Hi,
We were trying to get our "Trick or Treat" team back, but unfortunately it loos like all of us may not be doing the event. So we may need an axel team member, or combine with another group.
How are the other groups?

Who's planning on attending? Looks like a busy weekend for Adult Competitions - PA, OHIO, and now looks like Utah with the Intermountain Adult Competition in Salt Lake City:
http://saltlakefigureskating.com/main/index.php?page=comp.htm
plus of course Skate SF, which is a combined event with kids as well.
Well there sure are numerous options open for those who want to compete that weekend. :)

Coskater lent my team at the Peach her axel - that means she would be the perfect replacement for me on "Trick of Treat"!!
Just a thought,

I sent my application off today--I'm doing Bronze FS and Bronze spins at Halloween (because this year there's no backspin--the spin, not the forum member--in the Bronze spins event).
A friend of mine will also be competing in Bronze FS. I'm preparing to be soundly trounced by her, as her jump content is much higher than mine. (I know it's not all about jumps, but I don't have a lutz, let alone the lutz-loop combo and other combos that she has.) But it will be great fun and I don't really care how I place. I met some of the adult skaters at the hosting club during their adult seminar, and they were all really supportive and friendly.
Starskate6.0, if you're reading this--are you competing at Halloween?
Skatergirlva is joining us - so there's three now and an offical team. So far I'm doing the team event and interp pairs.

I'm coming up to watch-not to compete. Next year may be a different story! (Not sure whether it will be pre-bronze or bronze, but I'm thinking it will be as pre-bronze).
My coach wants me to wet my feet at some different competitions first and since my routine is no where near ready, that's ok. I can't wait to see some of you again!

I think flo was looking for someone for a team who had an axel. I think she found someone, but you might check w/her to see if she needs a backup in case anyone on her team can't do it at the last minute.

Hey, MSF, I'm signing up for Bronze Moves (you mean MIF, right?) too, along with Pre-Bronze Spins. Actually, I haven't completely decided yet - probably will on Thurs night.
I did Bronze MIF at New Year's and there was 1 man in the event, but he may not come to this comp b/c I think he was from NC or SC. Don't worry, we ladies don't bite! :halo: :)

We shall see.IIRC, last year there were 2 or 3 bronze men and 7 silver men; so they'll fit you in somewhere.
In any event (literally and figuratively!), it should be a nice competition to debut your bronze program. 8-)

I think you can only skate up to Silver if you've passed Bronze FS. If you haven't yet, then you could skate Pre-Bronze, if there are skaters in that comp but not Bronze. I don't think you'll have a problem, though. There were several Bronze Men at New Year's, and there was a fairly sizable group of men at HC last year - I don't remember what levels they were, though. But I think you'll be fine. The comp seems to draw from all across the mid-Atlantic states up to New England.

Yes, there is usually a company at every comp that offers videos of each event. You can buy 1 event (Pre-Bronze FS) or multiple events, whatever you want to pay for (I think I paid about $60-something last year). You can also bring your own camera if you want, but just a warning - the setup with the bleachers at HC is not very picture/video-friendly - they are set pretty far back from the ice and there is a net up.
Looking forward to seeing you there!

Thanks for the info! Sounds a lot like the comp at the Pond-the only good set up was for the paid videographer! I don't think I can afford $60/ea....I don't mind shooting through the net but might be able to shoot through the glass instead (as I do for hockey games). I did learn that it is best not to stand on the bleachers-all the people moving makes everything shake! I will bring my tripod (I can't hold my camera still enough).
I just want to tape a few routines-Pat is one and MikaWendy (who is Bronze I believe), Flo. I'm the only one adult track at my rink testing this year (there is a young lady but she is testing standard track).

What I have done in the past to save money with the videographers is to bring my own VHS tape and have them tape the event onto that tape. Just make sure it's queued and you're all set. It will save you at least a good $6.00 at least. (A minor tip I got from my primary coach...)
Otherwise... I typically use my Sony Cybershot anyway. (Need to upgrade mine, speaking of which...)

