and not skating ... although I do accept that it may be part of the performing skate repertoire.

Comments?

I haven't seen any of it, as I'm in the US, but you may get more replies if you post in the Show Reviews, Event Discussion & Results forum (http://www.skatingforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=10). Maybe a moderator can move the thread for you.

Thanks for that, I didnt think of putting on another board, as personal programmes etc get discussed here, and my thread is only light hearted really. Whatever the moderators think though ...

hmm. you won't be watching just because you feel it *might* be too stunt oriented? why not watch it and then make your judgement? otherwise you might miss out on some interesting things.

Last year, the person who was knocked out in the preliminary stages of the final was the one who skated least, despite the aerial stunts - which, properly done, can enhance that sort of "show skating" routine. Improperly done, of course, they detract from it, but that's what sorts the sheep from the goats!

Since my coach is related to one of the participants, I've been watching every week via youtube. Just type in Dancing on Ice 2007. I'm amazed by how quickly some of the celebs have progressed.

I love Dancing on Ice. However, a few things REALLY bug me about it!

1) How can they call it "ice dance" when they get the most points for basically being swung around and spining. With the exception of free dance, jumps and spins aren't even allowed! Torvill and Dean hardly used them, so why should the celebs?! Clare for instance, like Bonnie last year, is just being spun about and has little time on the ice.

2) That Jason bloke! Who the hell does he think he is?! Anyone can say to me, who knows what they are on about, "Ice Dancer you can't skate", but if they were to say "Ice Dancer you can't skate and you look fat in that dress" I wouldn't be best pleased!

3) The male celebrities have a much more difficult time. They have to learn to lift their partners, whereas the females just have to be lifted. I am so happy that Kyran, who in my oppinion is amazing, is getting the points to show this, however last week there is no way that Clare should have stayed in place of Lee.

I am sorry that is my rant over. In respect of the skating, they do have to do two other skates as well so it isn't just the flying. I just want to see Clare go in third place where she belongs with Kyran first and Duncan second.

I have had extended discussions with my family over this programme, and next week's viewing. We WILL be watching, but currently I think I will be a bit cynical of the aerial part, having seen it last year and been disappointed. However, as pointed out, there will be quality skating in there as well.

As for other interesting comments ...
I think Jason was deliberately chosen as one of the judges, to be the Simon Cowell of the group, in order to secure good viewing. His comments are very abrupt, and unnecessarily extreme in some cases, crossing onto rudeness at times. Not the clinical assessment I expect of a judge.
I won't enter into debate over Clare vs Lee, only to say that Emily should have been in the skate off, this is the sad skewing that accompanies public voting. This has now been levelled, but at the expense of two superior performers, Lee and Lisa, in my opinion anyway.

The programme has definitely had significant impact on public skating, our local rink is currently swamped on public sessions, and enrolment in the group courses is fully booked as soon as the tills are opened. Having completed the course, but not yet having a coach (they are all fully booked too!) I am assisting on the LTS programme, in order to make my interest known, and of course to help the new arrivals! The instructor asks me to give a bit of personal encouragement to the 'nervous' ones, so she can concentrate on covering the technical side. No one has complained yet, so I can't be doing that badly, but I did think of how destructive Jason's comments could be in this scenario. I was taught that critical comment should be delivered in the 'sandwich' method, a positive comment, then a critical one, then another positive comment.

Sorry ! getting on a soap box here :D best shut up quickly.

I love that description Derek :) I will be looking this week to see if this is a tactic my coach uses on me that I have just never yet noticed!!

I like the 'sandwich' idea too, Derek lol!

I agree that Emily should have gone out already. I like her as a person, and I think she made a huge improvement at the beginning, but Lisa and Lee were much better skaters and should have stayed in.

I really, really want Kyran to win - he so deserves to.

Me too. To the point where I might even vote for him - we don't usually vote in these things, but very, very occasionally vote for our favourite in the final (of Strictly Come Dancing, as well).

I agree with you there, Sonic. But just like Christopher Dean, I'm wondering just how Kyran's going to fit "body-popping" into a Bolero routine ...

Lol! Maybe he could make incorporate it into the 'flinging-himself-into-volcano-' bit at the end?

Hi

I agree with pretty much everything that has allready been stated on this thread. Emily allthough nice as a person, in my opinion should have gone out 3 weeks ago leaving lee and lisa in a little longer to prove their worth.

I dont like the scoring system on Dancing on Ice, why are these celebs being graded with 5's and 6's? why not 1s and 2s whish is what they would probably get in a real competition.

Oh and yeah I want Kyran to win too, hes a top bloke, lotsa nerve and he deserves it.

Kyran to win for me too, with Clare 2nd and Dunc 3rd. I liked Emily (HATED Dan though - didn't like him when he was with Gaynor either), but Lisa and Lee should have got further than her. Pam should have won though .

Duncan's skating is better than Clare's, although you've got to hand it to her on the lifts. So for that reason my vote goes to:
1. Kyran; 2. Duncan; 3. Clare.

Be interesting to see how the three of them manage artistically with Bolero 8O ... daaaaaah, dada dada dada da dada daaaaaaaah ... 8O

I totally agree with that running. I went off Clare weeks ago, she hasn't progressed as much as the others, and all she seems to do is those lifts, which I don't think should even be in there!

Pam should have won though .

Pam was the professional so she wouldn't have won, Foxy would have. I liked Foxy, but I don't think he would have progressed as much as Duncan and Kyran have.

Even I can admit Foxy was rubbish - me! But I was gutted Pam went out so early.
