It's hard to judge from your description (since I can't see what you mean by the extra leap). But perhaps you're underrotated and your body knows it, so it's putting in an extra leap to try to get that extra rotation? What does your coach say?

Do you mean once you have rotated the full jump, and landed then doing an extra bit off jump as you are not solid on your landing?
This could be because you are trying to hard and over rotating on the jump?
Try taking your time going in to the jump and also practising your landing position to get it solid, such as just gliding backwards and doing a wee leap to the position you should land in (not too fast mind!)
Also as the axel is the first jump over one rotation it could be that you are trying to spin round in the air too fast and once you have landed your body still wants to turn, some people do a back spin but I myself did tend to put an extra jump on as if I didnt I sometimes fell!!
If this is the problem you are having then you just need to focus on getting the correct rotations and a more solid base for the jump.
Hope this has been helpful
