The first international outing of the season for many of the eligible skating world's hopefuls was a competition representative of youth and vigour and many fresh faces.

Italy's Carolina Kostner, a relative newcomer to the international scene, defeated several more experienced skaters including Finland's veteran Alisa Drei, Russia's up-and-comer Ludmilla Nelidina and the U.S. skater Amber Corwin to win her second gold medal of the season. Skating a polished free program to music from such film classics as "Yentl", "Far And Away" and "Schindler's List", Kostner established herself as a skater to watch this season by defeating her more experienced competitors and should be a force to reckon with at this year's World Junior Championships and Italian National Championships.
