Please summarize, as the LA Times site requires a memberhship, or is that against forum rules?

It only has a short sentence saying that she has resumed training with John Nicks in Aliso Viejo.

AA2, the membership may be free but they ask for way too much personal information IMHO. All I'm willing to give at any site is my name and email address.

I don't know what all information they ask for, but can't you fudge it? I have a short list of false information that I always enter on forms like that, so I can get what I want without getting what I don't (spam, etc).

The piece on NNN is very small part of an article on Olympic sports. Here's the whole thing:

"In other news, Naomi Nari Nam of Irvine resumed training with Nicks in Aliso Viejo after a serious hip injury."

I hope NNN will be able to go to Nationals and does well enough to medal.

I think it's more realistic to hope that Nam can compete at Southwestern Pacific Regionals (first qualifying competition for Nationals) in early October. If she is able to show up and skate there, that would a great accomplishment for her, regardless of how she places.

It will be nice to see her skate again. She's so talented and her presence has been missed.

stick a fork in her, she is done. She should just try and condition her hip, she is going to need it for quite a long time. She does not want a hip replacement at age 20

That was rather mean spirited to say the least, especially for a skater who is nursing an injury. Perhaps you could find a better way to say this in the future. ~adrianchew~

maybe so, but I really would hate to see her destroy her hip......... I mean do you really think that she will be able to do the skills she did before? Did she ever even train a tripple lutz? I don't think so . Did she have a consistent tripple flip? I saw her do one and she almost knocked her self silly. In many ways, I feel sorry for the kid, she was way overhyped, she was overscored, and she had major sponsors at a young age........ I would love to see her make a big comeback, but I just do not see it happening. Maybe she will take up ice dancing..... I just do not see her hitting tripple jumps again........ I think that she should embrace a coaching career or a pro tour..........

Yes, and she attempted it in competition, too. I think the best she ever did was two foot it, however.

I saw Naomi landing a lutz in 1999 but not consistantly enough for Mr. Nicks to let her try it in competition. She did do it in 2000, but not perfectly. I agree though that this injury sounds like it should be a sign for her to turn in a different direction.

Naomi is another example of why I like the lower levels of skating so much. When you watch an Intermedaite skater, or a novice or Junior, you may be seeing the highest level of performance they will ever give. If I waited for everyone to become a Senior, I would surely miss a lot of wonderful skating. I saw Naomi several times as a novice and junior; when she was carefree and having a ball. I'm so glad I did.

I can't imagine NNN being competitive again at the National level with her hip problems. I love triple jumps, I admit it, but she is one of the few skaters who I can totally enjoy without them. I'd love to see her in COI. Even with all the jump problems in the LP she skated at Nationals in 2001 (?), I found myself rewatching her performance more than any of the other skaters. Her energy brought a smile to my face.

I agree! Many of these skaters still exhibit true exuberance in their skating. And the little juveniles so often do too. This is one of the things that keeps me interested in skating.

Talk about exuberance, I just watched 1999 U.S. Nationals on tape, Naomi was so great in that. She was the highlight of that competition; hearing Dick Button and Peggy Fleming gushed about her spirals, spins, the magnificant layback spin, and her jumps had so much power and lift.

Me too. I often watch Naomi's 1999 Nationals LP, in particular. If that were all she ever did, then she still brought a lot of joy and inspiration to me, and I feel sure a whole lot of people!

I wish her the best, and also I hope she takes very good care of her body.

What do you have to do to go Pro? If Ameteur doens't go too great for her, she could try that.

She was a joy to watch--that's enough for me. I wish her good health and happiness, and if that includes skating, then lucky us.

However, all you have to do is "say you are a pro" or skate in an non ISU sanctioned competition, and ZAPPO you are a pro, undoubtedly earning less than when you were an amateur!
