View Full Version : NY Times Article on Skating Styles
They panned competitive skating attire! (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/29/fashion/thursdaystyles/29skating.html) Not that we all haven't been doing that ourselves. There are some pretty obvious bloopers in this article, and I'm sure the only reason they ran it is the upcoming Winter Olympics.

I particularly loved the title "Routine is a 6, Outfit a 0". Have they not heard of COP?
How about "Boot covers that blend in with the hosiery"? Have they no eyes? OTB tights, clear as day in their own pix. Then there is "the Olympic hopeful Sarah Hughes" a scant few paragraphs after talking about her gold medal winning performance at the 2002 Olys. Still, nice to see anything about figure skating in the NYT.

They managed to pick out the one ugly dress Cohen wore, but they couldn't get a photo of one of the Harding slit-slut spectacles? And why bring Bobek into the mix at all? She was never the worst dressed, that's for sure...
Yes, there were way too many errors to give this article any credibility, except for the part about the suntan colored tights. Don't most elite skaters have a brand that matches their skin tone? I don't remember noticing the off-colored tights so much in past seasons.

I was wondering why bring Bobek into it at all. She isn't an elite skater these days; this is like comparing the fashions of 1994 and blasting them in 2005. Nor is Kerrigan. Her costumes had plenty of sparkles; not the white one, but her long program in Lillehammer was all gold, sparkly, with sheer sleeves.
Plus, while some people's costumes are a bit loony (swan heads have GOT to go), they're generally not the puffy-sleeved atrocities of 15 years ago.
This had the feel of an old article that got a Sasha and Michelle feature tacked on at the end.

I really like Sasha's yellow dress, and I remember it fitting the piece really well. And she's hardly the biggest offender in the weird costume department (evil swan costume aside) at all, so yeah, it did feel like the picture was tacked on to the lead of the article (and they kept coming back to the 'boot covers') just to look current, and Michelle was mentioned just to make it look like an Olympic year or something.
But Bobek, and Hughes? And Hamilton? I mean, sure, ask the vets for their perspective but your average figure skater is probably a little closer to Lysacek's costumes that a red and blue spandex bodysuit.

Personally, I mostly dispise what is considered "stylish" in America these days.

I've never liked the look of yellow fabric on ice - the blue tint they put in the ice gives the yellow a very nasty 'glow'. Yellow is also not a very flattering color to most skin tones. So, yes, that one yellow dress Cohen wore I consider ugly.
Kerrigan also had a weird day-glo color dress, wasn't it a lime green one?
