Since there is a roll call for the Halloween Classic, I might as well start one for Skate San Francisco too!!! :P So who coming here... and what event are you competing in?
I will be in the Adult Pre-Bronze Light Entertainment/Dramatic event again this year. I will not jinx myself by saying this will be my last Pre-Bronze event, b/c God knows if I'm ready to take that Bronze Moves test. :P But I will say that I have a new artistic program done by a new choreographer (my secondary coach!) I like her stuff so far. I hope my skating will do her work some justice by that time. And if I'm lucky, I may actually stay on the podium this year!!!
Look forward to seeing you guys there!!!
I'll be there! Bronze-level Freeskating, Interpretive, and Solo Dances at the very least. Possibly some skills and MIF events as well - depending on what events are offered. :) Are there team events? If so, I'm up for joining a team. :D

I am hoping to do this one but I have heard they have bad times for the adults, is it adult only this year? What about dancers at this event? I really am looking for an excuse to go to the west coast.
Otherwise I'll skate masters nov fs, spins, field moves jr/sr, pre gold dance and whatever else looks fun.

Thanks!

I'm hoping to do this competition.
If I can get my tests passed (or if I can skate up a level) I'll be competing adult Gold, if not it'll be Silver
Just FS and/or compulsory (not sure if compulsory is offered).
I'm on the fence about this one. I'd have to compete in Bronze and my skills just aren't competitive enough right now for the category. Plus, the only program I currently have would have to be completely reworked. I don't know if I really want to spend the $$$ on what would likely turn out to be a lot of stress & aggravation.
Edited to add: I just looked at the competition announcement and am no longer on the fence. I promised my young niece I'd head out to Virginia for her birthday, which is the same date as the first day of Skate SF.

I'm planning to attend. I will be skating Adult Gold FS for sure. Don't know about interp yet, I don't think I will have a new program together in time.
Jazzpants, do you have any influence with the organizers? Can you tell them not to schedule the Adult events late Sunday night this year??

It's usually a combination of USFSA and ISI, I don't know about this year as I haven't read the annoucement yet.

One of them is true... it was from me griping about my 10:00pm event two years ago!!! That was because that year they were trying to cram in 4 days worth of events to 3 days!
However...
They have learned their lesson and they don't try to cram in events late at night now! The reason why it's expanded this to four days is because it's a HUGE event and we need the days spread out so people don't skate at weird times like 10pm or early EARLY morning. My event last year was a Friday at 11am. I loved the timeslot! (Though I didn't praticularly like my skate that day...but that's another story...)
This is a combined adults and kids event... however, there are a lot more adult events at this competition than a lot of the ones I've heard about or seen.
Here's the announcements: http://www.scsf.org/skatesf/SkateSF2005/skatesf2005.htm
Jazzpants, do you have any influence with the organizers? Can you tell them not to schedule the Adult events late Sunday night this year??Hell, the organizers doesn't have that much influence on time! It really depends on who signed up for the competition and the specific events!
The other thing -- I have a funny feeling this would be my answer: They will try to acomodate that request, but no matter what they do, there's always someone who will not be happy with their time slot for one reason or another. :P (This is partly why they made the event four days long... probably should make it a week now at this point!!!)
Hi Jazzpants: I am starting to plan for the San Fransisco competition and since this is your neighbourhood I would like to ask you - what 'district' is the competition in. Districts are defined at Priceline as Cathedral Hill area, Civic Centre area Fishermens Wharf area, Union Square east or west area, South San Fransisco area and Airport area. If I were to book with the two economy hotels named in the announcement, would I need to book a car?
I know, I know I am early but I have never liked doing the last-minute thing unless it can't be helped.....