I'll probably tape - it's just hard to do, because you have to be soo intent on paying attention. As long as my son isn't with me-if he is, then I have to watch him, as I hear HC is CROWDED! and I don't want to lose him in the crowd (he would freak)... 8O

Aww, thanks! I'm skating up to Bronze for this competition--I've only passed my Pre-Bronze tests, but I wanted my program to be a Bronze program so that I can use it (eventually) for my Bronze FS test. (But that's waaay down the road as I have much work to do on my Bronze MIF!! Power 3s on the left side are my nemesis!) I'm also doing the Bronze spin event.
I have to get in gear about my dress for the competition, or I'll be wearing very plain gear!
Skate@Delaware--you'll get to see the evil evil choctaw that's in my program. Then again, when I do it, it's barely recognizable, lol. :) It doesn't have that nice quick twisty look to it that it should. It really shows that I don't do ice dancing when I do that step.
I'm actually most excited about getting to skate my program with no traffic!!

Mikawendy-You are braver than I am; sometimes I wish I had entered as no-test, but on second thought, there is no way I would have been ready in time!
But next year, someone will have to tape me (but not my husband-he zooms in and out soooo much, you get dizzier than if you were spinning! I'll spring the bucks for the pro CD)

Thanks for the compliment, Terry. I appreciate it. Actually, it is amazing to me when I watch tapes of programs I did last year or earlier, to see how far I have come, but still how far I need to go! BTW, when you do start competing, you can start a tape and bring that with you and have each program added onto the same tape. It's nice to have them all together. And that way, too, you can make a DVD eventually with all the programs together on 1 disk.

I have been lucky in being able to burn DVD's from my videos (comes in handy, I've made DVD's of the last 2 ice shows for people and of my group class), as well as the competition at The Pond last year. I taped my group class "jumps and spins" OMG! You should see it! It's hilarious! No, never mind, i don't think I'll show it to anyone! I skated like Frankensteins bride-all stiff and my waltz was barely a hop! Oh well, it's good for a laugh!
I'm hoping to get a new computer and do video editing so I can add transitions. Wicked fun!
For now I've got some video clips of me I'd like to get Casey to load on his site (for people to critique). Just waiting to hear from him.

Terry,
Oh, yes, I make DVD's from videos, too (Macs rule!) but I meant that it's more flexible for later use if you have the photographer/videographer put the program on a vhs tape (and cheaper to bring your own) than if you have them burn it to a DVD. Pulling files off a DVD is not trivial (well, except if you have the right software and a Mac, LOL) but it's easy to go from VHS to DVD.
Pat
Mika,
Lets paint! I'm actually giving a class tomorrow night at the hospital (I volunteer to teach cancer patinets and their family silk painting so they can make their own scarves). You're welcome to come, or we can get together sometime. I want to do my dress as well.

Hi all!! I haven't been around to post much - taking care of Baby Phillyskater while still running the competition has been taking up all my time, needless to say.
Anyway, a tentative schedule for the competition should be posted on our website by early next week. We are still receiving some late applications, and working out the details with the Referee. Practice ice sign-ups will be posted then too. So far, we have lots of ice time available each morning before the events start, and we may even have some practice ice available mid-day around lunchtime (depending on whether that time is needed for a test session or not). I noticed there was some discussion about photography/videography services. Both will be available, and I think the videos are going for something like $35 this year, much less than the $60 that was mentioned.
We had a HUGE response this year in terms of the number of skaters -- so far we have more that 125 competitors with more applications still coming in. I think that may even surpass the Peach:?: There's good representation at all levels, from No Test all the way through Senior. In any event, it should be a really great time again this year. I'll try to post updates here as soon as I have any new information. Or you can contact me at the official competition e-mail account with specific questions: iceworkshalloweenclassic@iceworkssc.org.
I hope everyone is doing well and I look forward to seeing everyone in November! :)

P.S. To those of you who entered but haven't received your e-mail confirmation yet, I appreciate your patience. I'm cranking them out as fast as I can (between feedings and diaper changes).

Actually... well... you've met me already at the workshop! A wacky skater from New Jersey, in black boot-cut leggings and red/black top. The one who skipped all the plyometrics stuff during the "warm-up" class ;)
I am very introvert, and was soooo nervous that day, that barely remember anything... (and I'm terrible with names!).
Looking forward to seeing you again... It will be a blast

Phillyskater (or any others who might know from having gone last year)--will the spin event have a brief warmup beforehand the way that FS events usually do, but (I'm guessing) shorter than 6min?
Also, will the number of competitors in each event be announced ahead of time? (Sorry, this is all new to me, so I'm probably asking competition newbie questions.)

