[quote:af673e4bfb]NOTTINGHAM, England — “Jayne and I have been asked by Buckingham Palace to put on a gala for the Queen in Nottingham,” said Christopher Dean of himself and partner Jayne Torvill. “It’s a combination of the Queen officially opening the Nottingham Ice Arena and a celebration of her Golden Jubilee,” added the 1984 Olympic Ice Dance gold medalist, four-time World Champion and three-time World Professional Champion.
Torvill, 44, and Dean, 43, will serve as producers, choreographers and hosts for the one-hour ice show taking place in their hometown. The performers will include Elena Berezhnaya & Anton Sikharulidze, Marina Anissina & Gwendal Peizerat, Sasha Cohen, Ilia Kulik, Kurt Browning, Kristi Yamaguchi and Steven Cousins. Members of the British national team, including recent Olympians Marika Humphreys & Vitaliy Baranov, local figure skaters and local hockey players will also participate. A live orchestra will play for the closing number.[/quote:af673e4bfb]
Sasha and Kristi are the only two US skaters amongst the cast - it must be a great honor for them both to be invited to participate. 8O
WOW!!!

yup! quite impressive. I knew Sasha was gonna make a big name for herself soon, and look, it's only her first complete season!! she's just amazing and i'm sure her invitations are not going to stop there with the Queen. She kicks butt and everyone knows it.

How exciting! I am so proud of our US lady skaters!
Also, it is nice that Sasha received this invitation. The exposure and experience will be wonderful for her. :)

 WOW
Kristi and Sasha. What a marvelous combo. I wonder how and who came up with this selection? And, what does it mean?
Also, I was thinking that I would love to see Sasha skate to some Christopher Dean choreography. I think she would be wonderful at interpreting his ideas.
Performing for the Queen is such an unique honor. And, participating in any way, shape of form in the Queen's jubilee year is amazing.
I gotta say, though, it is way random!

If I win that big lottery check, I'll fly us all over. Failing that windfall, I do hope it will be televised over here. What a prestigious honor!

Isn't this a marvelous cast? I do hope we have the opportunity to see it (should one of us fail to win the lottery) on television.

I know that in the past Canadian TV has shown Royal Galas. With Canada's major interest in ice shows, I'm really hoping this one's earmarked for TV. *crossing fingers*
With that line up, it can't help but be a terrific show! :D

sulin, if it is shown in Canada, do you plan to tape the program? If so, I would LOVE to have a copy in the event it is not broadcast in the US. :)

Sandra, if I'm at home when and if they show it, I will definitely tape. Problem is I go away for about 5 weeks in the summer.
So if it's shown during that time, I'll be lined up with the rest of you to get a copy!!!

Not so random, IMHO...this is the creme d'la creme, IMHO.
My hunch is that Torvil & Dean picked the skaters (and I'm sure some they might have picked could not appear for various reasons) as they are the producers.
Its almost like a "dream team"...Browning, Kulik, Kristi, Sasha, B&S, A&P!!!!!
IMHO, Sasha is a lot like Kulik in the past...everyone knew he was among the very best, but he was just not as consistent as some other skaters who were not as accomplished all around as he was. Sasha is very, very high quality.

I'm really struggling with the notion that GB will have this broadcast on TV.
If the sport doesn't have a ball in it, I'm afraid you'll be lucky to see it on TV - Queen or no Queen.
I hope I'm wrong though, after all, it isn't [i:5c56a5fc62]our skating body[/i:5c56a5fc62] who's organising it, so maybe we'll get it on TV after all!!!
I have seats in the 5th row - can't wait!

melanieuk...you lucky devil!!!
You do realize that if it isn't aired on TV, you'll have a whole lot of people bugging you for your report!
umm...actually we'll want that report even if it is aired.

I'm going too ! :D
I think there is a good chance that it will be televised. The BBC still seems to think that skating revolves around T&D ! So if they are involved with the event the BBC may take notice
They did show coverage of Robin Cousins "Skate For Life" Gala
back in '93 , so it's about time they gave us another special skating show!

So what do you wear?
Something pink and glittery (to be spotted on TV)
Or dark and unassuming (to go unnoticed in the crowd)
???
Warm or cold?

8O - never thought of that! Guess we should make an effort .... sorry, guess I should make an effort and NOT wear my mandatory track pants and sweatshirt! I, personally think black tie and ballgowns (snarf snarf :P ). UNFORTUNATELY I don't think that this is the time to debut my posh FM shoes .... totally beautiful, totally impractical and with nothing to go with them ....... oh well, one day .......

Any word on whether this will be televised? In the UK? In the US (unlikely :()?
I am flying over from Boston just to attend! My sister lives in London, and got us tickets! I am so excited!
I hope we can arrange to meet up somehow...maybe pick a spot to find each other at the interval (intermission) or beforehand or after? Does anyone know the arena, to name a spot?

Don't expect to see the gala on BBC
I've had an email back from them - some brief quotes-
"We will not be broadcasting the Jubilee Gala in July. "
"A number of major events take place at the same time and make it impossible for us to schedule coverage that will satisfy all the main audience groups"
"We try to give a wide range of sporting activities as much airtime as we can" (They might as well have added that skating is at the back of the queue as far as they are concerned !!)
" I recognise your remarks that this event is a show which could form part of our entertainment schedule as opposed to our sports schedule. Your interest has been registered"
Yeah right ! And then totally ignored as usual :x
Okay , I will pester the other channels then !

No why does that not surprise me.
I wonder what our international visitors will think of non TV coverage in presence of the Queen etc.

If this show is televised in the UK our PBS stations will likely show it. I HOPE so! Sasha is my favorite and Kristi is always a class act. Wouldn't it be a kick if Sasha met Prince William? Hey, she sat next to President Bush at the Olympics. It could happen.
