I took notes on the intermediate pairs and I might post some at a later date (it's getting late), but I do have to note how impressed I was with Strong & Westfeld. They really were in a class by themselves here and easily could have fit in at the novice level IMO. They had sbs 2z with turns into 2s, a throw 2axel, throw 2loop, sbs 2loops. It was a medly including Puttin on the Ritz. Good job! :)

Novice Pairs Short Program:

Namiotka & Merritt: split 2twist, standard overhead (2 ½ turns), ftwk into 2z, sbs camel/sit, circular ftwk, RFI death spiral, pair spin ( 2 positions - 8 total?).

Schmidt & Pottenger: good overhead (2 ½ turns with nice speed and ice coverage), split 2twist, camel/sit(10 total), straightline ftwk, sbs 2z(she one turn and then opened up and landed on 2feet), pair spin, RFI death spiral. Skated to Last of the Mohicans. I really thought they ran away with this competition, even with the sbs jump mistake.

Thomas & Al-Zubi: split twist, sbs 2z, sbs camel/sit (10 - off at the end), positions not quite matched in the straightline ftwk, lift (2 ½ or 3 turns), RFI death , pair spin (1 position - 5).

Eison & Eison: split 2twist, sbs 2z (she 2ft), standard overhead (2 ½), RFI death spiral, sbs flying camels/back sit (10), straightline ftwk, pair spin (2positions with enough revs). Vanessa Mae’s Toccata Fug

Seitz & Seitz: split 2twist, sbs 2z, standard overhead lift with good ice coverage (2 ½), circular ftwk, flying camel(7), RFI death spiral, pair spin (4 at most). Their music was an upbeat/up tempo piece.

Miller & Hess: split 2twist (high but out of control a bit - she too far out from him on landing), sbs 2z, standard overhead (2 ½ - turns labored), sbs flying camels into back upright variation, circular ftwk (not closed off), RFI death spiral, pair spin (2 positions - 5). Skated to Malaguena.

Krein & Jorgens: overhead (2 ½), 2z (he X), came/sit (off & on at points), circular ftwk (closed off?), pair spin(8), split 2twist, RFI death spiral.

Buttler & Jacobsen: came/sit (unison was a bit shaky), lift (2 ½), split 2twist (somewhat shaky landing), sbs 2z(he just hung on), straightline ftwk (not to end and curved), RFI death spiral, pair spin (total required revs).

Results:
1)Schmidt & Pottenger (As I said, they ran away with this competition - the class of the field)
2)Namiotka & Merritt
2)Seitz & Seitz (one of the judges gave the exact same scores to both N&M and S&S which seems strange)
4)Eison & Eison
5)Butler & Jacobsen
6)Miller & Hess
7)Thomas & Al-Zubi
8)Krein & Jorgens

Junior Pairs Short Program:

Varraux & Pelletier: (Big Bad Voo Doo Daddy), lift with 3 ½ turns - speed out of could have been better, small split 2twist, throw 2loop, sbs ftwk into 2z, came/sit/back cross foot sit spin, serp spirals (good expression - got a laugh out of the crowd) back spiral into pair spin, FI death spiral (clockwise).

Gallagher & Coughlin: Big Band Music - 3 ½ lift, sbs 2z(she small, but squeaked out), throw 2loop, circ spirals, off on the sbs spins, split 2twist, death spiral, 2 positions? (9 or 10?).

Rigoulot & Livi: high split 2twist (he a bit scratchy while she was up in the air), sbs 2z, camel/sit/back sit, throw 2loop, lift with change of position (3 turns), serp spirals, death spiral right into pair spin (rough changes, centering and speed).

Howerton & Pottenger: RFI death , smooth spirals (serp), throw 2loop, split 2twist (switch to one foot quickly), camel/upright variation/back sit (6 on front/8 on back), lift (2 ½ ? Turns), sbs 2z to end the program.

Castile & Okolski: camel/upright variation (8 total?), 2 ½ turns on lift that was easily performed, split 2tist, high throw 2loop, sbs 2z(both stumbled out), pair spin, spirals (serp). Their program was to the “Godfather” and was interpreted pretty well.

Harris & Sanders: nice serp spirals (he has a nice/pleasant “long” extension in them), sbs 2z, great lift (3 turns) with flip over dismount, death spiral RFI, unison good on the forward sbs spin (9) but off on the back part (approx. 5), throw 2loop, split 2twist, pair spin (10).

Yount & Marron: 2 ½ lift, split 2twist, sbs 2z, sbs spins were off, death spiral, throw 2loop, serp spirals, pair spin (6 total?).

Uhlig & Loomis: pair spin (nice back camels), lift (3 turns - nice speed and smooth), split 2twist, sbs spins off on forward and on on the back part (6 on back), throw loop, sbs 2z (she forward with hand down), serp spirals, RFI death spiral. Skated to The Swan that Oksana Baiul is famous for.

Boxwell & Sears: split 2twist, sbs 2z, lift in a layover star position with a switch to one hand that had good speed and ice coverage (3 turns), death spiral, camel(5)/back sit(7 - nicely done), throw 2loop, circ spirals (a bit slow), pair spin (3 changes of position).

