So we're back after a lot better journey than sometimes - the motorway really wasn't as busy as we'd expected. And we've had a great time - it's a more solemn & serious affair than the US Adult Nationals, but still fun.

Sadly, this year (Max, we missed you!), there was no kiss-n-cry, no welcoming banners, no flowers-and-teddies stall, and no flower-girls (we had to pick up our own stuffed animals!), but the event was well-organised, if rather rushed. Even though both days ran very early, we were still rushed on to the ice as though we were trying to catch up a serious delay. And many of the dancers hope that next year, they will put all the compulsory dances (both solo & couples) on the Saturday, and then all the free dances on the Sunday, so that the dancers will have to stay overnight and if the free skating is on the Sunday, too, then the free skaters might come up on the Saturday night and the party be better-attended. It was an okay party, but not enough of us came.

But such minor niggles aside, we had a great time. We were bitterly disappointed to still finish 4th overall - but delighted that we were infinitely closer to our opposition than we've ever been! In fact, one judge even gave us our first-ever 1st-place ordinal in the Golden Skaters' Waltz. The placements were all over the place, except in the Riverside Rhumba, where we made a mistake on one step - and with opposition that close, that was disaster! We did still get one 3rd-place ordinal, though. Our friends from our rink were 2nd in both compulsory dances, Other Woman and her Husband were 1st in one and 3rd in the other, and the Scottish couple were the reverse. Then, in the free dance, the Scottish couple walked it, as expected - they are about the same level as us in the compulsories, but a great deal better in the free; and although we'd hoped we'd finish ahead of our friends from our rink, someone had helped them overcome their nerves, and they skated at least 500% better than they had when we all did our final practice at home 24 hours earlier! We ended up with 2 3rd place ordinals and 1 4th, sadly, not good enough for the 3rd place we'd hoped for. Ah well.... I was disappointed, but still thrilled with that 1st place mark!

In other news, Batikat skated brilliantly for a Bronze medal, and Samba for a Silver in the older age group (Other Woman skated as well as she did in Oberstdorf, where, if you remember, she got Bronze, and cheered by Mr Cinquanta) and deservedly took that class. 2Loop2Loop - now, brilliantly, Doctor 2Loop2Loop - wasn't skating but was there to put some friends on the ice.

One very splendid thing happened in one class - the youngest Intermediate free skaters, I think. We knew before the class was skated who would take the podium, but not in what order - and nor did the judges, who couldn't choose between the three skaters, and gave them all first place!

On the Saturday evening that was an on-ice class with Jimmy Young, which we did (oh, but I'm so stiff!), and learnt a lot. And there was an off-ice salsa class, which we didn't do, but went and sat in the bar and had a drink until it was time for the supper party which, as I've already said, not enough people went to, but was fun nevertheless.

Today was devoted to solo dance, and very good it was too. We were glad to be able to spend the day watching, although Husband has now acquired a 3rd partner for the final competition of the season, as neither Other Woman nor I will skate the Hickory Hoedown! And so it goes....

Eee, I can't wait for them to tell us what next year's dances will be!

Edited to put the parenthesis in the right place!

Isn't it divine to get a first place ordinal?! Congratulations. I know it's disappointing to finish last, but you & Robert have really come a long way, and we all celebrate that with you!

I will second that one, you most certainly have improved and of course Annabel gets thinner every time I see her, maybe she turned sideways and the judges couldnt see her!!

Great to see you and all the others again Annabel, sorry I didnt get much time to chat, kept loosing everyone and I wanted to get a photo of you and Robert, ah well, next time, I dont think we even had an official photographer did we? But at least those with top 3 placings got a medal to actually take home and not have it forwarded in the post, I think the people at work thought I was having them on last year. I will send you a PM when I get back from work tonight.

Cheers
Grace

Congratulations Annabel & Robert on getting that first place ordinal -and I thought your Free dance was much better than last years as you moved faster and loooked more confident so you are definitely going the right way. I'm afraid I didnt' see the couples compulsories as I was busy eating after my skate ( I can't eat before at all so I was starving!). Annabel you can't have been eating at all you looked so slim.

