I know I'm being naive, but what's the Olympic qualification criteria?

I thought any country that wanted to send an athlete could just register.
Oh wait, that was a Disney movie about the Jamaican Bobsled Team.
Guess real life isn't that simple...

The article outlines the placing requirements, & it varies w/ discipline--one is top 3, I think dance is top 5.....
