Hi
I'm not sure who else this DISORDER affects, but i've noticed that when you've beenon the ice for any more than a 1/2 hour, my nose starts to run. It's especially bad when I'm spinning. Does anyone know WHY this happens? Or what you can do to fix it?! (besides the obvious blowing your nose 100,000 times a session)
who else does this happen to?! am i all alone ?? lol

It's especially bad when you exit a spin - one skater I know pretends that she exits her spin with a graceful movement of her arm across her face.....
The pile of tissues rinkside is a normal phenomenon. And at least one skater I know always "forgets" her tissues, and has to have a time-out in her lesson to go and get some loo-paper - I bet she does it on purpose to give herself a breather!

I'm also a member of the runny nose club. Any zip up sweater I bring to the rink I make sure has pockets for my precious tissues.

This sounds gross, but I either stuff tissues in my bra for a runny nose, or I wear the wristbands that absorb sweat to wipe my runny nose. Better than getting it on my clothes, or worse on someone else, ew. I only tend to notice this when spinning though, or if it's really, really cold that day.

Yup! Mine runs like crazy! I try to remember to tuck a tissue into my glove or into my bottle holder (don't stick them in my pockets-they get washed). My coach said to never borrow any one else's gloves-they are often used as backup tissues! (gross!)

It must be the cold -- at the cold rink I skate at I always have a tissue for that inevitable clear runny snot. At the mall rink (where although the ice is cold and the place is air-conditioned, skating there you get hot) -- I almost never need a tissue!

This is pretty common...also known as "skier's nose." As for WHY this happens, most people I've talked to seem to think that it's the nose overreacting to the cold dry air. The fact that you're exercising also increases your body's blood circulation (even to your nose), and also increases your rate of nasal breathing. Or something like that. I'm no doctor, so don't take my word for it.
Anyway, if it's really bad, you can actually get a prescription nasal spray called Atrovent. Haven't used it myself, but I know a skier friend who swears by it.

Definitely not alone LOL. Yes it affects us all, and some more than others I believe. I seem to be over at the tissue box more than most, that is if i haven't shoved a couple into my gloves.
I also seem to have to blow my nose regularly when I'm out running, but the other ladies I run with never seem to have to. Not sure if it's habit or I have a more runnier nose than others.
Don't worry about it, just think of the benefits of it.... how many people can 'decongest' themselves as quick as a skater can when they have a cold. :D

My problem isn't my nose running, it's my eyes streaming! They do out-of-doors at this time of year, too, and so do my father's, so it's hereditary. But it's a nuisance to finish a competition with your mascara all down your face.... doesn't happen often, but it has been known!

I too have a nose that runs when I'm on the ice, and there are times when I have to dive to the barrier for a tissue following a spin. I daresay spinning is the worst for a runny nose!

Yes, it's the temperature differential between the cold air and your warm body that makes your nose run. I didn't figure that out until I noticed my nose always runs when I skate my program on the early morning freestyle session but never runs when I skate my program at a big competition (thank God!). It's because all the people in the building warm up the air temperature!

My problem isn't my nose running, it's my eyes streaming! I have BOTH problems!!! Especially if I have to go REALLY fast in my skating!!!

Time to do a "tear-jerker" interpretive program, LOL!
