Male here as well....just a tad older. I will be 60 this spring.

I won't have to worry about competing against you gentlemen at Adult Nationals since I would be in Class V.

27yo/male here, been skating for over 10 years though so I'm not really a beginner, even though I feel like one at times:]

I'm 24 and just started skating 2 years ago in Mexico.
It has been difficult at times, in my rink there is only me and another guy that is a senior skater.
So I guess you have to have a lot of patience; but when you master a skill, pass a test or do well in a competition it's worth it I guess.....

It Seems that late Adult Male skaters that want to take it seriously are a rarity everywhere

I started at 52. I did play hockey in college and have a rebuilt left knee because of the hockey.

Starting late means it just takes longer to learn. I have a pretty decent waltz jump and Salchow. I have been doing more figures lately since my jumping days are probably numbered.

So when I take the ice during a session, I usually have two distinctions, the only male and the oldest.

You need to go along to a few competitions, they're not that rare at all (insofar as male adult figure skaters in general can be described as "not rare"). Myself I am a 26 year old male skater, but I've been skating since I was 14 so I'm not part of the AOSS crowd.

WARNING WARNING. FEMALE IN THE THREAD!

There are several "adult onset" male skaters in our area. Not as many as the women, but then again, there aren't as many kid boys as there are girls.

At AN, there are enough men to make most levels a challenge.

We ladies love to have new men join our ranks. You'll be scoped for being a dance partner and a pairs partner. If you are interested in either one of those disciplines, you will have no problem finding a partner. If not, you will still have the support of all of us adult ladies who love to see men skate!

Hope you enjoy skating!

My mom will be 60 also in the spring- I see your birthday is a few days before hers. Too bad she'll probably never try to skate....

I started when I was 18, I guess I was at an advantage when compared to someone starting at 30 or so. But definitely at a disadvantage when compared to a skater learning to skate as a child...

There are two guys at my rink who are in their early 20s...both started skating in their 20s or late teens. One now has double jumps 8O, the other has all his singles sans axel with practically no formal lessons. Neither has ever tested. I'd like to say that they can only jump and not skate at all, but it's simply not true. So...if they decide to test and then compete...look out. I wish I had that kind of natural talent.

I occasionally teach Basic Skills, and three out of five of my Adult 2-3 students were male last session, and two of them were in their late 20s.

My husband is 28 and just started skating this past September in hockey skates. Got him figure skates for Christmas, and he's now learning his 2-foot spin from back crossovers, and has a toeloop, waltz, and half flip. I WILL convert him into an ice dancer, though...just you wait!

So...it's not so uncommon.

I dont think we have this in the UK, do you have to be Gay to enter?

I dont think we have this in the UK, do you have to be Gay to enter? No, you don't - they make a point of being inclusive. But Tim David's point is that at the Gay Games you can have same-sex couples doing pairs. You can in this country, too, Tim - it's called "Artistic Couples" and is a popular highlight of the Bracknell Adult Open, and some other competitions, too.

Going back to the original question, there are at least four men at our rink who didn't start to skate until they were in their 40s or even 50s. Most of our non-elite male skaters are in their 50s or older - I think the oldest is well into his 70s now, we have a couple in their 60s and several in their 50s.

You need to go along to a few competitions, they're not that rare at all (insofar as male adult figure skaters in general can be described as "not rare").This from the man who would like some competition at the British Adults..... ;) All the same, it's quite true, there are plenty of them around. The older ones are usually married and skate with their wives, though, if they do pairs or dance!

I suppose the Artistic couples could be a version I havent studied the rules lately but I cant say I persoanlly have seen anything like men doing pairs at Bracknell. I have seen two men doing lifts on the ice but only in a show and nothing quite as demanding as full pair lifts, I should think it would be awesome to watch two powerful male skaters together skating and doing lifts. Do you have any pictures David?

No you do not have to be gay to enter, I am perfectly straight and I just love the sport and want to compete in it. i started just now and wanna go solo in Figure skating and then go into the dancing...

Oh dear Kodlan I think you musunderstood the question, I was asking if the Gay Games was for Gay people only which by the title of the competition suggest so, in other words could you enter if you are not gay.

Samba, I reckon the Gay games are there for Gay people, which I think is great for them having a sport they can feel comfortable in competing in.

Some Life partners (male and Male or Female and Female) would love to skate together and compete together, so its a chance for them to enjoy it.

My son is a well accomplished figure skater/dancer/pair skater although he doesnt do it much anymore he can come back after 6 months away and still pop the doubles no problem.

What is your opinion of a male figure skater?Depends on which one! I know some who are really nice people - including the current British men's champion, who I know slightly through his girlfriend - and others, I gather, can be real pains! However, most of the ones I know are really nice.

Weve got 6 rinks in South Africa and the sport is getting quite popular here.

Great to hear that ladies like the idea of men figure skating. :D

Thanks! Let's see, I have a half flip-waltz jump-toe loop, back power 3 to salchow, waltz jump, toe loop, and salchow-toe loop-toe loop for jumps. My loop isn't competition ready yet. When I actually leave the ice it's pretty hideous. ;) Just a regular one foot and two foot spin, and some simple connecting steps. It's nothing too amazing or anything but it's been fun to have my own program anyway, and my goal for the competition is not to embarrass myself.

Our society has so gender stereotyped ice sports (much like anything, really), that people seem honestly surprised if a boy expresses interest in figure skating or a girl expresses interest in hockey. I started out playing hockey, but I have enough combative agressiveness in my life. I found figure skating to be much more me.

A perfect example of this is skate rentals at my rink. Although some crossover does exist, most figure skate rentals are by girls, and most hockey skate rentals are by guys, even if neither can actually skate! Frankly it, like most gender roles, is absolutely ridiculous.

Actually, this only appears to be true in North America - here in the UK many girls play ice-hockey, and many men do figure skating and ice dancing, and nobody makes any assumptions about their sexuality. And, come to think of it, although I do know some gay and lesbian figure skaters, I know far more straight ones on both sides of the Atlantic!

I believe that most people in South Africa also thinks that you are gay when you do Figure skating or dancing. But they probably have no idea what awesome sport it is!
