I went to a group lesson tonight with my big bro.
I haven't skated in 6 months due to a knee injury
:frus: I should have waited longer before going back. Although I could do most of the stuff I did before (back crossovers are coming together much better - I can do them one way well, the other way is just crappy!) and I did notice *some* pain...
But it's now been almost an hour since the lesson and my knee is throbbing :giveup: I had to limp into the house when I got out of the car it's been so sore!! I will have to see how it goes tomorrow, but geez this is SO frustrating!!
Why cant' it just be better and be done with it!?

Have you been to a doctor or gone to PT? Sounds like there's something fairly major going on.

You'll have to ice it after you skate for a while, to keep the swelling (and throbbing) down. An anti-inflammatory might help, too.

Just learned something -> lower temperatures help the stronger joint cartilage regrow instead of the weaker fibrocartilage! So icing your knee after skating really does some good beyond just numbing you up!

Have you been to a doctor or gone to PT? Sounds like there's something fairly major going on.
Yes I've been going to PT since the day I injured my knee. However it's alot better than what it was. I just saw the orthopaedic surgeon last week (2nd visit) and he basically said this was as good as it's going to get. So I figured I'm not going to put my life on hold for it...
He also suggested anti-inflammatories but I cannot take them as I have a life-threatening allergy to aspirin and all anti-inflammatories apparently have some relative to aspirin in them so I have been told never to take them or use the creams... the only thing he said was in 6 weeks if it's still playing up, he will give me a cortisone injection but I'm not keen on that one little bit.

Hey Try and take Glucosamine My PT told me to take it instead of Pain Killers and I have fount it helps lots and also Fish Oil I stuffed up my knee 4 Months ago and have been off the ice for 3 months and now currently back. Best thing you should do is still give it rest

I try not to take aspirin, et al, since I have ulcer problems. I do take a product called "Move Free" which has glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM - it helps a lot with my arthritis. In fact, the days when I forget to take it are very painful, and remind me why I can't forget to take it.

I broke my ankle last July. I did not walk for 2 months and spent (at least) another couple wks w/ crutches. Then I walked very slowly w/ a *very* pronounced limp for another month or 2. I started skating as soon as I felt able. I was on the ice in Oct (I think). I limped onto the ice and limped back off. Although I walk reasonably well into the rink these days, I limp back out. My doc said I can skate, I can even run. My bone has healed. However, he said it will be about 1 yr total before I have no residual effects of the break. That means I limp. It doesn't bother me. It beats not walking. Plus, you cannot limp on the ice. Impossible. Skating allows me a graceful unbroken stride that i cannot have on the ground, at least not yet.
Talk to your doc about the pain you feel. It is probably normal and the exercise is probably great therapy. Talk to him/her about limping. How long can you reasonably expect before you stop limping? I expect to limp for ~1 yr. Knowing that puts my mind at ease.

I sprained my anckle (landing leg) some, sat at the side of the rink during 5 minutes or so, and went back jumping the flip with the rest of the class after that. WHOA did it swell next day!
3 days later, the swelling was gone and I went figure skating, having steadily decided not to jump. Unfortunately, there were some people at the rink who are better spinners than me and that always gets me jumping. So I did my flip, and my lutz. AND WHOA DID IT SWELL NEXT DAY!
Ended up barely skating for 2 weeks, only practicing my spins. Barely walking actually. Though walking is great for sprained ankcles, I discovered, as I still had to walk to university for my clases.
BAD IDEA to skate with injuries! That is, you can skate, but not what puts strain on that injury!