If I were to book with the two economy hotels named in the announcement, would I need to book a car?The ice rink is in the SOMA area! I think you want to aim towards SOMA (South of MArket), financial district, or Union Square if you are looking to find a hotel w/o having to rent a car. I will say though that the MUNI system is pretty reasonable so as along as you're in the city of SF, I wouldn't worry too much... there's plenty of MUNI bus lines! (I got by w/o a car for the longest time. It was when I had to get out of the city for a job that I finally got a car...)
Do NOT aim towards the Tenderloin district! WAAAAY too dangerous!!! I would aim towards the Marriott or Ramana Inn for the best deals. I haven't stayed at the Pickwick, but the hotel bldg on the outside looks cheap to me...
singerskates (and all you other Canadians out there in skatingforum.com land...) this event IS sanctioned by Skate Canada (http://www.scsf.org/skatesf/SkateSF2005/skatesf2005.htm)!!!
Many thanks. I got an incredible seat sale so the flight is booked. I am glad I don't need a car, now for a hotel room......
The Argent Hotel is also very close to the ice rink -- within walking distance. The Palace hotel is also nearby, but is $$$$.
Based on the Priceline districts you described Raye, I think that the rink would fall within the Union Square East area. Hotels on or near the Embarcadero may work for you as well.

Unfortunately,
I think not for me. I will go to Philly instead, I prefer all adult competitions rather than the mixed.Yeah, I can see the case where an all adult competition is preferred (and I *DO* wonder why we don't have any local all-adult competitions considering that we have a HUGE population of adult figure skaters in both the Bay Area and LA...) But I do want to add though that despite the fact that this is a mixed competition that we have historically had a HUGE turnout of adult skaters coming out of the woodworks. I always consider Skate SF as a small preview/glimpse of what you'll see at Sectionals or Nationals. And of course, this year it's also sanctioned by Skate Canada, so hopefully we'll get a good turnout from Canadians as well too.
Which reminds me... Annabel... anybody you know of on your side of the Atlantic that you know are coming here this year? (Not that I expect anyone, but I was just wondering...)

Which reminds me... Annabel... anybody you know of on your side of the Atlantic that you know are coming here this year? (Not that I expect anyone, but I was just wondering...)Not to my knowledge, unless Jenny is going? Haven't seen her recently to find out. Wish we could go - one of these years, we will! First of all the Peach, then Skate SF, probably 2-3 years apart, given our budgets! But not next year for either, we really want to do the dance camp at Bad Reichenhall again, and we can't do that and go to the USA in the same year! Alas.

Wowee, PattyP, a marathon! That's pretty hard core! I've never run farther than 8 miles at 1 time. (I just got back from my tiny little 1.5 mile run and I'm wiped out.) I can't even imagine making it through a half marathon. Have you done one before?

If you can run 8, you can train for and run a marathon! It just takes time to build up to that kind of milage. I once said that I could never complete a 1/2. I've run 2 street marathon's and 1 trail, with a PR of 3:54:45.
Last year I ran one 3 weeks before Skate SF and did okay and this year I plan to do the same. I usually take off skating the week before the marathon to let my legs rest and can barely skate the week after from the pain, but that gives me 2 weeks of good training for SF and there is no problem with my endurance at this point!
Jazzpants, I will again need that Ice Blessing. It worked for be before 8-)

Okay, my application is done and will go in the mail tonight!
I'm doing FS only. Bruce was kind enought to give my coach a very preliminary schedule of events so she could plan her travel. My event, Gold Ladies FS will take place on Saturday. Yay! :D
My plan is to arrive late Thursday and leave Sunday morning. Jazz, I hope that allows me to see your event!
To Jazz (or anyone else)
I'm with a group of several Canadians this weekend who are talking about entering SF and we were wondering about the "Skills" categories (compulsory moves, spins jumps MIF etc...)- are these categories for anyone or are they kid-stream? They are not listed as adult events but can adults enter them?

They are not listed as adult events but can adults enter them?First thing, the only events that are at Skate SF I know of all required that you do a program. (i.e. no spins, jumps, MIF events.)
You have a choice of either to do artistic (character or light entertainment/dramatic) or FS (technical) program. The events are separated into kiddie and adult events from those skills level on. You might want to refer to this announcement form (http://www.scsf.org/skatesf/SkateSF2005/SkateSF2005Announcement-Combined.pdf) (you'll need Acrobat to read the link) for more info on which level may be for you and your group.

