I was taken aback by the fact that Evan is in first after the SP. I swear that the second jump of his 3/3 was underrotated. Could someone verify that for me?

Does anyone feel that maybe Johnny was marked a little low? I have felt a major backlash toward Johnny in the last several months. Just the way that the commentators talk about him, their attitudes. Does anyone else think that the judges are being influenced by the slightly negative vibe directed toward Johnny?

there's less than a half point difference and the marks were in the high 70s. it's anybody's grab.

I thought Evan's spins had more variation and his footwork was more interesting. Johnny's jumps were cleaner but I got tired of the sit spin where he tucks under and looks like a mushroom.

Does anyone else think that the judges are being influenced by the slightly negative vibe directed toward Johnny? The ABC/ESPN commentators talk a lot about how his new program is strong and masculine, but I don't sense a negative vibe. In fact I think they favored Johnny tonight, saying that his footwork seemed stronger than Evan's. They positively gushed over him at Marshalls (not a real event I know). Haven't seen what they said at the GPF.

Anyway, I don't see why that should change the judges scoring. Whatever gets said about Johnny, few people say that his skating is badly executed. They might say he's inconsistent, or that he lacks a quad, but not that he is bad at anything he does when he's 'on'.

My only comment is that both he and evan *looked* slow, but it's very hard to tell such things on-camera.

I couldn't tell from the youtube vids I saw about a two foot, but I tend to agree with you: they both did the same jumps and Johnney's covered more ice, and plus I think Evan still has a 6.0 approch, lots of strokes with poses within strokes, while Johnney is always doing more difficult things, always on an edge, always doing real footwork inbetween, even lots of ice dance type twizzles of very high speed and quality, so IMHO you are correct.

But then, I'm so used to this sort of thing, I really can't get upset about it any more!

I only watched Lysacek (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6E9bRecmNk) and Weir (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z7kh4C7TQ8) on YouTube.

The replays showed Lysacek landed the 3Lutz/3Toe jump clean; it was a bad call by the announcer that he two-footed the landing. His triple axel looked pre-rotated, though. Lysacek looked tentative; is this the debut of this short program or did he use it on the Grand Prix circuit? His camels weren't great and that cost him as well as the circular footwork. Still, first place is a good place to sit after the SP.

Even though I'm rooting for Evan to win, I thought (as did the judges) Weir skated much better; the program flowed, everything was clean and strong. I do agree that there were too many tucked sit spins, it became repetitive. (Many that cost him points?)

It's still a very close race, as you can see by the USFSA Results page HERE (http://www.usfsa.org/live_event_results.asp?type=senior&id=37307).

I'm so happy for Ryan Bradley. I hope he can keep it up for the long.

isn't this a nice problem to have, to debate over the merits of two clean skates from two exciting athletes?

How did Evan get higher scores for Choreography and Interpretation than Johnny? Did Evan have any choreography??? Evan seemed to me to just be flailing, though nicely, and skating between elements. I am confused.

Doesn't USFSA give you detailed classification marks for your competitions? That would make it easier to compare. In addition to giving mark breakdowns for each element, you can see if one or two judges marked on choreography, for example, a lot higher (or lower) than others, or if it was more or less an average across the board.

I thought his program had a lot of flailing as well. I was not a big fan of it overall. I thought Johnny's was much cleaner looking and more pleasant to watch.

I figure we just have to wait until the protocols are up -- possibly some of Evan's spins/footwork were higher level than Johnny's or maybe he had more jumps/combinations -- worth more points in the technical mark. If his PCS scores are higher than Johnny's, though, I will be steamed (steamed:!: , I tell you!! -- like anyone would care.:) :P )
