I only saw one junior team as I got there after the first two junior practice sessions:
Varraux & Pelletier: Landed a number of sbs 2axels - mostly in good unison. Were close to landing the throw 3 salchow. In their run through they did: sbs 2a, throw 2s, sbs 2a(he single?) with turns into 2t, throw 2loop. I think part of their program might have been Casablanca and maybe Napoleon? Not sure though. They looked pretty good and their 2axels throughout the practice session were nicely done.
Senior Pairs Practice:
Phibbs & Patrick: In their run through, they did a split 2twist, omission of some stuff, throw 3salchow (hand down), and that was about it. Also in their practice, they landed sbs 2axels on the second try, throw 3salchow with free foot down after brief landing, a very nice combo spin, and a clean throw 3salchow. Skating to the “Four Seasons,” but I can’t remember if it was the short program or free skate.
Don & Hunt: Rocky start on the ice when he and Jennifer were power stroking forward and he tripped forward and fell, but he laughed it off. In their run through: sbs 3t(she 2t), split 2twist, she outside spread eagle into a death spiral, throw 2s, combo spin, lift. They look reasonably good together and had pretty good speed. She did land at least one clean throw 3salchow and their sbs spins had good unison, both in the run through and in regular practice. Skated to Rachmaninoff (I think concerto number two).
Hinzmann & Hartsell: In the practice session they did: sbs 3t(unison better than at Skate Detroit but she put her hand down), nice throw 3salchow, clean sbs 3toes, sbs small jump (I missed what it was) right into sbs 2axels (clean). In their run through, sbs 3t (he slight hand down), split 2twist, throw 3s (forward landing and stumbled to her hands).
Inoue & Baldwin: They really looked great tonight. I think I can recall them only missing on one element during the entire practice session. Sbs 2axels, sbs 3toes, throw 3salchow. In their run through: split 2twist, sbs 3t, throw 3s, a nice spiral sequence done in a serpentine pattern starting out with a change edge pair spiral (like Kwan) and then a turn into a RBO pair spiral. The music that was played this evening was one of figure skating’s “overused” music pieces, but for some reason I can’t remember the name. Oh well, the program still was great. I was impressed with how solid they looked.
Evora & Ladwig: throw 2s, split 2twist, nice 2a from him, throw 3s? (clean), and performed a nice throw 3salchow late in the practice. In the run through: sbs 3s (he stepped out, but it looked to be a good attempt), split 2twist, lift with 3 turns. The looked reasonably competent at what they were doing and it’ll be interesting to see how they do in the competition considering they‘re relatively unknown and a new team.
McInerny & Jorgans: in the run through: split 2twist, sbs 3salchows (she X and he doubled and stepped out I think), throw 3t (2ft and forward landing), pair lift (3 ˝ turns). I always like it when a pair team does the maximum allowed rotations on a lift, so I say good for them! Skated to the “Firebird.” In regular practice: throw 3t(hand down) and a clean throw 3salchow after a few attempts.
Orscher & Lucash: In the practice session they did: death drop into back sits (reasonably good unison and positions), death spiral directly into back pair spiral which was then curved right into a pair spin, sbs 3t(he 2t?) & then around into 2axels and then some turns into 2flips (I think), sbs 3t(he X). In the run through: sbs 3t (he tight landing but clean and around into 2axels, death drop into back sits, pair spiral in which she caught her toe pick it appeared and fell rather hard forward to the ice. She got up and had a cut on her arm (it wasn’t bleeding much from what I could tell) and they looked like they were going to stop, but their coach urged them to continue on, so they skated the rest of the program. It was basically watered down and they looked completely out of it after the fall, which I can’t blame them. She looked ok afterwards, but kept checking her arm for blood. They skated separately for a while after that, just gliding around the ice and then started practice again. Did some big throw jumps (doubles), and a nice big split 2twist at the end.
I didn’t see Spielberg & Joeright, so I guess they decided not to compete.
