Will Ferrell and Jon Heder in "Blades of Glory." Basic story: same-sex pairs team, with the obligatory homosexual references. It probably would be more funny if the main characters were desperate-to-compete heterosexuals. (It might be the plotline, can't tell from the trailer.)

The trailer started out funny, but it got smutty very quickly.

This looks like it's going to be either really good, or really stupid.

Looks hilarious! I can't wait to see it. At least it doesn't pretend to be realistic, like those other skating movies.

That's a good point!

Maybe we should start a prediction thread: box office bomb or rocket?

It appears that Will Ferrel's character is supposed to be the incredibly straight guy and Jon Heder is the "flamboyant" one ;) . I'm predicting the two butt heads at first but ending up becoming a unified team, accepting their differences but not before a whole slew of stereotypical jokes and misunderstandings.

I'm confident it will be really stupid but it could surprise me by being funny as well. I mean "I see you still look like a 15 year old girl but not hot"...seriously....so dumb....yet I'm laughing.

I've been looking forward to this movie since it was released. I generally like Will Ferrel's comedies (although Anchorman was just too much for me! I wanted to walk out) and anything skating will disract me for awhile- I can always watch the great jumps their doubles do if the movie is terrible.

I'm sure it will have every stereotypical joke - but as long as most of the movie is on the ice- and skaters don't come off looking too terrible, I'm happy!

Im so excited to see this movie! Will Ferrel is one of my favorite actor probably because of my sily sense of humour.
Does anyone know when it is coming out?

Hey, Sasha Cohen is in the movie (as a cameo appearance only?).

The release is Fri., March 30.

I am not a prude, really, but I was a teeny bit turned off by the Trailer. I felt it was making fun of a sport I really love and enjoy. It IS Will Ferrell, who is the ultimate frat boy, and I cannot see any respect being brought to the sport through this movie.
That is just the way I see it.

This movie looks brilliant and so funny. I saw it advertised at the Cinema in the US while i was there. I also can't wait to see it when it 'hopefully' comes out in the UK.

I was at a test session at the Detroit Skating Club, and they have a HUGE display advertising the movie in their lobby.

I'm seeing Will's character as similar to Norbert Shramm from the 80s and Heder's as more Johnny Weir.

I think with the number of cameos from skating stars in this movie that the reputation of the sport is in tact. And if you can't laugh at yourself, then you are taking yourself too seriously.

I may have to watch "On Thin Ice" tonight in preparation for this!

Isk8NYC

I'm seeing <snip> Heder's as more Johnny Weir. In looking at the photo on the website, they used Johnny's costumer for Heder. LOL

I do like the myspace pages they set up - I think the comments are from real people, given the amount of cursing...

We should do a skatingforums meetup to go see this movie.

So, who's going to see the new skating movie, out in the UK on the 30th March? Who's already seen it in the US? Is it good?

It's about the "first ever pair of male skaters in the history of figure skating". Looks funny.

I'm not thrilled with either of their website (ahem) activities, but "Skate your Face Off" is humorous. (Pick Jimmy - he's got better face time on camera.) and "Mascots on Ice" certainly wasn't what I expected. (Very dark humor, though)

Well, who's up for a SkatingForums movie meetup?

Emberchyld
03-03-2007, 07:55 AM
Count me in for a NY/North Jersey meet-up (I'm good with pretty much any theatre that I can drive to, from Clifton Commons all the way up to the Palisades Mall. NYC itself is a bit harder)

We should start scoping out all theatres for wireless :P

Isk8NYC
03-03-2007, 08:17 AM
A New Jersey meetup sounds good to me; Manhattan's a PITA when you work in one state and live in another.

We should start scoping out all theatres for wireless :PBrilliant!

Clifton Commons AMC Theaters are on Route 3 EASTBOUND near Target and Barnes & Noble.
The shopping plaza is convenient to Route 17, Turnpike, and Parkway.

http://www.movietickets.com/house_detail.asp?exid=amc&SearchRadius=40&SearchZip=07014&house_id=5969&ShowDate=0&house_pos=1
(Doesn't say anything about wireless, though. B&N might have access, right?)

We just have to wait and see if that theater is actually going to show this movie on March 30th.

Anyone else interested in a meetup? Can't make it to Clifton, NJ?
Post your travel range and see if anyone else wants to join you!

Isk8NYC
03-06-2007, 08:09 AM
Okay, 3 for Clifton. (Smooth how I included you Renatele, huh?)
I know there are Sectionals this weekend so people are distracted. It's okay, we have time before the movie opens.

It would be cool to attend a showing before the movie actually comes out.
Hmmmm....

ETA: Confirmed with my DH that HE'LL be taking the kids to the Laser Light Show on 3/30 and I'm going to see a PG-13 movie.
Clifton, NJ, here we come!

Do you realize this thread has been viewed over 1200 times, but only a handful replied? Hmmmm....

We need people in other "central locations" to set up viewing sites!

I went to the preview of Blades last night - Dorothy Hamill invited a bunch to the Baltimore preview. It was great to be there with a theater full of skaters and see people I haven't seen in quite a while. It was a hoot! Does anyone know who any skating doubles used in the movie are?According to IFS Magazine's article (April 2007):
Sarah Kawahara: Primary Skating Consultant (technique/elements/costuming)
Lisa-Marie Allen: Associate Choreographer
Will Arnett (Stranz Fairchild) was a childhood hockey skater in Canada.
All the other actors had no skating experience, but were tutored in basic skating skills.
Jon Heder was supposedly a fast learner.