Oh, yuck! My events are both on Sat (OK, I guess I can't complain about that) but all the FS events are on Sun, and I really want to see those. And I don't want to drive up both days, or stay overnight in a hotel - but obviously I have to do either 1 or the other. OK, I guess driving's not so bad - hey, it's closer than the drive to Atlantic City for Skate America this weekend.
I think that I may end up scratching from Bronze MIF. There's no way I'm going to get there by 7:15 (in time to check in for 8:15 event) on Sat morning. I'll make sure to be there in time to watch Loops/NoVa's program debut (well, debut for me since I didn't go to Peach). :)

Yes, there is a warm-up before every event, but compulsory events (like spins) are usually shorter than FS warm-ups. And keep in mind that your event is on half ice so your warm up will be half ice too.
And there will be lists of competitors in each event posted on the results wall before the competition starts so you can see how many people are in your group (or can PM me and I might be able to tell you ;) )

Yep, the schedule is up. So are the practice ice sign-up forms. I encourage everyone to send in their practice ice selections as soon as possible since the spaces will be reserved on a first-come first-serve basis, and will probably fill up quickly due to the number of competitors this year. We will have practice ice running on multiple surfaces at the same time, so we should have enough ice time for everyone who wants it, but if you want to get your first choice time spot, I suggest you act now.
Info about the competitors party should be posted there soon too.
We're getting closer!!!! :P

Hi,
As I mentioned somewhere, I'll be having a booth together with Judy from Figureskatewear. I will be bringing up painted silk scarves and skating skirts. I also have silk cosmetic bags, eyeglass pouches and (the essential to every skating bag) - tissue pac holders. This year I'll have tracing designs on the silks - edges, turns, moves and the like.
On the non-silk side I make cigar box purses and medal boxes. These are custom made with your picture.
If anyone wants something special, let me know.
Debbie,
We're driving up Friday night if you'd like to ride up!

Ok, someone explain what is Pre-Bronze Comp. Moves and what is the diff between that and the Pre-Bronze MIF?
If you take a look at the application, you can see examples of elements in each type of event. The moves in the field events are specifically from the moves in the field tests. A compulsory moves event is a program skated without music with some number of required elements, with a maximum time limit. So for example in the pre-bronze compulsory moves event at this competition, you have to do a waltz jump, a half flip, a toe loop, a spiral, and a one foot spin. So you do them with some choreography in whatever order you like. It's good practice for people new to programs, and just kind of fun. I decided to do this event because it would force me to practice certain things even more than usual.

Well, it's official. I just e-mailed the organizers and withdrew from Bronze MIF. I'll still do Pre-Bronze Spins, and emphasized that in my e-mail. I'll probably get there around 10:30 or so on Sat morning, in time to watch Loops and NoVa, and then I'll be in much better shape to do my spins event than if I got up at the crack of dawn, or before dawn.
Looking forward to seeing everyone. I'm just doing my spins event for fun. I haven't competed since Feb. It'll feel strange (in a good way) to be competing in the middle of the day and not first thing in the morning!
Oh, but Debbie - everyone should know the thrill of competing when you're half asleep! I competed in bronze one year at Wilmington at 8am. It's a good thing that I could do that program in my sleep, because that's what it was! Then you get surprised again when there is actually someone watching (I think it was the person who got me up and drove me there). And yet again later with gold. I must eased the judges into morning with a very lyrical soft program, no scraping to wake anyone (me).
You'll be great. See you there!

I'm not in charge of the party planning, but I'm told that there will be more than just munchies. It won't be as formal as a sit-down dinner though since it is a party, but there will be plenty to eat (both hot and cold dishes and plenty of beverages...)

Rink 2 (the Olympic rink). So when you enter the driveway, turn into the parking lot on the left, in front of the main entrance (although if you signed up for practice ice, it may not be on Rink 2 - we are using all 4 surfaces for practice ice).
I did think about it but let's think this through fully. I showed up in Kansas City for AN this year with a program that was completely choreographed since mid-August and I was running through every single session at least once since January. Despite all of that, I still got a huge case of the nerves. If I showed up at Aston with a program that was only choreographed from the beginning to the one minute mark and had to make up the rest as I went along I'd probably have a coronary as I was standing at mid-ice waiting for my music to start. :P
I give you a lot of credit. If my memory serves me correctly, you told me you were re-chorographing your program at 1am the morning of our event at KC. 8O I would never have the nerve to do that. Knowing me, I'd get all confused and spaz out.
Kudos also to Tim David for taking the Gary Beacom approach to skating. ;)

