Thanks Janet!

Interesting to see some of the names that are still around--Mira Leung (2nd in Sr Ladies) was highly touted by Louis Stong about 3 or 4 years ago and I thought she'd retired long ago. By my calculations, she's only about 13 or 14, so she still may end up with a strong career ahead of her. Also a surprise to see Annie Laurie finish second in Jr Ladies--I saw her skate Novice pairs with her brother a few years ago and was unimpressed, but she's clearly come a long way.

Unfortunately, it looks like it was not a good outing for Amanda Billings. I was hoping she'd get a JGP assignment, but it's not looking good now.

Any reports would be appreciated!

I was there on Saturday and didn't stick around for the junior ladies results, but I thought for sure Billings finished second to Lee in the SP. Guess not! She was the only one in the field to land a triple lutz. She did step out of the DA though and finished slightly behind the music. Lee landed her 3T-2T combo but barely eeked out the 2T on the back end (it wasn't pretty) and she did a double lutz out of footwork. Laurin Henderson (3sal-2T, DA and 2Z) and Annie Laurie (3T-2T, DA and 2Z) were clean IIRC but I assumed the judges would have rewarded Billings' higher base mark.

I still think Billings might be in line for a JGP assignment because she is attempting the triple lutz which is a big plus on the JGP circuit. She has got to be one of few junior ladies in Canada who's doing the lutz (Hjordis Lee certainly doesn't have one and she was given a JGP).

BTW, I wondered if Billings hadn't been skating that long. Definitely injured lately as she skated with a blue cast on her arm on Saturday.

Marijane Stong was there monitoring BTW.

A couple of things - Mira Leung, who competed in senior ladies, is apparently still just 12 (yes, it seems like a long time ago that she was being highly touted, but she was only 10 in 2000). She had a great short program, and a pretty good long (but a few 2-foots). She has all the content (through 3Z), and lots of speed. Still skates young, but her jumps, which used to be tiny and cheated, are now real jumps. We were actually somewhat surprised that she didn't win the SP (she ended up third, with a very split panel). She had been struggling for the last couple of years, but on the basis of this outing, is now on the right track. She was really the surprise of the weekend.

Amanda Billings did not have a good jump weekend, but as Tulip noted the cast on her arm could not have helped, and other than the missed jumps, she skated well (and she has shown herself capable of competing in the past). She was fourth in both short and long. Hjordis was easily the winner in the LP.