There are four of us Canadians coming that I know of.I will be there... though I am questioning now in light of the Bronze Moves test situation whether I will be competing this year. I really want this test over and done with... and I still have to tame the Bronze FS test beast as well too. Of course, I have a slew of people who want me to compete at this event... In any case, I will be there as a volunteer and a cheerleader...
What events are you going to be in? Look forward to seeing you here!!! :D
I signed up for Adult Bronze Freeskate, Adult Artistic Light Entertainment 4 and Adult Artistic Character 4
The Freeskate and Character are both older established programs, but the Light Entertainment one is new. I just started learning that one a week or so ago. AAAAAAK I only have a few weeks to pull that one together   I debated with myself (and my friends in Ottawa) for a few days and almost left it out, but what the hay! So it's a go.
I hope your test goes well for you on Saturday and that you may even be able to compete, (I am among those who hope that you do enter at least one event, just for the fun of it) we will have to do lunch regardless! See you in just over a month. :) :) :) :) :) :)

This will also be my Bronze FS test program and likely my Sectionals program as well too!

Well, both Raye and I have reasons to celebrate....
Raye had very strong and FAST footwork and got a Silver out of her event.
PattyP... as I mentioned, Scott got his Gold in his event...
Lastly me... well, it wasn't a clean program... my loop was toe tapped on the landing and my flip went somewhere out of this world... but everything else, including the dreaded backspin stayed with me.
And how did I do in my event? GOOOOOOOLD!!!! (And straight 1 ordinals to boot too!!!!) OMG!!! 8O 8O 8O
It was funny... I told Jay just after the last skater in my event skated "Wouldn't it be funny if I got the Gold???" He nodded his head "Yeah!!!" How ironic, huh??? (Wait 'til my secondary coach finds out!!! )
Other funny note: Mistress Coach (my old secondary coach) watched my program. I found out later on when she saw my opening the first thing she said was "Oh, she has a backspin!" 8O (I had a LOT of trouble with those backspins and the poor woman was tearing her hair out trying to get me to do one.)
And speaking of Mistress Coach... MAJOR KUDOS and CONGRATS to ask8ngcat for HER GOLD as well!!! Very well deserved!!!! (See??? Told 'ya you'd land that axel and win!!! Trust in jazzpants' ice blessings!!!)

Congratulations on your GOLD medal Jazzpants!!! :D :D
and Congrats to Raye on your Silver!! :D :D
I wish I could have been there. It's 5:15 in the morning and I need to get my butt to the rink for another practice. Then I have to go to work and then to the airport and at 3:55 to be on my way to SF! I wish I could just skip the work part....
See you all soon!

I had a great time in SF! It was a very well run competition as always.
Thanks Raye for the bear and the bath salts!
Thanks Jazzpants for the ice blessing, I did land 1 of 2 axels and managed a 2nd place even though it was a pretty rough skate. Against that group, I expected to be last, so I was very happy with my result.
My coach will be kicking my butt to work harder from now on...I certainly need to!

Hey, Patty, congratulations!!! That silver medal must look awfully shiny (especially knowing you skated against Maggie!).
San Fransisco was awesome! Kudos to the Skating Club of San Fransisco for a well run event that stayed pretty close to on time for four days, even managing to be early now and then... Great job by all the volunteers.
Jazzpants and PattyP, it was great to meet you both and congratulations on your well deserved medals
Thank you for all the well-wishes from everyone
Annabel I am sure you did well at Oxford on Sunday.... dying to hear :halo:

Annabel I am sure you did well at Oxford on Sunday.... dying to hear :halo:I posted it on last week's lesson thread, probably more detail than people wanted to know!!!! ;) Especially those who don't know the people involved (but you do)..... to summarise, disappointing solo compulsories; disappointing couples compulsories; Husband gratifyingly did well in his solo compulsories and beat Other Woman - and then we skated fantastic in our free dance and our dear rivals, sadly, didn't - and for the first time ever, we finished on a higher step of the podium than they did! Yaaay!