Knowing me, I'd get all confused and spaz out.Well, not completely rechoreographing the program. I don't trust myself enough: If something does not go right in a practice session, I will take the "safe" route and change a few moves or spins to minimize the risk. At AN, I was paranoid that my program just wasn't hitting the mark, so I listened to my program (via iPod) at said hour and changed the layout. As my stupid brain often works, in the warmup of our event, I reverted back to the original progam because the new layout was not working! :??
So here's to getting a program, practicing it many time and long before competing, and then just sticking to it! I've gotta stop second-guessing myself. And yeah, the impromptu thing really does not work in pairs! :P

Hey there,
Gary Beacom was famous for showing up at pro events and improvising entire programs. Usually the sportscasters would ask him to provide them with a list of elements so that they had an idea of what was coming up in the program during the broadcast and he would often hand in a sheet of paper with the following:
?
That's it.
However, he used to improvise every aspect of his programs from his jumps and spins to the choreography as well. Along the way he did some pretty amazing stuff but certainly I am not wired to follow in his footsteps.

Good luck to everyone! I'll be there both days, doing pre-bronze/bronze maneuver team, pre-bronze compulsory moves, and pre-bronze free skating. Saturday's dress is black with a double skirt, light blue and black, Sunday's dress is a dark green. Come say hello if you are there!

Safe travels to Philly, everyone! I'll see you tomorrow, around 10:30-ish. My dress is burgundy, with some sequins around the neck area - and it's missing one sequin in the back, b/c every time I re-glue a sequin to that spot, it falls off, so I've given up - Jazzpants suggested cement, but I don't think it would stretch well.
Hopefully, my "good" spins will show up, and not the "bad" ones. :)

I'll be staying with friends in Newark DE, but I'll be at the rink pretty much all day each day, because I have practice ice both days, then Saturday I want to stay to watch flo and her friend compete in similar pairs interpretive, then Sunday, my FS event is one of the later events of the day.
I can't wait to see and meet everyone!
A big thanks to phillyskater, Starskate6.0, and everyone else in that club who is volunteering their time to help put this event on! Everyone's been so helpful!

Mine is still being choreographed as well! And Tim D. is still trying to decide his music (I think). So you should have signed up. ;)
Last year, there were 7 silver men.
I didn't even do a run through of my new program til Wednesday, as in 2 days ago. LOL So this will just be a glorified practice for me. :) Frank, you should have entered. But look forward to seeing you there.
Tim David - I hope they don't play my music for you again. But seeing as you haven't decided on music yet, should I bring an extra copy for you just in case. :)

OK, let me get this thread back on track...
It was great to see and meet everyone today. There were so many good performances....let's see...I hope I don't leave anyone out!
Loops and NoVa did an awesome job in their event, as did Rob and Jenny. Flo and Schoolfigures were terrific in Pairs Interp- and their costumes were beautiful as well. I am now the proud owner of a Flo-made silk tissue-pack holder - in gorgeous blue color tones. It was great to meet FrankR, icecatepairs, NaomiBeth1, rlichtefeld, and anyone else I may have forgotten.
Sk8pics did a great job in her CM event and Loops's Interp was fabulous as always. So sad to think this is the last time "To Where You Are" will be performed. Starskate and partner had a great program (Congrats, guys!) as did starskate in his singles Interp (Congrats again!). And starskate also excelled as the ice monitor for my event (and others). :)
As for my spins event, well....I was a bit perturbed that the video guy only taped the lobby end for the half-ice events (and I was, of course, at the Zam end) but considering that I did my better spins during the warm-up, it's probably better that there's no video evidence - lol. Oh well, spins are not my forte (to put it mildly) so I was pleased to just complete the required number of revs and not fall over on my toepicks. And I got one of the nifty scarecrow-shaped medals. I haven't competed since Feb so it was good to get back in comp mode with a less-pressured event (as opposed to FS). I really need to work on my comp nerves - I hate how I can do stuff in the warm-up but then mess up in the comp - grrr. And I really need to get cracking on FS elements - I've been focusing more on MIF lately.
And it was great to see phillyskater (who looks great!) -she and her team worked very hard on the event. My one complaint was that the rink was so cold (I could hardly feel my legs in my event)! But I know philly and crew don't control that. :)
Well, I'll be back tomorrow for the FS events. Looking forward to seeing more great programs!