Skating Doubles:
Chad Brennan
Patrick Hancock
Ethan Burgess and
Tiffany Scott

<<ETA: Here's a link to a Univ. of Delaware article (http://www.udel.edu/PR/UDaily/2007/mar/blades032807.html) about the skating stand-ins. Also includes info on special screening 3/31/2007 >>

I hope all of the top skaters who turned professional actors/actresses start getting better reviews. I'd like to see a skating movie where the leads actually skate. Wouldn't it be great to see Sasha act and skate in a movie about skating, like Sonya Henie's later movies?

Well, of course I didn't get to attend the meet up, but I just got back from the movie.

Not bad, I enjoyed it a lot- and I don't think it made figure skating look bad at all.

There was a lot of suspending disbelief, but as they were running around on their ice skates all I could think was "OH! They're ruining their blades!"

Very funny movie, I highly recommend.

(BTW: I realize that by design it was not an "R" rated movie, but I don't think I'd allow MY 13-14 year old to see this, if I had one.)

Well, I joined you guys in spirit Friday night and my husband and I went and saw it. It is not hilarious, but I enjoyed it -- for that kind of movie (dbny I think you will like it, just don't go expecting any great movie-making!).

Our audience was large but it wasn't one of those laugh-riot type audiences - you could hear loud guffaws and chuckles and there was always a slight murmur when one of the "real" skaters made a cameo appearance, which was interesting.

I'm wondering, though - I saw it at a theater where they were showing it in the large auditorium with surround sound and all that and got the feeling that people were laughing but I just couldn't hear them and that it was more like watching the film in your own living room. Does anyone have a feeling (or overt knowledge) about this kind of venue, or am I just making this up and the movie wasn't all that funny or maybe Portland audiences aren't the laugh-out-load types?

I enjoyed it though and can't wait to see the DVD where I hope they show how they did all of the skating - the doubles and animation and wires and stuff.

Can't tell you- but the movie theatre here is stadium seating surround sound sort of place and the entire theatre was cracking up. We also went to a 7:30 showing and the audience was mostly young high school/ older middle school age. Very few adults. They seemed to find it hysterical. I found it to be funny and entertaining but only because I went with very low expectations and they were much exceeded.

I saw it with a full theatre and there were quite alot of people around me around my age (in their 20s), and there was tons of laughing I could hear...I actually thought it was nice, because I was laughing too, so it was fun having the whole theatre get into it!! I definitely enjoyed the movie.

I was cringing watching how they abused those poor skates!!!

But a friend and I went to a quite crowded theatre, various ages (many in their 20s, like myself, but also 30s or teens). Everyone was either laughing or groaning, depending on the scene.

As I had thought the movie was going to be quite painful, I was pleasantly surprised. Though, my favorite was the listing of the pairs names... they all appeared to be singles skaters in real life!

I really enjoyed the movie-- it was a fun escape and I think they even managed to poke fun at every stereotype in skating (oh, the costumes, the costumes!). It was also nice to watch with other skaters... I think we allllllll cringed during the blade destruction scenes!

My sister and her boyfriend saw it on Friday night as well (in another town), and they also loved it. Sister's BF apparently laughed so hard during the pairs' first "program" that he was practially bent in two.

It's not going to win any awards for acting or plot, but it definitely had me laughing (and I'm usually not a fan of raunchy humor)

SPOILER WARNING

You mean their characters- yeah, they were really supposed to be brothers and sisters, with that creepy relationship (that pairs skaters actually sometimes portray on the ice, IMO- but not in off ice interviews that I've seen) where you *wonder* if they are really "more" than brother sister.

The actors are husband and wife, which made it funnier, IMO.

I just saw this movie Friday afternoon, and it was one of the funniest movie's I've ever seen! Of course my sister and I were the only ones who seemed to know remotly anything about figure skating, so every time they showed a clip of any actual skating competition I was sitting there saying who was skating. Also did anyone else notice that when they showed the list for the standings (In the last part of the movie before Will's and Jon's characters took the ice), the names of the skaters were actual names of singles skaters but made into pairs?

You bet! Pluschenko/Sokolova - what a weird alliance!

I guess I'm a little late in seeing the movie, but I saw it Saturday night with a skating friend. I thought it was funny, not hysterical but very funny. It would be hilarious after drinking a glass of wine! :halo:

Okay guys! I feel embarassed to admit that I finally got around to going to the movie theater... and this is my first movie in a LOOOOONG time! (The last time I watched a movie, it was right after my sciatica episode and my lower back HATED me for it. This time my lower back didn't bother me as much afterwards (but I still had to do a lot of walking and standing and stretching afterwards.)

Anyway, DH thought that there were spots that were way too crude for me. I told him that I already know going in that there would be some crude parts and I had my flame retardent suit on for protection! It was funny but not necessarily HILARIOUS!!! I think I've spent most of my time taking inventory of all the VIOLATIONS that USFSA and the ISU wouldn't allow during the skater's routine. (Costume, gestures, music choice, the "lotus" move, etc...) I think during the second fight between the two male pair skaters where the coach was taking note of them doing pairs moves as they were fighting, I was thinking like the coach: "Oh, platter lift" and "Oh! Throw jump!"

The most hilarious part for hubby was when I think Chaz was doing an axel. Scott, acting as the annoucer yells out "WOW!!! THAT'S A TRIPLE AXEL!!!" I yelled back "That's a SINGLE AXEL!!!" Or when the pairs were doing that dangerous "lotus" I was yelling "That's an ILLEGAL PAIR SPIN IN REAL LIFE!!!" Hubby was shaking his head thinking "I trust my wife!!!" :P  (I could just imagine what the others in the theatre were thinking when I yelled that.) :halo:
