Were did the name "Freestyle" come from?

Say, I was just thinking yesterday about this. Does anyone know were the term "Freestyle" origanated from? As far as levels go? FS.1,2,3,4, etc.? Can someone please help me solve this? Thanks.

"Freestyle" is an incorrect term in figureskating. The correct term is "Free Skating." The "FS" in front of the numbers is used in ISI testing and in the USFSA Basic Skills Badge program to designate the skills as "Free Skating" or "Figure Skating." Both programs also run programs for Hockey as well.