Chiming in again...
It's late and I'm tired, so I'll be brief. Everyone was really impressive in their FS events today. I started out the day watching a clubmate win No-Test FS - it was her first FS comp and she did a great job. Then I saw sk8pics in her FS event - great spiral and ending spin! (plus sk8pics remembered to smile - I always seem to forget to do that -lol) Loops, NoVa, MusicSkateFan, icecatepairs, NaomiBeth1, and starskate all did a great job in their FS events (and anyone else here I may have forgotten to mention). :) It was great to meet MusicSkateFan and Beccapoo today (in addition to those I met yesterday).
Overall the comp was very enjoyable. I thought some things could have been improved - such as the noisy kids getting their rental skates while FS events were going on - and then there were those kids that decided to come up to sit on the metal bleachers to put their skates on, which meant they had to walk on the bleachers in their skates to get down to the floor. (I guess this is why rental skates are always dull.) I know the rink can't move their skate rental window, but you'd think at least the rink staff could point out that there was a competition going on right in front of them. I also think it might be a good idea to move the medal ceremony back to the snack bar area instead of in the lobby, b/c in addition to the general noise level which made it hard to hear names and events when they were called, we also had to contend with hockey players and public session skaters and parents pushing their way through and bumping into people with their bags and such.
But all in all, it was a great event, well-run (no hour-long schedule backups this year) with a lot of great people and great skating. Thanks to phillyskater, starskate, and the rest of the Ice Works FSC crew for their hard work in putting the competition together.

I agree 100%. The main thing I'd add would be to break up the warm ups. 7 people in a warm-up was a free for all (esp. as a lefty), and even worse was the 8 guys in the Silver Men. They all were so fast and are so agressive that I have to believe it was a difficult warm-up. It was a great event, and one of my favorites to watch.
I had a great time at the event, especially in the Maneuver Teams Event! That event was a blast - maybe next year they can split Pre-Bronze, Bronze, Silver and Gold all into separate events.
Overall it was a blast - and I was as consistent as could be - LAST in every event I entered! :)
Hi,
What a fun time! The club did a great job and were wonderful hosts. Congrats to all! I tried to see as many as I could while running back and forth from my booth. The ladies and men's bronze groups were strong - as were what I saw of silver.
A special congrats to Mika on her first competition. I was a clean beautiful program. It was great to see everyone there, and I too would have liked the medals presented in the snack bar area - so I could have seen them - and I think there was more room and no conflict with the dancing machine.
I had a great time with the interp pairs - and of course the team event. My magic wand is available for future events!
I also had fun having a vendor booth at the event. I've not done this before, so any suggestions are welcome. I know the other vendors did not do very well, so I'd like to know what the skaters would like to see. I'll also put this on another thread. The best part about it was that I got to meet folks comming by. I did close up early to put Mika on and see some events, so if any one wants anything special, just let me know.
Congrats all around!

I must agree about the frigidity of the rink and the public session issue.
BUT.....
The competition was very well run, and the organizers were WONDERFUL!! I felt very welcome as an Adult Skater. I will definitely be back! (Muahahhaahaha)! The rink is pretty close to the airport, the hotel rates are reasonable, there are lots of good resteraunts around, and liquer stores (oops, did I say that) 8O ... I told myself I was gonna behave this weekend, but Rob L put a bug in my ear and we had some fun with NOVA's freeskate,   which by the way was very nice! Also, Saturday night we spent a lot of time pulling pranks (geez, I just can't help it)!
I must mention that Rob's spin program was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! I hope he puts some pics up.
It was great to meet some of you guys and now put faces with names.
Thanks to all for a great weekend, and may the saga continue......

Hello all,
I thought I should add my kudos to the organizers of the Halloween Classic as well. I had a lot of fun at this event and it was great meeting new people and seeing familiar faces again. The only frustrating thing was not knowing who's who on skatingforums!
I forget who told me that it might be a good idea to walk around with name tags having our screen names on them. The more I think about it the more I'm warming up to the idea. :D
I really enjoyed the team event. I'd never participated in one before but I was so glad I participated in this one. Within our own team, we really rallied around each other for support not only for the team event but for our individual events as well. Then, during the team event, I think the support we gave each other between the different teams was also great. I couldn't help but feel that the whole experience was so positive and warm. (Warmth in the emotional sense, not the environmental sense. My toes are still ice-cold and blue. ;) )
The freeskate events were awesome! The pairs and singles events were extremely enjoyable. Everyone was great but I have to throw a huge "YOU ROCK" to the silver class five lady who threw an axel in her program. 8O
It was great to meet DebbieS and renatele. I'm not sure if I met any more of us from skatingforums. I think I met flo (Were you wearing the wings flo?). If I met anyone else, please by all means, PM me and remind me. I don't want to lose track of who I met this weekend.
Take care,

