Glad to see Gregory & Petukhov in the top 3 in their first international competition together! I wish we could see how the ordinals came out between the top 4. Oh well.

I'd be curious to see the scores too. Belova & Isaev haven't been top international competitors in the past so I'm a little surprised to see them in the mix with Faiella & Scali and Fraser & Lukanin. I'm not as surprised about Gregory & Petukhov given Petukhov's past international record, but this is still a really nice showing for them. It would be great to see them hang on for a medal.

Good for Katie and Garrett! I will be anxious to see how the marks turned out. I was nervous for them after Indy but I guess they are back on track! Glad to see Spielberg and Joeright in the fray also!

Great result for Marcoux & Buntin seeing as though they've only been together for about a month and half or two months and this is their first EVER competition together. Buntin's always been one of my favs so I'm happy. :) And beating O&S in the SP should be a confidence booster for them going into Skate Canada.

BTW, I wonder if Fedor medals here and places well at Finlandia if SC will give him a GP assignment.

BTW, I can't believe Germany, home of ICECALC, does not have detailed marks up yet!!!

Is there anywhere that actually shows the marks (as opposed to only the placements)???

That is a really excellent showing for Marcoux & Buntin.

And not bad at all for Katie and Garrett and the other U.S. teams, either! I can't wait to see how the long turns out. :)

As part of the new system of 14 judges/9 count, I doubt we will be seeing marks or ordinals anymore. Maybe someone who was there will post marks, but from what I understand they will only show marks in ascending order to the live audience, one row for each set, so you'll never be able to tell which tech mark goes with which pres mark to add up and determine placements, let alone figure out which 9 counted.

I don't think I am going to like this new scoring system if all they are going to post is placements. This really makes the scoring too secretive in that we will not be able to evaluate the closeness of a competition unless we all had the good fortune of being there. Shucks!

What happened to Trifun? In this field, he should be doing way better than 11th place.

Pairs final results have the exact same standings as the short! Orscher/Lucash = 3rd!; SpielbergJoeright, 5th; Quigley/Cording 6th. A special congrats to the Canadians! Good show. Hooray for Katie and Garrett-I wonder what this will mean for them as far as other international assignments?

Wow, great job for Marcoux & Buntin! Although I can't say I'm surprised--after all, Marcoux & Marcotte won the Nebelhorn their first year together and that was Valerie's first year skating pairs. I expect that M&B will be a better matched pair than M&M were, though, since they've both had a few years of training with Paul Wirtz.

Let's hope Skate Canada can find some GP assignments for them. It sounds like the Wirtzes' comeback is almost definite, so it will be a tough decision unless some extra invitations pop up.

Marcoux & Buntin, according to the SC and ISU sites, have been assigned to SC. I hope another assignment opens up for them.

:) Hi, Does anyone know which Compulsory Dance it was?
I wonder if it was the new Midnight Blues?

BTW, ITA with previous comments about the new scoring system, it's baffling, far too secretive, and has taken some of the pleasure out of seeing how close 5/4 decisions panned out! {JMHO!} :D

There's no change at all to the order after the Original Dance.;)

BTW, GOOD LUCK to Jenna McCorkell in the FP, she's lying 5th after the SP in her first ever senior competition. :D

No, it was the Austrian Waltz. Someone who attended the event posted at the German skating mailing list that nearly all the teams had problems with this Compulsory Dance and that there hardly was any really good skate. Apparantly Gregory & Petukhov fell at the end of their CD performance.

In the men's short program Davydov had an unclean landing during his 3a/3t combination and Fedor fell on the 3-lutz.

That's all further information about the event that I could find so far.

Yes, but it's a YahooGroups list and you need to have a Yahoo ID plus be a member of the list in order to read the messages.

But anyway the link is:

WOW! Trifun really moved up! Good for him. I'm glad he's skating this year. Can't wait to see him at Worlds.

Third is also a decent result for Fedor, given how well he *hasn't* been skating the past couple years in competition. At least this will get him some ISU World Ranking points.

haribobo
09-06-2002, 07:33 PM
The stupid ISU rankings only give like 60 points for winning Nebelhorn in men, and only like 20 in pairs. So this won't move Fedor very far--he's still only 74th after he gets his 42 points for the bronze. I guess the key is getting to the GP and 4CC...They really don't give out enough points for this competition.

Erin F
09-06-2002, 09:05 PM
haribobo - Have they changed how points are awarded for Nebelhorn? Because Sergei Davydov got 180 points for winning last year's Nebelhorn (and silver medalist Jeff Buttle got 126 points).

I'd disagree that the minor internationals don't help at all--I remember being surprised that Buttle was ranked ahead of Johnny Weir mid-way through last season, and it turned out it was the minor internationals that did it.

haribobo
09-07-2002, 05:31 AM
They seem to be awarding far fewer points this year. You can see how many points the winners got if you look at Davydov, Andreev, and Ben Miller's rankings on the isu ranking page. It's possible that *strength of field* affects how many points are awarded? Not sure exactly how it all works.

I think the answer is in this section of the World Rankings policy (rules?):.3 The amount of points to score for each competitor/couple depends on

2.3.1 the final placement

2.3.2 the total amount of points designated for that particular event and this:2.6 Available points per event:

2.6.1 ISU Championships with a set amount of total points

2.6.2 ISU Grand Prix events (Junior and Senior) and International Calendar Senior Competitions with a variable amount of points. The total amount of points is the sum of the individual total points of the participating skaters per discipline. In case the total amount of points the skaters bring into the event is less than the minimum amount of points as set, this minimum must be taken into consideration. and 5.4 International Calendar Competitions (senior)

5.4.1 The individual amount of points per skater/couple are based on the highest number of points this skater/couple gained in an ISU Figure Skating Championship of the previous season (as to 5.2.1).

At the time of the first draw of the discipline concerned the individual points of each competitor/couple, who participates in the draw, will be added to a total, which represents the total score of that discipline. If this total score is less than the minimum amount of points as to 5.2.1, the minimum amount of points will be considered.

5.4.2

10% of the total amount per discipline (total score) will be awarded Of which the following places will participate:

1st place 40 %
2nd place 33 %
3rd place 27 %

5.4.3 decimal points will be rounded up. Given that it's usually lower-ranked skaters competing at events like Nebelhorn and this formula of calculating points to be awarded, I guess it's not surprising to see the low totals awarded here. Totals for events like the one Michelle Currie won last season would be higher because it was the final Oly qualifying event and it would appear a larger number of higher-ranked skaters participated from some countries.

Thanks Lee and haribobo...I knew there was strength of field involved in the calculations, but I hadn't realized that the field was that much weaker this year.

So I agree - let's hope Fedor makes it to 4CC this year to bump his ranking up!

Great to see Gregory & Petukhov move up to take the silver medal! Hopefully this result gets them another GP assignment in addition to the Skate Canada assignment they already have. I'm assuming that if it does happen, it will be Skate America since the other events are all filled up.
