Blech, what a lackluster competition today.

How did Kimmie do? I had taped the event, but it apparently went long, which I have never seen happen in the past. So, I missed her skate, which is one of them I wanted to see.

I believe she popped her triple axel, and so did Mao. Actually Mao only did a double and fell on it. I think Kimmie fell on a different jump too but I'm not sure.

And she fell on her triple triple combo. I loved Kimmie and Mao's new dress though! Very pretty!.... It was nice to see there new programs for the year.

Kimmie's music is audience-friendlier this year. The whole program is still zzz, but it's early in the season, so it might improve later. She did 3ltz-3toe axel, popped 3axel attempt (landed nice one in warm-up), 3flip-3toe axel (fell on the toe axel landing), 3loop with her characteristic wide swinging arm on landing, popped 3ltz, 2xl-2toe-2lp. Spiral positions were adequate; Suprisingly neither Dick nor Peggy said anything about it. She did a catch-foot back camel on an inside edge that was sort of fugly; I hope she'll take it out instead of putting it in just to get points.

I wasn't impressed with Mao's program either but again it's early in the season. Nasty spill on a 3axel attempt (How in the world did she ever land a 3axel with that technique? Not sure the technique will hold as she gets older and taller), 2xl-3toe, 3flip-3loop (nice!), 2xl, 3flip, 3lp-2lp-2lp, 3ltz. No 3sal. Mao has a light style over the ice, but it didn't look like she related to the music at all; Maybe she'll learn that as she gets older, maybe not.

So far, two thumb downs from me on the above two programs from Lori Nichol.

The only sort of exciting program was the Schez short from Ando. The opening and ending SLF were very powerful. I was impressed that her steps and speed in the SLF went with the music, and she was doing a lot of turns and wide curve in both directions. It has been a long time since I liked any SLF done by Morozov. I didn't like the middle music selection choice that much. If only Ando can do something with her spiral positions, which is somewhat hideous, then she'll be right up there with the top ladies.

I like it. It's not oh-my-God amazing, but I think she's going in the right direction.

So I wasn't the only one to not get all of Kimmie's program taped. Well, I tape direct to DVD from Satilite. I liked her dress but missed her program even though I had 2 hours and 4 minutes to record Campbells. ABC had way too many commercials. I should have cut the commercials by pausing the recording from the beginning. This is one reason I am glad to live in Canada and able to record skating from CBC and CTV; less commercials.

Don't know how I'm going to tape Worlds though because I'll be away from home competing at Adult Canadians the same week as Worlds.

My impressions:

*Loved Johnny! His new look and style is sooooo cool.

*I have never seen Mao skate (I missed the GPF she won) and I was not impressed at all by seeing her here. She skates like a sub-par Junior skater. No connection to the music at all. I wonder if it is her growth over the summer? Was she a ton better at the GPF??

*Oda is going to be a huge threat this year, I can feel it. He seems to have a complete package, even though he needs to make it a bit tighter.

*Does anyone think Emily Hughes will get it together? She seems to make a mistake in every performance, ala Sasha.

*I Love Sasha, but has she ever done a REAL 3Lutz???

I'm not convinced Scott Smith will stand 3rd at Nationals this year. His skating is zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. He always skate his entire free program in one slow tempo, regardless if the music is fast or slow. He skates as if he's afraid of falling. There's no speed or attack in his performance. I'm really suprised Mark Mitchell gave Scott such a bland program.

The skating itself went overtime. Guess they just didn't correctly estimate how long the judging would take--in the actual arena, I think Kimmie was still skating at 3:15. (Bonus to the TV networks of the new system: it takes longer to judge, thus more time for $commercials$ and goofy fluff pieces.)