Chiming in to say that I had a fantastic time and it was so great to meet everyone! I liked the whole competition very much, although I of course agree about the freezing cold being tough! I also thought a few more ice cuts would have been nice; the ice was pretty pathetic by the time my compulsory moves event took place. I think it had been 3 1/2 hours since a cut by then!
Thanks for the kind words, Debbie. The photographer had been telling me all weekend not to forget to smile and I remembered somewhat in my free program! But the smile I had at the end was because I was so excited about my final spin! 8-) I think it was the best one I have ever done, and certainly the best I ever did in competition. My coach was pretty happy about it, too!
The coolest part (well, besides the spin) was the small avalanche of animals thrown onto the ice when I finished my free skating program. Just so nice of people and really cool. I don't even know who all threw me something, so a big thank you to all!
It was especially fun at the party on Saturday night! Just nice to meet new people and get to know others better.

Hi Frank,
Yes, flutter, flutter - I was in the wings. Thought I was going to put an eye out going into the layback! The team event was a hoot. It's fun to have all of us on the ice at the same time.
I actually do have a "flo" t-shirt when many of us were on the "other" board. I think we had them made for a nationals so we could find eachother.
My toes have thawed. We need blankies for next year!

A big CHEER for the IceWorks SC, Phillyskater, and all the rest !!! You all ROCK. Your facility is great & your hospitality was wonderful. Thank you for a very enjoyable weekend.
Thanks for the extra locker room space this year!! Yes, the few issues mentioned above could have been better, but everything worked out. My bigger concern with the large warm-up group (Silver Men) was the LLLooooonnnnggg wait AFTER the warmup for the last skaters in the group. The 7th & 8th skaters are really left at a disadvantage with the long wait in the cold to skate their programs. WOW, with 8 Silver men, could they have not split into some age groups? or maybe the particular mix of ages just didn't work out for that?
Anyway, the issues were minor bumps in a very well-run show.
CONGRATS to all of us for some GREAT skating and more fun than anyone could ask for.

Wow, it was great to see everybody again! FrankR, icecatepairs, skate1965, Debbie S, flo, MusicSkateFan, skatergirlva (but I see her all the time  ), Rob, Becca, Jenny, NaomiBeth, careygram, mdvask8er, 2salchow, starskate and philly... meeting mikawendy and sk8pics (and having quite an interesting conversation yesterday with sk8pics' coach)...
The dressing room situation was much better than last year, and the only real issues were the FREEZING cold rink and the warmups, but that was better than last year too. At least my freestyle event (9 of us) was split into two warmup groups.
Oh, I skated, didn't I? Nova and I were pretty happy with our pairs program, my interp could have been better but could have been a lot worse, and my FS was pretty good too. Not perfect, but when is it ever?
Congrats to everyone who goes out on the ice alone wearing lycra and stretch velvet, knowing you're going to be videotaped! And thanks to everyone at IceWorks.

  Yes, I remember hearing part of your conversation with my coach, and thinking how cool it was. I'm glad he was able to come and help me and his other students and also see more adult skating and talk to more adult skaters, especially pairs skaters! And it was really nice to get to know you a little bit.
I forgot to mention that, I think it was on Saturday, it became clear that the guys in their locker room could hear everything we were saying in the locker room next to them, and it was pretty funny and entertaining! It was nice that there was enough space for everyone, but really, the way the locker rooms open up into the rink is NOT a good thing! 8O 8O
I think I forgot to say this before, but really the folks in Aston did a super job and I'm looking forward to next year!