Results:
1)Howerton & Pottenger (all first place ordinals)
2)Harris & Sanders (3, 3, 2, 3, 2)
3)Boxwell & Sears (4, 2, 5, 2, 4)
4)Varraux & Pelletier (2, 4, 4, 6, 6)
5)Uhlig & Loomis
6)Castile & Okolski
7)Rigoulot & Livi
8)Gallagher & Coughlin
9)Yount & Marron

Senior Pairs Short Program:

Inoue & Baldwin: split 2twist, 3t (apparently he popped his to a double - I missed it though), throw 3s, lift (3 turns), outside edge camel (9)/back spin (8), serp spirals (includes the change edge spiral I mentioned yesterday), pair spin, RFI death spiral.

Evora & Ladwig: sbs 3s(tight but I think clean), split 2twist, throw 2s( step out - was to be a triple), lift (3), sbs spins that went off but got back on, circ spirals, death spiral, pair spin (8 total).

Hinzmann & Hartsell: sbs 3t(he low landing and hung on by the toe pick - she doubled), split 2twist, throw 3s(hand down), pair spin (8), camel/sit(8)/back sit(7), circ spirals, lift (3 turns), RFI death spiral.

Orscher & Lucash: split 2twist (good height), sbs 3t (2ft from him?), throw 3s, camel/sit/back sit (8 total - off then on), circ spirals, lift (2 or 2 ½ turns - pretty rough, especially the dismount), death spiral, pair spin.

Don & Hunt: (Rachmaninoff) sbs 3t, split 2twist, RFI death spiral, circ spirals, one of them clipped the boards with their skate while stroking by at this point, throw 3s, sbs spins had decent unison except for the exit, lift (2 or 2 ½ turns? - dismount needs more work to make it more smooth), pair spin (rough transitions and traveling). Despite some shaky elements towards the end, I was really impressed with them. They match up extremely well together IMO. Their stroking looks similar and they seem to be working well together. They’re still a bit wild (almost a bit out of control at points) on the ice, but they look to be promising team.

McInerny & Jorgans: split 2twist ( a bit of a collision on catch), sbs 3s(she under and 2ft, he 2ft?), pair spin (9), throw 3toe that was singled, decent unison on camel/sit/back sit, lift in a layover star position and a switch to one hand - 3 turns), RFI death spiral.

Phibbs & Patrick: split 2twist (a bit of a crash on the set down), sbs 2a (she stepped out), camel/sit(9)/back sit(8), throw 3s( hand down), circular spirals (a bit shallow?), lift in a layover star position to another position with an “acrobatic type” exit that was rough (transitions also a bit rough), death spiral, pair spin.

Results:
1)Inoue & Baldwin (2, 1, 1, 2, 1)
2)Orscher & Lucash (1, 2, 4, 1, 3)
3)Don & Hunt (3, 3, 2, 3, 2)
4)Hinzmann & Hartsell (4, 4, 3, 4, 4)
5)Evora & Ladwig
6)Phibbs & Patrick
7)McInerny & Jorgans

I couldn’t decide if I’d put O&L or D&H in 2nd, so I don’t have any major qualms.

Everyone seemed to agree that the Junior Pairs were an exciting group to watch.
The senior pair teams lacked the smiles and spark of the younger teams.

In the Junior event, Howerton and Pottenger were very polished, and had the best death spiral, with great finesse and control by Pottenger
He also is able to do more than just stand there on 2 skates while throwing Howerton...he does great positions.
Uhlig-Loomis looked much stronger than I expected. A team where the girl just amazes me with her tiny size and huge determination.
In terms of artistry I felt the bset presentation was the team of Tatiana Koonchoo and Manny Gardner.I love their style, their posture, their ability to interpret music instead of just stroke and jump. More of our teams need to show some sense of music...there were too many super serious or blank expressions. this team reminded me of the kind of complexity we see in freedances, with the music being much more than just background.
Boxwell-Sears have a nice look, and again, he is impressive in terms of displaying his own style.
The senior pair teams showed less originality, less personality.
Junior Pairs, and Novice FreeDance were the best events.
If this was the selection site for dance, as well as Pairs, this centrally located, extremely people friendly location would be the best competition of the year outside of Nationals!
You can park your car and never drive again for a week, walk a block or two to a huge variety of hotels and restaurants, enjoy the big plaza outside during the zamboni runs, and watch hours of the best kind of skating at higher levels than we usually get to enjoy, and every practice and event taking place at wonderful normal times ...congrats to everyone involved, and to all the skaters who participated with tremendous heart and dedication...it was great!!!

I completely agree! I too was extremely impressed with the musical expression of this team. I mentioned in the other thread I started that I immediately thought of him as an ice dancer because of his musical expression. She was great as well, but he was definitely the one you watched in the pair IMO.

I very much agree! I love the location of this event. It was nice being able to walk 2 blocks to the mall, find cheap parking ($1 - $2 in the mall parking garage right across the street from the Pan-Am Plaza), and LOTS of restaurants. Plus, the Crown Plaza is located right next to the Pan-Am plaza which makes it extremely convenient for the skaters to go back and forth. I think the only problem was that the ice on the Olympic rink was rather soft and wet (I heard Luddington telling Don & Hunt to be careful during the Sunday morning practice session). Boy would I love to have the international qualifying dance event here as well! :D

I've said it before, but I'm disappointed Indy didn't put in a bid for the 2006 Nationals. As you can tell, everything is soooo conveniently located (the Conseco Fieldhouse for the main arena was just a few blocks to the east and north of the Pan-Am plaza).