I missed Samba's skate too  but it must have been a good one so that's OK. It was nice to meet 2Loop2Loop too but he must have been too busy becoming a doctor (congrats by the way!) to skate for us so didnt' get to see that 2Loop or watch him do anything interesting with hats!

I had a much better skate than I expected to since it was only my 3rd ever Freeskating comp and my first time in the Freeskating at the Championships. It must have looked better than it felt (or perhaps it was the big smile at the judges in the middle of the step sequence!) and it was a real thrill to be on that podium for a bronze medal -even though it was slippery and I nearly slid straight off!

I enjoyed watching the solo dance but I won't skate in solo dance competitions again, until they reinstate the age split (or I reach 50 whichever is sooner) as the younger category age group was 25 - 49 and it was a ridiculously tough class for an adult skater who learnt as an adult. Some of the youngsters in the class had skated as children or teenagers or were high level freeskaters changing to dance and one of whom was also a coach.

We too missed the wonderful atmosphere of last year provided by the kiss n cry and the banners etc but still poor old Sheffield have had an awful lot of comps to run this year and they did an excellent job despite NISA's best efforts. The masterclass with Jimmy Young was really good and the buffet dinner a lovely idea - as Annabel says it was a pity it was so poorly supported this year but we enjoyed it.

Our trip home was more eventful as we got past Silverstone to find the pub we planned to eat at was full to bursting and short staffed so had stopped taking orders. Then we saw there were huge traffic jams on the M40. Luckily I had a map and we took a side road down to Oxford where my friend and I noticed a sign post to Summertown on the outskirts of Oxford and discovered that both of us knew it well as various family members had lived in student accomodation there. Also my friend remembered a very good Chinese restaurant so we had our meal there and very good it was too!

All in all a great weekend.

batikat -

A question. How were the age groups split in free skating this year? I mean, groups 1 & 2 - was it under/over 30 or 35? (All ladies looked so fabulous it was impossible to tell).

Hi Sceptique,

I think it was 21- 35 (category 1) and 36-49 (category 2) and then 50 and over (cat 3). Not totally sure. The younger age group is very tough as they are often continuing skaters from childhood or teens though it is still easier to learn to skate in your twenties and thirties than in your 40's! Would you still be category 1? I Expect to see you competing at BAC next year!

I'll be 33 next year, so it looks like category 1. I noticed that they were quite a tough bunch. But they didn't have quite as many people at elementary level as in category 2. Still, it's going to be hard work to place well next year. (yes, I'm definitely taking part!)

It sounds like you all had a great time and huge congrats to all those who came away with medals. I am so disappointed to have been unable to skate in this year's championships, but I will be back and hopefully will be injury-free for next year!

All in all a great weekend.Sorry to hear about the traffic jams - we were fine on the M1, which is normally awful - okay, the usual slowing down at junctions, but it kept moving, which is more than it did on the way up!

We weren't best pleased with our Free Dance - the spin went wrong, at least, Husband's did (from what I saw on the video, his free leg is all over the place - we only saw it on the integral screen, though) and at the end, we're supposed to turn in the lift, not stand still. One of the Advanced men told us what to work on for that, so that's on the agenda for tomorrow morning! But the rest of it went okay, and I'll be sorry to say goodbye to it after Oxford. But everyone will be sick of it if we keep it another year, including me, so we will have something new for next season.

Oh, and for once I saw us skating on video (again, only on the integral screen, but my daughter hopes to send us a CD of it) and didn't cringe! We actually looked reasonable..... long may it last!

Thanks Grace. It was particularly tough as I'm pretty sure I was in with a real chance of a medal this year. I'll be there next year though.

Well done Batikat, I will certainly look out for you next time, now I know what you look like, I should have given myself a bit more time to learn the programme but all considered I was pleased with what I did as I know I couldnt have done better under the circumstances and thats all that matters.

All in all a good day but yes the frills were definately missed although I did see at least one important person rolling his sleaves up, which was good to see.

Well done everyone that took part, see ya next year, including Nicki.

Cheers