I had a great time, especially during the times when I wasn't being nervous before my FS event on Sunday!
Many many thanks to flo who put me on the ice and kept me cool and collected before my FS event!! She also took care of me right after when I was still a bundle of nerves!
I really enjoyed meeting so many new people and seeing some people from the forum--sk8pics, LoopLoop, Skate@Delaware (feel better soon!), starskate6.0, and others. I couldn't find you all--I agree that nametags or something would be a good idea!
Sk8pics, I really liked your FS program--the choreography and your presentation were really nice--and the spiral was great! Your coach is super nice, too!
The team maneuvers events on Saturday were a hoot! The Southern Comfort was too funny! Interp was great, too, especially pairs interp--flo and her partner had really nice side-by-side brackets and their side-by-side camel spins were perfectly coordinated.
I watched the no test, prebronze ladies, prebronze men, and bronze men FS events on Sunday morning, and everyone did a stellar job. One prebronze man had a program filled with spreadeagles and interesting transitions (not a single crossover in his program!). The Bronze Men event was really outstanding, too--*fast* spins, high jumps, and overall really good presentation and attack. Some of the bronze men stuck around to watch a friend of theirs skate in Bronze I/II FS that afternoon--thanks to them and everyone else who stayed so late in the day--it was nice to have so many spectators during the event (it made it less test-like with more than just judges watching). I also enjoyed watching the Bronze III ladies FS event. And the Gold men FS event was GREAT, too!
I also liked the exhibitions that the club planned. I hope the club realizes that there really were a lot of spectators in the snack bar (for warmth).
Thanks to the hosting club for putting on such a great event! I'll definitely be back next year!

Becca, Jenny and I made it through the 2005 Halloween Classic. It was a big competition. There were 8 guys in Silver Men!! (I'm glad I didn't enter it.)
The rink was extremely cold. EXTREMELY COLD. It was also
Olympic size. The locker rooms also were not heated. It was
hard to get warmed up and then stay warm after the warm up.
The three of us did the Silver/Gold Maneuver Team event. Becca
did the layback and Axel, I did the Camel/Sit and Spiral
Sequence and Jenny did the Single/Single combo. We skated
under the name "Southern Comfort". We dressed in tie-dye and
took swigs from a large Southern Comfort bottle on the ice with us.
(Unfortunately we had filled it with tea.) We yelled things
like "FreeBird", and other southern-isms. Jenny also blackened
her eye with makeup and she and Becca had a "fight" on the ice
right after the warm up, where Becca popped her a good one.
Becca had a slight problem with the Axel and I totally screwed
up the Camel sit, and we still came in 6 of 7.
Jenny and I placed 2nd of 2 in the Silver Pairs event. We knew
that there was no way we could beat Loop-Loop and NovaSkr
unless they didn't finish their program. They won the
Silver Pairs event at AN last year and are a very good very strong team.
They skated up to Gold Pairs at Peach and won. But, we wanted to
put our program on the ice. (You've gotta do it a few times
before the judges if you hope to even stand up at AN).
Becca did her "Bad to the Bone" routine for the Adult Interp and
came in 2nd of 7. She also did Masters MIF and came in 3rd
of 3. And she came in 3rd of 7 in Silver Compulsory Moves III&IV.
In the Silver CM III&IV, I came in 5th of 7. And, I WON the
Silver Spins III&IV event! There were 6 others in the event
and when I skated it I didn't think I would even medal. I
guess the spins looked better than they felt. It had the only
good camels I hit all day.
I have the video of Jenny's and my skate at:
http://www.gerfsc.com/videos.htm
(My camcorder was messing up, so that is all I was able to tape
the whole event.)
I'll post some photos the next day or so on the Geriatric site:
http://www.gerfsc.com
I need sleep. There were late night pranks! (I think a garbage can, ironing board and potted plant travelled more in one night that some competitors getting to the competition.)
It was great meeting a lot of new people from this forum and renewing old friendships. Adult comps are very special events. They recharge my batteries.

Thanks! I was TREMBLING inside the whole time I skated. About halfway through, I was thinking to myself, screw the placements--I just want to be finished! But at the same time I was enjoying myself. And this I pay money to do!
The whole afternoon of the event, I kept running into people who were going to be skating in that same free skate event, and we were telling each other how nervous we were!

I had an extra copy of the video order form in my skate bag--it's Action Sports & More Photography / Nice Images, 302-355-0506. There's no address on the order form. The video was $25 for first event, $15 for each additional. I gave them a tape of my own; otherwise it was $10 for the DVD or $5 for a blank tape. I don't recall what shipping was. What I forgot to ask was whether when you pay for an event you get a whole flight of skaters (the entire group of skaters in that event) or just yourself. I'm kind of thinking it's the latter, which is too bad, because it would be nice to have the whole flight.
Edited to add: Skate@Delaware, I think for the team maneuvers event, you just can't have passed above the highest FS test for that team maneuver level (e.g., for Prebronze/Bronze maneuvers, team members can't have passed Silver FS). That would mean that even if your husband hasn't passed Prebronze freestyle by next year, he could still compete on a Prebronze/Bronze maneuvers team.

Yeah, Becca emptied it BEFORE she came to the event!
Although, the bottle made it's rounds. It was a prop on the ice for our Team event. It was in the hotel hallway in front of Judy and Paul's room (along with many other things). It was slid on the ice after NovaSk8r freestyle.
It had a good life.

Yes, those prices are for just yourself, except if you ordered one of the maneuver team events, in which case you will get the whole event. But you can always call up and order the whole event. I think a whole event was something like $50 or $60, which is still not that bad.
Hi,
Anyone remember how much the entry was for the team event?

Hi everyone. I just wanted to add a quick post to thank everyone for the postive (and constructive) feedback regarding the competition. Everyone worked very hard to make it all come together, and it's totally worthwhile when we see that everyone had a great time. I wish I could have seen more of the skating rather than running around both days (and well into the night) but I've heard that everyone did well, and most importantly, that everyone had a good time.
We will take note of the comments we've received on how to improve for next year (like the rink temperature--although that's in the control of the operations staff rather than the club despite our begging and pleading to turn up the heat--and the locker room issue). Please spread the word about next year's competition to all the adult skaters you know during the year. We're hoping to keep getting bigger every year and offer more in connection with the competition (like the test session this year, maybe a clinic next year, etc.) And ideas for new events, etc. are also welcome.
Congrats to all who competed and I look forward to seeing many of you again at future events.

Adult skaters do rock! The Halloween Classic was such fun! It was especially fun to hang out with all you terrific people, and then of course there is the skating - the best thing in the world!
The team event was a blast. I thought we had a weak team because we were all silver skaters. But to our utter surprise, we hung on for the pewter medal! Maybe it was all that flapping. Go Bats! That axel is brutal for us silvers. I had to do my weanie "grounded axel" because no one else was brave enough to try. It wasn't good, but it was landed on one foot - yay!
And these medals sure are cute! I was shocked win gold not only in my interp, but also in my freestyle (and another pewter in spins). I went home heavily decorated. Wow! I like those judges.
Thanks to the Iceworks crew! It was a really fun, well run event.

I did get the story of why the rink was so freaking cold during the competition. The owners have basically forbidden the staff from turning on the heat because their heating costs have gone up 25% over the last year. To make things worse, the building isn't properly insulated so the heat literally leaks through the roof. In any case, we are still going to print out all your messages, highlight the parts that say how uncomfortable the rink was, and pass it along to the owners. One of my coaches is the program director of the rink and has been battling with the owners over the heat issue. This will just add fuel to the fire so to speak.
I had a great time at the competition too. The team maneuvers event totally cracked me up! A couple of us wanted to ask Southern Comfort for a swig from their bottle, but we had a cop on our team. No public drunkeness for us . It's so nice to see so many people having fun at a competition.
Flo, Mika's dress was beautiful! When do you teach your fabric painting class for cancer patients? My sister, who is a very stressed out caregiver of a cancer patient, would really get into something like that. I've been looking for creative outlets for her including letting her design my dress for this competition. Heck, if she wanted the dress to be pee-green, I would have done it, but thankfully she had better taste than that.

Unfortunately, Becca had already emptied the bottle, so we had to fill it with tea for the event! She got the color about right though. I have a photo at:

Hi Hippo,
Glad you liked the dress! - I love that color on the ice.
My next one is at Hopkins on the 17th. We try to do one once a month or so. You and your sister are welcome, or we could do it another time.

Rob L.Wonderful picture, Rob! Pity we don't have a team event like that at the MC.... especially as Becca has turned me on to Bourbon, which I never knew that I liked!

Although, the bottle made its rounds. It was a prop on the ice for our Team event. It was in the hotel hallway in front of Judy and Paul's room (along with many other things). It was slid on the ice after NovaSk8r's freestyle. It had a good life.Long live the SoCo bottle! 8-)

And thanks, Rob and Becca for the spiking of my GatorAde bottle (pic taken after my first sip)!

Has anyone who ordered a video gotten theirs yet? When I talked to the guy there, he said he'd send them out by the end of the (last) week. It's perfectly understandable that he'd be a little late, but I was just wondering if anyone had received theirs.
Usually, I've gotten comp videos within a week of the comp - guess the other vendors spoiled me! :)

Hi Debbie,
I haven't received my video yet either. I'm flying out on Saturday to visit family and I would have wanted to take it with me. I'm wondering whether I should give the guy a call.
I'll keep you posted.
Take care,
Frank

The video guy told me it would be about 2 weeks. So maybe by the end of this week.
